She took an amazing grab in the second quarter running backwards into oncoming traffic and taking the ball above her head. Ebony Roberts (11 DSHUT) was third best for her work on the ball. She threw herself into every contest and won a lot of contested ball around the ground. Imogen Brooksby (11 DSHUT) did a wonderful job at Centre Half Back frustrating her opponent by never giving her a clear opportunity to run at the ball. The team’s captain, Maddy Nenke, was fifth best for her courage and tackling pressure down back and standing tall when the team really needed her. Ella Summers was sixth best for her dash on the wing and poise when under pressure. Back Pocket Ella Taverner (10 MSGAG), Rover Abby Taverner (11 MSGAG), Abby Lowman (Full Forward) and Ruck Zoe Krieg (11 DSPOS) also played very well. In fact, each player made the most of the opportunities they were given and played their role for the team. The Grand Final will be played in Week 3 (Wednesday 7 August) at Flinders University Stadium (South Adelaide Football Club). Mr Simon Barratt & Mr Chad Schoenmakers, Open Girls KO AFL Coaches

The Open Girls Knockout AFL Team are into the ‘Big Dance’ after defeating Faith Lutheran College in Round 3 of the Statewide Competition yesterday.

The team travelled to Tanunda Sporting Club to face Faith Lutheran in our final minor round clash and there was a lot of buzz amongst the girls with the prospect of a Grand Final

appearance on the line for the winner.

The girls started superbly getting the first clearance and hitting the

scoreboard truly with a quick goal. Faith Lutheran hit back with a goal

of their own, however our rock solid defence and forward line pressure kept us in front going into the second half. At half time, the scores were Gleeson

3-2 (20) to Faith Lutheran 1-1 (7).

The main message going into the second half was to win the mental

battle. The girls had proven that they could match Faith Lutheran for skill, it was now going to come down to who

wanted it more.Faith Lutheran, with the aid of a breeze

WELCOME TO TERM 3

What a pleasure it is to be back here at Gleeson College following my term of study and long service leave. I want to begin by thanking Mr Joe Corbo and Mr Adam Cibich for their wonderful leadership in my absence. It certainly enabled me to focus more on my study comfortable in the knowledge that the community was in the safest of hands. Thank you to the Leadership Team and Staff for all of their work during Term 2. I remained in touch with the happenings of the College, and as usual I was in awe of the breadth and depth of learning experiences that were made available to our students. I am very much looking forward to re-connecting with the students, and I have certainly missed my daily interactions I have with them. I trust that all are looking forward to a positive and productive term ahead. It is great to see the daily progress of the building of our exciting Senior Learning Centre out my office window, and we will endeavour to keep you updated on this work as the weeks unfold. As always, it is a great time to be at Gleeson College!

Decision TimeOver the course of the next few weeks there will be a strong focus on decision making for our Senior School students in particular. Our Year 12’s will be making decisions on their post school options, and our Year 10 and 11 students will be choosing their subjects and learning pathways for 2020 and beyond. A Senior School student has many key

decisions to make around this time, and parents and caregivers play a crucial role in supporting and encouraging these decisions. One of the keys to success in secondary education, and indeed in life, is to make informed decisions about learning pathways. Students will do best studying subjects that are suited to their learning style and subjects that they are most interested in, and events such as the upcoming Subject Selection Evening are a key component of this process. We have a strategic commitment at Gleeson College of 100% SACE completion, and choosing the right learning pathway is a vital component of ensuring successful outcomes. I therefore ask all students and families to positively engage in this important process over the following weeks.

Quiz NightAs has been advertised in The Globe, on Saturday 24 August the Parents and Friends are holding our annual Gleeson College Quiz Night. It promises to be a great night filled with much laughter, and I am sure it will be a great night. Thank you in advance to the P&F for their organisation of this event, and more broadly for the fantastic work that they do for our community. If you have not yet organised your table please do so. Come along and support the wonderful efforts of our amazing P&F who work so hard to build community here at Gleeson College.

It’s really not OK to be awayDuring the recent holidays, the Leadership Team and I attended a three-day conference here in Adelaide that bought together Catholic school leaders from Australia and New Zealand.

This conference occurs every two years, and the focus is on the sharing of good practice that is occurring in schools. There were a number of sessions of interest, but one in particular that resonated strongly with me was related to the complex issue of school refusal and absenteeism. There are many studies that outline the significant detrimental impact that absenteeism has on student outcomes. It is very difficult to learn, to have continuity in learning, and to ultimately succeed if students are continually absent from school. At Gleeson College we work very hard on ensuring that we have pastoral support and structures in place, but these can only be effective if we can work with students who are attending school. The presentation I attended at the conference made it very clear that the prime responsibility for school attendance rests with parents and caregivers. As Term 3 progresses, I urge all families to commit to ensuring that, with the exception of unavoidable absence due to illness, Gleeson College students are here at school ready to learn and be supported through their faith and learning journey.

Andrew Baker,Principal

The thoughts, prayers and support of our Gleeson community are

with Max Gemmell (8 HMSHA) and his family on the recent passing

of his paternal Grandmother, and Tyson Ballentine (10 DSHUT) and his family on the recent passing

of his beloved Grandfather.

May they rest in peace and God comfort their family and friends

at this sad time.

With Sympathy

Rest In Peace

CAN YOU HELP?We are seeking prizes for our P&F Quiz Night and would be most grateful if families

could donate a small gift item (chocolates, bottle of wine)

towards this major fundraiser. Please drop donations to Gleeson Reception during

business hours. Thank you!

AUSTRALIAN ALL STAR SELECTION FOR YEAR 8 CRICKETER JAMIESON

Congratulations to talented Year 8 athlete Jamieson Payne (8 MMWIG) on his recent selection in the Cricket Australia Under 13 All Star Indoor Cricket Team

after outstanding performances at the 2019 National Junior Championship held in Victoria over the school holidays.

Jamieson and the SA Under 13 Team (Red) took bronze at the championships with six wins and just two losses, unfortunately going down to WA in the Semi Final. Jamieson had an exceptional competition with his personal contribution

stats seeing him finish equal first in the nation in his age division, and third overall counting all 425 juniors who competed Australia-wide from U13-U17s.

Well done Jamieson!

Gleeson Old Scholar and talented SA cricketer Zach Schwarz (Class of 2016), pictured left with Jamieson, helped coach this U13 SA side, and also took out top spot in the nation with the SA Under 21 team recently. Zach was also selected to represent Australia (for the second year running) in the U21 team to contest the

World Indoor Cricket Championships coming up!Well done Zach and all the best for the World Champs!

GLEESON DRUMMER TAHLIA ROCKS LANEWAY FESTIVAL 2019

OPEN BOYS KO FUTSAL TEAM EDGED IN PENALTIES IN STATE FINALOn Thursday 4 July (Term 2, Week 10) the Open Boys Knockout Futsal Team

contested the 2019 State Finals at Mars Stadium. The team entered the State Finals in good form after performing

well in the qualifying round tournament earlier in the term. The tournament

format split the finalists into two pools with the top two teams of each pool going forward to contest the semi-

finals and ultimately the grand-final if successful, with all games played on the

same day.

The team started the day strongly with a 6-4 group stage win over Glenunga International High School and a 7-2

win against Cardijn College. The third match against Underdale High School saw the two undefeated teams from the pool contest in order to see who

finished top of the pool. The game was an exciting and intense affair with the multiple goals and the lead changing several times before the final whistle,

seeing the teams locked at 5-5. In order to determine seeds from the

pool a penalty shootout was needed to separate the teams, which we lost 7-6 to qualify in second position from the pool.

The Semi Final saw us come up against Henley High School in what we knew would be a tough contest. The boys

were up for the fight and played some excellent free-flowing futsal to ease into the grand-final with a 5-3 win. The Grand Final saw us again face Underdale High School in a match

that showcased an array of talented players across the two schools, with many players representing Adelaide United Youth Teams, FFSA NTC or

playing Senior Club football with their respective clubs. The final would prove again to be a tight and tense affair but we managed to start the strongest and score early, but unfortunately conceded late in the half to go in 1-1 at halftime.

The boys came out strong after the break and added two quick goals to take the lead 3-1. Unfortunately

Underdale were able to peg back the lead with two late goals, which left the final score at 3-3. The game had to be decided using a penalty shootout but we weren’t able to find our luck from

the spot going down 4-3 on penalties. The team were very unlucky not to take more from the day, having not

lost a match throughout the day and only beaten from the penalty spot.

The team, consisting of Cooper Nunn (12 MSCOD), Ryan Mayo (12 MSSEL),

Morgan Evans (12 FSTUL), Lachlan Wallace (12 MSSEL), Thomas Ayre (12 FSTUL), Harrison Conant (11 MSCOD) and Rocco Carzo (12 HSPLL), played

tremendously all day and I could not be more proud of what this playing group has achieved. Having worked closely

with this team since they were in Year 9, where they won the Year 8&9 Knockout Futsal and Knockout Soccer State Titles

in 2016, and went so close as Open Boys Knockout Futsal State Runners Up in 2019. The boys played their futsal in the right way and were commended on

not only their playing ability, but also the way they represented themselves and the College. Thank you to World

Football Program Specialist Coach Daniel Mullen for his support in coaching the team on the day.

DESIGNING A YOUTH ACTION PLAN FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIA

An invitation to young people aged 12-24 to help shape a

new three-year Youth Action Plan for South Australia.

What is being decided? We are developing a Youth Action Plan for South Australia and invite young people aged 12-24 to tell us how we can work better together to achieve the best outcomes for young South Australians on the issues that most concern them. From previous reports, we have identified four key areas that are important to young people:

1. Learn and Earn 2. Connect and Grow 3. Wellbeing and the Environment 4. Fairness and Inclusion

We will use these four areas as a foundation for engaging with young people and stakeholders across the development of the Youth Action Plan.

How can your input influence the decision? We want to hear many different voices so that the Youth Action Plan is representative of South Australia’s diversity. We want to involve young people at all stages of development – designing, delivering and reviewing – to make sure we are targeting their needs and designing actions that will make a difference.

To achieve this, we will be forming a Youth Panel to help design a three-year Youth Action Plan for South Australia with other young people, representatives from government and representatives from key non-government organisations.

How can you get involved? We invite you to take part in the development of the Youth Plan:• Learn more about the Youth Panel

and then nominate to join before 9am on Monday 29 July 2019

• Complete the online survey and help us understand young people’s priorities

• Email your thoughts to: [email protected]

• Join the online discussion

How will your input be used? The input of young people at this stage will inform the design of the Youth Action Plan. At later stages, we’ll be checking in again with young people and the broader community on the draft Youth Action Plan.

What are the next steps?Learn more about what is planned for future stages and how you can get involved in them on the background page.

The Youth Action Plan is expected to be finalised by the end of 2019 and implemented from 2020.

Closing dates: • Youth Panel Nomination, 9.00am

on Monday 29 July 2019• All other feedback, 5.00pm on

Friday 2 August 2019
