THE HORIZON OF HOPE! > ‘The Journey is Never Finished’
College Board AGMLast week we held the College Board Annual General Meeting where there was a great level of attendance, an excellent meeting and we were fortunate to have two new members join the College Board for 2017. We warmly welcome Judy Bickmore and Fiona Couzner to their new roles!
Each of our new members spoke briefly about their background and reasons for joining the Board. The continued message from our Board members is that Gleeson College is such a positive experience for their children that they want to serve the school in this capacity. Each new Board member brings a wealth of experience, gifts and talents and we are very excited about their future contribution to the Board and thank them sincerely for agreeing to serve our community in this role. At the AGM we also recognised retiring members Mrs Valerie Altieri and Mrs Vera Ierace. Thank you sincerely to both Valerie and Vera for their service to the Gleeson College community.
I again take this opportunity to thank all parent volunteers that support our community here at Gleeson College, particularly our College Board, and we look excitedly to the future of our school under the guidance and stewardship of this group.
Year 12 GraduationOn Tuesday evening we said a final farewell to the Year 12 Class of 2016 with a wonderful event at the Adelaide
Entertainment Centre. It was truly a memorable conclusion to celebrate these students and families time at the College. I include an excerpt of my address to our Graduates below:
“My hope for each of you is that you cultivate all the skills and dreams that
you have and do all the other things, the ambitious things that life offers but as you do these wondrous things, to the extent that you can, always be guided
in the direction of kindness. Make sure that your impact on the world leads
you to do those things that incline you toward the big questions, and avoid the things that would reduce you and make you trivial. The most valuable things in life cannot be seen with the eye: faith, love, friendship, hope, integrity, trust, compassion. These are the things that bring substance, fulfilment, and lasting
joy to our lives. That luminous part that exists in your heart is, as the Fox in The Little Prince says, not visible to the eye; so it is up to you to shine as
brightly as anything that has ever been. May you shine as bright as Da Vinci, be as disciplined as the Dalai Lama, shine with compassion like Nelson Mandela, be as humble as Saint Teresa, and be
as inspirational and hope filled as Pope Francis.
Clear away everything that keeps you separate from this secret, shining,
luminous place. Believe that this place exists, come to know it better, nurture it and I am certain that the world will
be a better place because you are in it. Many people feel that nothing truly great can happen to them, that they can never
achieve great things. I am here today
to challenge this view and to say this is simply not true. It is my absolute belief that all of you were put on this earth to
achieve great things, you only need let go of your fears and find inspiration in the
things that others take for granted.”
Presentation EveningFinally, a reminder that the College Presentation Evening will be held next Wednesday 7 December at 7pm in the Dame Roma Mitchell Centre. This is a very important event for our community, and is a compulsory event for all Year 8-10 students. The evening will begin with a liturgy followed by the presentation of awards. It will be wonderful to see you all there to celebrate what has been another amazing year at Gleeson College.
Advent – Prepare the Way of the LordLast Sunday the Church began it new liturgical Year with the season of Advent. Like Lent, Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas, and for the time when Christ will come again. Advent also allows us the opportunity to more deeply reflect on our own lives.
As usual Pope Francis inspires us as we continue this journey when he writes:
“For the great human family it is necessary to renew always the common horizon toward which we are journeying. The horizon of hope! This is the horizon that makes a good journey. The journey
is never finished. Just as in each of our own lives, there is always a need to restart, to rise again, to recover a sense
of the goal of one’s own existence.”
As this is my last lead article for The Globe for 2016, can I take this opportunity to wish all our families a most happy and holy Christmas. My hope is that all the members of the Gleeson community can take the opportunity to relax, re-charge batteries and enjoy spending time together with family and friends. Enjoy a fantastic holiday and I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year to continue our exciting journey of faith and learning together and the limitless possibilities that it will bring.

OUR GRADUATING CLASS OF 2016 CELEBRATE IN STYLE!Tuesday 29 November saw the final celebration for the Gleeson College Class of 2016 hosted by the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. A delicious three-course meal, glamour and style summed up the aesthetics of the evening... but more importantly, the reflections by the College Executive, Parents Leanne and Darren Edmonds and Principal Andrew Baker reverberated strong connections between the Gleeson Community, students and families.
Thank you once again to the Graduating Class of 2016’s parents and families for your partnership and for entrusting us with your child’s education. I would also like to recognise the work of some key staff whom without their efforts, our Graduation event couldn’t have run as smoothly as it has; Kerri-Anne Freeth, Carol Hamilton, Rebecca Sinclair and Scott Hutton, the House Leadership Team and the College Leadership Team.
Thank you also to the staff who attended the Graduation to celebrate with our Year 12’s and their families. The formalities of the evening concluded with a wish for the Graduating Class of 2016, ‘May your journey through life always be ‘With One Heart’.

FLIPCON CONFERENCE 2016 > Strengthening Student-Teacher Relationships
Last week we had the great opportunity to attend the annual FlipCon Conference
held at Brighton Secondary School. The Keynote Speaker, Jon Bergmann, who pioneered the Flipped Classroom movement, outlined the many benefits
associated with adopting such an approach to teaching including better
student-teacher relationships, a deeper level of understanding, maximising
teacher time with students and overall improved learning outcomes.
The conference highlighted a contemporary way of approaching
learning, both inside and outside, of the classroom. In essence the theory
behind Flipped Learning is to promote higher order thinking skills within the classroom and a more collaborative
approach to work both amongst students themselves and individual student
time spent with the Class Teacher. The conference provided us with one-on-one time with Jon, where he supported us to create our first ‘flipped’ video during a
Boot Camp with him!
After such an inspiring conferencewe hope to implement such strategies
here at Gleeson, beginning with a small focus group of teachers keen to
‘Flip’, leading the way!

Congratulations to Year 12 Braden O’Shea (12 FSIMB) on his recent
selection to represent Australia at the Oceania Road Cycling Championships to
be held in Melbourne next week.
This will be Braden’s debut in National colours and we would like to wish him
all the very best on the track - our entire Gleeson College community is behind
you, cheering you on!
Following this event, Braden’s busy racing schedule continues as he
prepares to compete at the National Omnium Championships, also in
Melbourne, and the Austral Wheelrace and National Madison Championships
(Hisense Arena). At the Madison Championships he will race in the Open
Category for the first time, which will see him come up against Australia’s
top professional riders, which will be a great experience. Then his focus will be the 2017 National Track Championships
to be held at the new ‘Anna Meares Velodrome’ in Brisbane in March.
We highly commend Braden on his selection to represent Australia and
wish him every success as he continues his pursuit of a career at the elite level.
Well done Braden!

Chewing Gum at Gleeson College
A reminder to parents to please have a conversation with your child/ren regarding Gleeson College being a chewing gum free zone. There are WH&S concerns with chewing gum
at school and it also contributes to a significant litter concern when it is
not disposed of appropriately.
I thank you for your supportwith the matter.
