Caring for the Caregiver Presentation
Wed, Sept 6th at 2pm
Presented by Deeanna of First Light Home Care
"Self-Care is not selfish. You cannot serve from an
empty vessel." --Eleanor Brownn
Many people believe they have to care for their loved ones alone, ac-
cept the burden -- never ask for help and never think
about themselves. Unfortunately, that can be a recipe
for disaster. Let us pass on some information on how
important it is to balance the needs of the care receiv-
er with the needs of the caregiver. We will discuss signs of stress, po-
tential consequences of ignoring those signs and a 6-Dimensional Ap-
proach to Balancing the life of a Caregiver.
Grandparent’s Day at the Washington Park Zoo
Sun, Sept 10th Spend a day making memories that will last a
lifetime. The Zoo will offer free admission for all grandparents with a paid child admission.

Beach Seniors and they’re
laying down some tunes that will make your
feet tap and your heart soar! Please join us
on Wed, Sept 27th at 1:00pm-3:00pm as we
enjoy the music of our very own Beach Sen-
iors. They’ll play blues, country, folk, gospel,
contemporary, classics and so much more.
You’re going to love them. And it’s FREE to all

Hacksaw Ridge is the true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss (Andrew
Garfield), who won the Congressional Medal of Honor despite re-
fusing to bear arms during WWII on religious grounds. Doss was
drafted and ostracized by fellow soldiers for his pacifist
stance but went on to earn respect and adoration for his
bravery, selflessness and compassion after he risked his
life -- without firing a shot -- to save 75 men in the Battle of
Okinawa.

Director’s Corner
Where is everybody? That’s the question Enrico
Fermi (physicist) asked to a group of his colleagues
at lunch one day. And it’s how the Fermi Paradox
came about. The Fermi Paradox is a conflict between argu-
ments of scale and probability that seem to favor intelligent life
being common in the universe, and a total lack of evidence of
intelligent life having ever arisen anywhere other than on the
Earth. In other words, if it’s probable that there is intelligent
life “out there,” why haven’t we found a shred of concrete evi-
dence to prove it. I don’t have enough room in this column to
lay out some scientific hypotheses as to why this may be, but I
think I will start with this column and make it into a 2-3 part
series. I find it extremely interesting, and I hope you do too.
So let’s start with how the Fermi Paradox came about. There
are between 100-400 billion stars in our galaxy, and roughly the
same number of galaxies in the universe. To put that in per-
spective, for every grain of sand on earth there are 10,000 stars
in the universe. Wow. Now a conservative estimate states that
about 5% of all stars are sun-like (approx. size, age, etc.).
That’s 500 quintillion. Of those, the most conservative estimate
of those stars that have a planet in the “Goldilocks
Zone” (proper distance from their star, potential for water, etc.),
is 1% of all stars that have a habitable planet circling it. Which
amounts to 100 billion billion earth-like planets. Which means
there are 100 earth-like planets for every grain of sand on earth.
Again, wow. Now of those, let’s say 1% develop intelligent
life. The math works out to 100,000 intelligent planets in just
our galaxy alone. SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelli-
gence) is an organization that searches for signals from intelli-
gent life in the universe. If we’re right, and there are 100k in-
telligent civilizations in our galaxy and only a small fraction of
them are sending out signals trying to reach other intelligent
civilizations, wouldn’t we have picked up something in the last
50 years? Anything? But we haven’t. Ever. Not even a blip
of a signal. Which brings us back to our original question:
Where is everybody? We’ll explore the possibilities in the Oc-
tober issue. Til next time, Happy Labor Day!....Tara Miller
