It’s no secret, there is violence in our communities and a lot of it comes from individuals who get a gun from someone else illegally. But while some might argue the city needs tougher gun control measures, there is little that can be accomplished without stricter laws at the state and national level. While here in the city some people might want to have firmer gun laws, others downstate are defending their constitutional right to bear arms. That’s where the controversy begins.
Should the city have longer penalties for those who are caught with an illegal gun? Should Cook County have stronger laws to deter straw purchases?

The Gun Control DebateWhile Congress discusses national gun control measures, local officials are pushing for tougher gun laws in the state level, but not without some opposition
In the midst of a national gun debate, city and Cook County officials are rallying support for tougher gun laws.
Standing in front of a display of 10 seized firearms, Chicago Police Superintendant Garry McCarthy advocated for tougher gun laws in a press conference on April 15.
“The reality of firearms still confronts officers and our communities far too often, and we need stronger laws to keep illegal guns off our streets, and to punish the dangerous criminals carrying them,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy is not alone. While the city seeks tougher gun laws to reduce violence, others across the nation are asking Congress to pass legislation to avoid tragedies like the one in Newton, Conn.
But passing any legislation to make stricter gun laws will not be easy anywhere.
Earlier this month, Congress voted to start debating on new gun control measures that include expanded background checks, bans on assault rifles and high capacity magazine clips, and stronger laws to deter straw purchases.
While the centerpiece proposal on background checks gained broad public backing, the amendment failed to win enough support in the Senate during a vote on Wednesday, April 17.
Other proposals also failed to win enough support, including a bipartisan amendment to stiffen penalties for straw purchases and a Democratic plan to ban dozens of military-style weapons.
The Senate’s opponents of gun control said that they cast their votes based on logic and that passion had no place in the making of momentous policy, according to a report by the Washington Post.
President Barack Obama made a statement moments after the vote saying it was “a shameful day for Washington” but the effort is not over.
At the state level the debate is focused on the Illinois’ ban on concealed carry. In December, a panel of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the state’s ban on carrying a weapon in public is unconstitutional and gave lawmakers 180 days to put together a law that lifts the complete ban on carrying guns in public.
Yet with the deadline approaching, lawmakers haven’t been able to reach a consensus, as gun rights advocates want a law that is broad and permissive, while gun control advocates don’t want one at all.
Richard Pearson is the executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA), a local gun rights group. His organization has been advocating for the right to carry concealed guns, arguing that it is within their Second Amendment right to bear arms and helps potential crime victims defend themselves.
“The only person that could stop a crime is the intended victim, the police will never get there on time, no one can get there in time,” he said.
Anti-gun advocates don’t agree. Mark Walsh is the campaign director for the Illinois Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. He said more guns in a community don’t make individuals safer.
“It’s complete nonsense,” Walsh said, adding that any concealed carry law that passes has to contain common sense solutions to keep guns from entering the illegal market.
Expanding background checks to include gun show and Internet sales will also help decrease the number of firearms entering the black market, he
said.“People aren’t building illegal guns in their
garage, these guns are being bought legally and then entering an illegal market,” Walsh said. “Acquiring an additional background check is a way to keep those guns from entering the market.”
In Cook County, legislation to help reduce the number of guns entering the black market has already passed.
In February, the Cook County Board of Commissioners passed a law that requires gun owners to report the loss, theft or sale of a firearm within 48 hours or face fines of up to $2,000.
Seventh District Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, who introduced the bill, said the legislation will help decrease straw purchases—when people who have firearms identification cards buy guns and sell them for a profit to anyone willing to buy.
He said straw purchases are the main reason guns end up in the hands of city street gangs.
“When you throw guns into a situation where
there are people living in poverty, where people are unemployed, where you have struggling schools that have been disinvested in for a long time and then the existence of street gangs, it becomes a very volatile situation,” he said. “That’s where legislators owe it to people, to their constituents to figure out strategies for eliminating or reducing the easy access of guns.”
On April 1, a controversial $25 tax on gun sales in Cook County kicked in to deter straw purchases. It hasn’t gone over well with a group of local gun shop owners, however. They filed a lawsuit against the tax, saying it violates their right to bear arms.
Pearson, from the Illinois State Rifle Association, doesn’t agree with the tax either. He believes passing laws that restrict the buying of firearms is not the answer, instead he suggests extending the jail sentence of repeat gun crime offenders.
“If they are in jail they are not attacking people on the outside,” he said.
That’s what Mayor Rahm Emanuel and McCarthy are proposing for the city of Chicago—pushing to impose a mandatory minimum three-year sentence for all people caught carrying an illegal gun.
The proposal would increase the mandatory jail time for certain cases of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon from one year to three years. It also would bump the sentence for felons caught with guns from two years to three years, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The measure is currently in the Illinois General Assembly where it awaits a vote from the full House floor.
Pearson hopes the creation of any type of gun law isn’t too rushed.
“This is going to take a long time to work out, whenever a tragedy happens and you try to push a law ahead of time, sure enough, you’re going to end up with a very bad law,” he said. “The fact that this is taking some time is a good thing not a bad thing.”

En medio de un debate nacional sobre el control de armas de fuego, funcionarios de la ciudad y del Condado de Cook buscan el apoyo para unas leyes de control de armas más estrictas.
Parado frente a una muestra de 10 armas confiscadas, el Superintendente de la Policía de Chicago Garry McCarthy abogó por leyes de control de armas de fuego más estrictas durante una conferencia de prensa el 15 de abril.
“La realidad de las armas de fuego aún confronta a los oficiales y a nuestras comunidades con demasiada frecuencia, y necesitamos leyes más fuertes para mantener las armas ilegales fuera de nuestras calles, y para castigar a los criminales peligrosos que las portan”, dijo McCarthy.

Pero con el plazo que se acerca, los legisladores no han podido llegar a un consenso, ya que los defensores de los derechos de armas de fuego quieren una ley que sea amplia y permisiva,

En febrero, la Junta de Comisionados del Condado de Cook aprobó una ley que requiere que los propietarios de armas reporten la pérdida, robo o venta de un arma de fuego dentro de un periodo de 48 horas o enfrentarán multas de hasta $2,000.

Key Components of Immigration BillAfter 10 years, undocumented immigrants in Registered Provisional Immigrant (RPI) status may adjust to Lawful Permanent Resident Status through the same Merit Based System everyone else must use to earn a green card (described below) if the following things have occurred:
• The individual maintained continuous physical presence;• Has paid all taxes owed during the period that they are in status as an RPI;• Has worked in the United States regularly;• Has demonstrated knowledge of Civics and English• All people currently waiting for family and employment green cards as of the date of enactment have had their priority date become current.• A $1,000 penalty fee is rendered
Ineligible if:
• Convicted of an aggravated felony;• Convicted of a felony;• Convicted of 3 or more misdemeanors;• Convicted of an offense under foreign law;• Unlawfully Voted; and• Inadmissible for criminal, national security, public health, or other morality grounds.
People in DREAM Act Status and the Agricultural Program can get their green cards in 5 years and DREAM Act kids will be eligible for citizenship immediately after they get their green cards.

Bipartisan Group Introduces Immigration Reform BillProposal includes path to citizenship, increase in border security
The group of senators working on an immigration bill for months released the major components of the proposal on Monday, April 15.
The draft called: Outline of the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013, would offer a path to citizenship to the 11 million undocumented immigrants who came to the United States before December 31, 2011 and have a clean criminal record.
The legislation was not introduced publicly due of the recent bomb attack tragedy in Boston that killed three people and left hundreds injured. According to news sources, the senators continued with their plans to introduce their proposal in the Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.
The proposal is highly concentrated in increasing the border security and coming up with surveillance strategies in what’s called “High Risk Sectors” along the Southern border.
According to the draft, those who fulfill the entry requirement, have a clean criminal record and have stayed in the country continuously could apply as early as six months after the president signs the bill.
Those who are eligible will have to pay a fee of $500 or more depending on the overall cost of the application, except for students eligible for the DREAM Act. Once they apply, they could enter a waiting period that could last up to 10 years depending on the case.
The initiative would cover those who lived in the United States prior to December 31, 2011 and were deported for non-criminal charges. According to the 844 page immigration bill, they
could “apply to re-enter the United States if they are the spouse of, or parent of a child who is a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident; or are a childhood arrival who is eligible for the DREAM Act,” stated the draft.
Those who are eligible for the DREAM Act and the Agricultural Program would be able to get their
green cards in five years. Once they get their green card, DREAM Act-eligible youth could immediately apply for citizenship.
The proposal will also raise the cap for high skilled H1-B Visas from 65,000 to 110,000. The outline also offers a controversial W-Visa program for low skilled workers. Increasing the cap from 20,000 for the first year starting April 1, 2015 up to 75,000 by year 2018. Local labor and immigrant base organizations worry the W-visa program lacks worker protection strategies and focuses too much on
border security. The Latino Policy Forum sent out
a statement saying it “has ongoing concerns with several aspects of the proposed legislation, chiefly the return on a proposed $4.5 billion additional investment in our southern border.”
Other immigrant communities worry the new bill did not include the diversity visa program, which granted 55,000 visas to immigrants who came from countries that lack representation in the U.S.

Grupo Bipartidista Presenta Proyecto de Ley de Reforma MigratoriaPropuesta incluye un camino hacia la ciudadanía, aumento en seguridad fronteriza
El grupo de senadores que trabaja en una propuesta de ley migratoria dio a conocer los componentes más importantes de la propuesta el lunes, 15 de abril.
El borrador titulado: Esquema de la Ley de Seguridad Fronteriza, Oportunidad Económica, y Modernización Migratoria del 2013, ofrecería un camino hacia la ciudadanía a los 11 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados que llegaron a los Estados Unidos antes del 31 de diciembre del 2011 y que estén libres de antecedentes penales.
La legislatura no fue introducida públicamente debido a la reciente tragedia del ataque de bomba en Boston que mató a tres personas y dejó a cientos de lesionados. Según fuentes informativas, los senadores continuaron con sus planes de introducir su propuesta ante el Comité Judiciario el miércoles.
La propuesta está altamente concentrada en incrementar la seguridad fronteriza y en crear estrategias de vigilancia en lo que se llaman “Sectores de Alto Riesgo” a lo largo de la frontera sur.

Chicago Teachers Union Wants to Launch Voter Campaign to Oust Mayor, Stop School Closings
Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis is going after elected officials who want to close schools.
At a press conference on Monday, April 15 she said the union is planning to launch a citywide voter registration campaign to oust Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other elected officials who were part of the decisions involving the closing of 54 schools.
“We know that we may not win every seat we intend to target but with research, polling, money and people power we can win some of them,” Lewis said.
The decision came because the mayor, some members of the City Council and some members of the Illinois General Assembly have failed to listen to the voices of thousands of parents, educators, students, school employees and activists on school closings,
she said. “Board members have been trotted out
to parrot CPS talking points as if they have already voted on the matter,” Lewis said. “There is no democracy here. These hearings, most likely sham events, are designed to provide therapy to people impacted by their decisions.”
CPS continues to hold hearings on school closings but the mayor has been reported saying the negotiations are over. Fifty-four CPS schools are slated for closure. The Board of Education is expected to vote May 22.
Among CTU’s plans is a host of political education forums and trainings for mayor, City Council and statewide officers.
CPS was reached for comment but a statement was not given by the time of publication.

La Presidenta del Sindicato de Maestros de Chicago Karen Lewis quiere ir tras los funcionarios electos que quieren cerrar las escuelas.
En una conferencia de prensa el pasado lunes, 15 de abril dijo que el sindicato planea lanzar una campaña de registro electoral por la ciudad para destituir al Alcalde Rahm Emanuel y a otros funcionarios electos que fueron parte de las decisiones que involucran el cierre de 54 escuelas.
“Sabemos que no podemos ganar todos los puestos que pretendemos ganar pero con investigación, sondeo, dinero y el poder de la gente podemos ganar algunos de ellos”, dijo Lewis.
La decisión surgió porque el alcalde, algunos miembros del Concilio Municipal y algunos miembros de la Asamblea General de Illinois no escucharon las voces de miles de padres, educadores, estudiantes, empleados escolares
y activistas sobre los cierres escolares, dijo.“Los miembros de la junta han sacado a
relucir los mismos argumentos de CPS como si ya hubieran votado sobre el asunto”, dijo. “No hay democracia aquí. Estas audiencias, probablemente charlatanerías, están diseñadas para proporcionar terapia a las personas que fueron impactadas por sus decisiones.

Back of the Yards Ballet Folklorico Wins “Best of the Best” Title in International Competition
When the members of the Back of the Yards Ballet Folklorico decided to make the drive down to San Antonio, Texas to compete in the annual ACADEZ Folklórico Competition, they had no expectation to win the top prize.
“We were happy to just have the opportunity to participate,” said Salvador Cisneros, the director of the Back of the Yards Ballet Folklorico.
It was the first time the Ballet had competed in ACADEZ, a two-day competition that took place on April 12 and 13. Yet even without the expectation to win, the Ballet came out on top, beating out 38 other folkloric groups from around the United States and Mexico to win the “Best of the Best” title.
“It’s extremely difficult to win a contest of this level,” Cisneros said. “It’s logical that when one goes to compete, one has the hope and the
goal to win, but we knew it would be difficult.”
The Ballet performed a traditional dance from the Mexican state of Baja California known as Calabaceado. The dance depicts a head to head competition of two rival Calabaceado groups, each with their own distinct dancing style. It’s a dance typically seen in rodeos in Tijuana, according to Cisneros.
While Cisneros is elated with the win, he said the greatest prize is being able to promote the Mexican culture.
“One goes and all the groups go with the intention to promote the culture,” he said. “For us, the most important prize is maintaining the group united, working and encouraging kids to continue with the tradition.”
The win at ACADEZ adds to the five national competions the group has won in the past.

Cuando los miembros del Ballet Folklórico de Back of the Yards decidieron hacer el viaje hasta San Antonio, Texas para concursar en la Competencia Anual ACADEZ de Ballet Folklórico, no tenían la expectativa de ganar el premio más importante.
“Nosotros nos sentíamos contentos de tener la oportunidad de participar”, dijo Salvador Cisneros, director del Ballet Folklórico Back of the Yards.
Esta era la primera vez en que el ballet había concursado en ACADEZ, una competencia de dos días de duración que tuvo lugar el 12 y 13 de abril. Inclusive sin la expectativa de ganar, el ballet terminó en primer lugar venciendo a otros 38 grupos folklóricos de Estados Unidos y México para ganar el título de “Lo Mejor de Lo Mejor”.
“Es extremadamente difícil ganar un concurso de ese nivel. Lo lógico es que cuando uno va a un
concurso va con la ilusión y con la meta de ganar, pero sabíamos que era difícil”.
El ballet presentó un baile tradicional del estado mexicano de Baja California conocido como el Calabaceado. El baile representa una competencia cara a cara entre dos grupos rivales de Calabaceado, cada uno con su distinto estilo de baile. Es un baile típicamente visto en los rodeos de Tijuana, según Cisneros.
Aunque Cisneros está emocionado con la victoria, él dice que el mayor premio es poder promover la cultura mexicana.
“Uno va y todos los grupos van con la intención de promover la cultura. Para nosotros el premio más importante es conservar al grupo unido, trabajando, para que siga la tradición con los niños”.
La victoria de ACADEZ se suma a las cinco competencias nacionales que el grupo ha ganado en el pasado.

Pilsen Walks for PeaceA peace march on April 13 remembered victims of gang violence in Pilsen
Pilsen youth marched for peace in memory of those that have recently died to gang violence in their community.
Youth from Casa Juan Diego walked under the cold weather on the morning of April 13.
Six boys led the walk pushing a pink casket through the streets of Pilsen. The Peace Walk, made a brief stop at Benito Juarez Community Academy before returning to St Pius V Parish for a peace rally.
“I wanted to let people know what’s going on in Pilsen,” said Andres Villanueva, a sophomore at Benito Juarez Community Academy. He was friends with 14-year-old Michael Orozco who was fatally shot April 7.
Villanueva was part of a group of youth that organized the walk. About 80 youth walked together wearing shirts that read “Got Respect?” on the front. Families of the victims also joined them. Both held signs and pictures of their loved ones.
During the walk residents made four stops to remember D’Anthony Lopez, Helen Coronado, Jeff Maldonado and Officer Brian Strouse. All of them died in the last few years. Some locations were less than two blocks away from each other.
At each stop a white balloon was released while a friend or family member spoke in memory of the deceased and read poems. A blue balloon was released for Officer Strouse.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Superintendent Garry McCarthy made an announcement earlier this month that homicides fell sharply in the first quarter of the year 2013 compared
to last year. But at the march Concepcion Rodriguez said “killings keep on happening. They happened then and they happen now”.
Rodriguez is a resident and the funeral director at Funeraria del Angel Sagrado Corazon. She’s personally dealt with gang violence.
“ At 15, I was in a girl gang and I got out when my 15-year-old girlfriend was killed at 18th and Blue Island”, Rodriguez said. “At that point I knew I didn’t want to die and I turned my life around”.
Rodriguez came to live in Pilsen after moving from Texas with her family when she was still a child.
While gang violence has touched other parts of the city and claiming the life of an infant in one case, Pilsen didn’t have any reported homicides this year. Michael Orozco was the first homicide of the year in the neighborhood.
Liz Gonzalez, Youth Ministry Director at Casa Juan Diego, walked with the youth but made sure that they were given credit for their work.
“It was their idea and they had control over exactly what they wanted to do with the support of the adults in the community,” Gonzalez said.
After the walk, the youth and community members filled the rows at St Pius V Parish and brought the casket in front of the altar. Villanueva read a poem about his friend Orozco and dancers from the Benito Juarez Dance Crew performed one of their routines.
Seventh District Cook County Commissioner,
Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, spoke in favor of gun control legislation.
“If people are going to have guns, they need to be responsible for them” said Garcia. He also made reference to a memorial that he attended two weeks before the peace walk for a 6-year-old that was killed by gang violence.
Next to him was also Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle who spoke briefly
about how important it is for youth to stand against gang violence.
The rally ended with the youth walking up to the casket and looking into a mirror before hugging Rodriguez.
Garcia left the youth with a word of encouragement and hope for the future before leaving the podium, “You are charting a new path to peace.”

Los jóvenes de Pilsen marcharon por la paz en memoria de aquellos que recientemente han muerto a consecuencia de la violencia pandillera en su comunidad.
Jóvenes de Casa Juan Diego caminaron bajo el frío clima de la mañana del 13 de abril.
Seis jóvenes encabezaron la caminata empujando un ataúd rosa por las calles de Pilsen. La Marcha por la Paz hizo una breve parada en la Academia Comunitaria Benito Juárez antes de regresar a la Parroquia San Pio V para una manifestación de paz.
“Quería hacerle saber a la gente lo que ocurre en Pilsen”, dijo Andrés Villanueva, estudiante de segundo año de la Academia Comunitaria Benito Juárez. Él era amigo de Michael Orozco de 14 años de edad quien fue fatalmente baleado el 7 de abril.
Villanueva fue parte de un grupo de jóvenes que organizó la marcha. Aproximadamente 80 jóvenes caminaron juntos usando playeras que leían “¿Tienes Respeto?” al frente. Las familias de las víctimas también los acompañaron. Ambos sostenían pancartas y fotografías
de sus seres queridos.Durante la marcha, los residentes
hicieron cuatro paradas para recordar a D’Anthony López, Helen Colorado, Jeff Maldonado y al Oficial Brian Strouse. Todos murieron en los últimos años. Algunos sitios estaban a menos de dos cuadras de distancia del otro.
En cada parada, un globo blanco fue soltado mientras que un amigo o familiar hablaba en memoria del desaparecido y leía poemas. Un globo azul fue soltado por el Oficial Strouse.
El Alcalde Rahm Emanuel y el Superintendente Garry McCarthy hicieron un anuncio a principios de este mes de que los homicidios se habían reducido en el primer trimestre del año 2013 comparado al año pasado. Pero en la marcha Concepción Rodríguez dijo que “los asesinatos siguen ocurriendo. Ocurrieron entonces y ocurren ahora”.
Rodríguez es una residente y la directoria de la Funeraria del Ángel Sagrado Corazón,.Ella personalmente ha lidiado con la violencia pandillera.
“A los 15, estaba en una pandilla femenil y me salí cuando mi amiga de 15 años fue asesinada en la 18 y Blue Island”, dijo Rodríguez.“En ese momento supe que no quería morir y le di un giro a mi vida”.
Rodríguez llegó a vivir a Pilsen después de mudarse de Texas cuando aún era niña.
Aunque la violencia pandillera ha tocado a otras partes de la ciudad y cobrado la vida de un infante en un caso, Pilsen no tenía ningún homicidio reportado. Michael Orozco fue el primer homicidio del año en el vecindario.
Liz González, directora del ministerio juvenil en Casa Juan Diego, caminó con los jóvenes pero se aseguró de que se les diera crédito por su trabajo.
“Fue su idea y tuvieron el control de lo que exactamente querían hacer con el apoyo de los adultos de la comunidad”, dijo González.
Después de la marcha, los jóvenes y miembros de la comunidad llenaron las bancas de la Parroquia San Pio V y llevaron el ataúd al frente del altar. Villanueva leyó un poema sobre su amigo Orozco y
miembros del grupo de baile de Benito Juárez presentaron una de sus rutinas.
El Comisionado del Séptimo Distrito del Condado de Cook, Jesús “Chuy” García habló a favor de una legislación de control de armas de fuego.
“Si la gente va a tener armas, necesita responsabilizarse de ellas” dijo García. También hizo referencia a un servicio conmemorativo al que había asistido dos semanas antes de la marcha por la paz de un niño de 6 años que murió a consecuencia de la violencia pandillera.
Al lado de él también se encontraba la Presidenta del a Junta del Condado de Cook Toni Preckwinkle que habló brevemente acerca de lo importante que es que los jóvenes estén en contra de la violencia pandillera.
La manifestación terminó con los jóvenes acercándose al ataúd y mirándose en un espejo antes de abrazar a Rodríguez.
García dejó a los jóvenes con una palabra de aliento y esperanza para el futuro antes de dejar el podio, “Ustedes están trazando un nuevo camino hacia la paz”.

Residents Clean Up for Earth DayLittle Village residents are celebrating Earth Day
with a neighborhood-wide beautification event. For two hours on Saturday April 20, residents
will help beautify their neighborhood by cleaning their own street blocks and 13 other designated spots in Little Village.
The event is organized by Clean Streets/ Safe Streets, a collaborative of neighborhood organizations that seeks to make streets safer in Little Village by addressing the issues of vandalism and littering through neighborhood cleanups.
The cleanup is part of a larger initiative called Clean and Green, a citywide Earth Day celebration organized by the Department of Streets and Sanitation every year.
The one-day event is geared to provide residents with an opportunity to come together and pitch in to take care of their neighborhood, according to a city press release.
Cleanup groups, like Clean Streets/Safe Streets, will be working all around the city. Brooms, rakes,
shovels and bags will be provided to community groups who participate by the Department of Streets and Sanitation.

El evento es organizado por Clean Streets/Safe Streets, una colaborativa de organizaciones comunitarias que busca hacer las calles de La Villita más seguras al tratar los problemas del vandalismo y la basura tirada mediante la limpieza de los vecindarios.
La limpieza es parte de una mayor iniciativa llamada Limpio y Verde, una celebración del Día de la Tierra por toda la ciudad organizada por el Departamento de Calles y Sanidad cada año.
El evento de un día de duración se enfoca en brindar a los residentes una oportunidad de unirse y colaborar para cuidar sus vecindarios, según un comunicado de la ciudad.
Grupos de limpieza, como Clean Streets/Safe
Streets, estarán trabajando por toda la ciudad. Se ofrecerán palas, rastrillos, y bolsas a los grupos que participen cortesía del Departamento de Calles y Sanidad.

Seward Academy Students Win City Science Fair Awards
Two students from Seward Academy in Back of the Yards won top honors at the CPS City Science Fair this year.
Daniel Morales and Daniel Flores, advanced from the Pershing Network CPS Regional Science Fair to the CPS City Science Fair in January of 2013. The City Science Fair was held at the Museum of Science and Industry from March 22 – 24, 2013. Both students captivated the judges and received the following awards.
Daniel Morales, 7th grade, received the “Bronze Award”, a family zoo membership from the Brookfield Zoo, and $50 from the Lincoln Park Zoo for excellence in the Zoology category.
Daniel Flores, 8th grade, received the “Gold Award” and will be advancing to the Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Competition held at the University of Illinois – Champaign/Urbana from May 3-4, 2013. He was also honored at a Chicago Public Schools Board Meeting, the first week of April, where he was asked to present his findings during the “Honoring Excellence” portion of the meeting.
The purpose of Daniel Morales’ project,
“Which Type of Grease Attracts Ants?” was to find out what kind of grease attracts carpenter ants. He tested corn oil, olive oil, and canola oil. He predicted that if the size of the seed used to make the oil increased, then the attraction time would decrease. He hypothesized this because the oil from the larger seed would have a stronger scent which would attract the ant faster. Thus olive oil would have the fastest attraction time. His conclusion resulted in corn oil having the fastest attraction time. The size of the seed did not have any effect on the attraction time.
The purpose of Daniel Flores’ project, “Which Plant Yields the Greatest Pigment?”, was to determine the amount of pigment found in each type of leaf: lettuce, mustard greens, parsley, cilantro, turnip greens, radish leaves, spinach, and collard greens. He hypothesized that if the leaves have darker colors, then they will contain more pigment. He concluded that his hypothesis was incorrect. The plant with the most pigments did not have the most colors. Parsley leaves had the most pigments and radish leaves had the least.

Dos alumnos de la Academia Seward de Back of the Yards ganaron los mayores honores en la Feria de Ciencias de la ciudad de CPS este año.
Daniel Morales y Daniel Flores, avanzaron de la Feria Regional de CPS de la Red Pershing a la Feria de Ciencias de la Ciudad de CPS en enero del 2013. La Feria de Ciencias de la Ciudad se realizó en el Museo de Ciencias e Industria del 22 al 24 marzo del presente año. Ambos estudiantes cautivaron a los jueces y recibieron los siguientes reconocimientos.

Concluyó que su hipótesis estaba incorrecta. La planta con la mayor cantidad de pigmentos no tenía más color. Las hojas de perejil tuvieron la mayor cantidad de pigmentos y las hojas de rábanos tuvieron la menor cantidad.

Yollocalli Arts Reach Celebrates Move to Little Village with Art Exhibit
After 16 years of community involvement, the Yollocalli Arts Reach will close its doors in Pilsen to reopen in Little Village at the Boys and Girls Club. The center is hosting an event to celebrate and is inviting the community to participate.
The Little Village location is expected to be open to the community by June with the same level of programs as before. The new location will serve youth up to 24 years old.
Yollocalli Arts Reach has had a center in Pilsen since 1997 and since then it has been open to teens and young adults for community events and art workshops.
Vanessa A. Sanchez, the director of Yollocalli, came to the center as one of the students before she started working there herself.
“Even though we’re moving, we’ll still be here for the youth,” Sanchez said.
The center’s building in Pilsen was put up for sale two years ago forcing Yollocalli
to find a new place to operate. The Boys and Girls Club was looking for a partner at the time, so the two were able to work together to create a new space, according to Sanchez.
Yollocalli also has a center at Barrett Park where students can take classes to learn the history of graffiti and learn techniques.
The Spring Art Exhibit and Celebration will give the youth and community a chance to say goodbye to the center. Besides a bake sale, selling merchandise and having art and fashion on display, a wall will be open for participants to write what the center means to them.
Sanchez emphasized the important part of Yollocalli is the people involved and not the building itself. The most important thing to her over the years, she said, has been seeing the artwork and the students.

Después de 16 años de participación comunitaria, la organización Yollocalli Arts Reach cerrará sus puertas en Pilsen para volver a abrir en el Club de Niños y Niñas de La Villita. El centro está organizando un evento para celebrar y está invitando a la comunidad a participar.
Se espera que el local de La Villita esté abierto a la comunidad para junio con el mismo nivel de programas de antes. El nuevo lugar servirá a jóvenes de hasta 24 años de edad.
Yollocalli Arts Reach ha tenido un centro en Pilsen desde 1997 y desde entonces ha estado abierto a los adolescentes y jóvenes adultos para eventos comunitarios y talleres de arte.
Vanessa A. Sánchez la directora de Yollocalli, llegó al centro como una de las estudiantes antes de comenzar a trabajar allí.
“Aunque nos estemos mudando, aún vamos a estar ahí para los jóvenes”, dijo Sánchez.
El edificio del centro en Pilsen fue puesto en venta hace dos años obligando a Yollocalli a encontrar un nuevo lugar para
operar. El Club de Niños y Niñas estaba buscando a un socio en ese momento, así que los dos pudieron trabajar juntos para crear un nuevo espacio, según Sánchez.
Yollocalli también tiene un centro en el Parque Barrett donde los estudiantes pueden tomar clases para aprender la historia del grafiti y aprender técnicas.

I would imagine that it would be tough for a father to introduce his daughter to his new love interest, harder still if the lover is closer in age to his daughter than to his. That’s exactly what this Chilean film by director Álvaro Viguera explores, as Perez invites his estranged 22-year-old daughter to meet the love of his life, Marion.
The drama explores the role of relationships, both romantic and parental, as Perez struggles to keep his love life together due to his daughter’s volatile behavior towards the couple. It’s a film that makes you question ideal family structure, as a father struggles to mend the estranged relationship with his daughter while keeping his own love life afloat.

By now, we’re quite used to the typical bro movies that focus on a male’s attempt to sleep with as many women as possible--and as pretty as possible too. Yet this Brazilian comedy by director Felipe Joffily takes the bro approach a little differently. Centered around the question “did you score?” Joffily tells the tale of three friends, Fernando, Honorio and Fonsinho who meet every night at a local bar to discuss their womenly conquests and misfortunes.
All three face problems with love and try to tackle them, often unsuccessfully, quite hilariously. As the trailer states, it is a movie to see with your friends, your significant other, with just about anyone, as the topics hit home with both men and women.

Juvenile Justice Week to Inspire Action for Reform
Precious Blood Center along with the Peace and Justice of the Archdiocese of Chicago is promoting a week of awareness and prayer surrounding juvenile justice issues.
The Juvenile Justice Week of Faith and Healing (JJWFH), May 6 - 13, is designed to raise awareness about, and inspire action around meaningful juvenile justice reform. During the week, organizers hope congregations of all faith traditions unite across the country to educate and advocate for reform on behalf of children, families and communities impacted by “policies that funnel youth into dangerous and often underfunded prisons and jails.”
The goal of JJWFH, according to organizers, is to offer young offenders hope and alternatives to incarceration while society implements more fully the principles of restorative justice.

Semana de Justicia Juvenil Inspirará Acción para Reforma
El Centro de la Preciosa Sangre junto con la Oficina de Paz y Justicia de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago está promoviendo una semana de concientización y de oración en torno a los problemas de justicia juvenil.
La Semana de Justicia Juvenil de Fe y de Sanación (JJWFH) del 6 al 13 de mayo, está diseñada para crear conciencia e inspirar acción en torno a una reforma significativa de justicia juvenil. Durante la semana, los organizadores esperan que congregaciones de todas las tradiciones de fe se unan por todo el país para educar y para abogar por una reforma a nombre de los niños, familias y comunidades impactadas por “políticas que hunden a los jóvenes en peligrosas prisiones y cárceles y que a menudo cuentan con insuficientes fondos”.
La meta de la JJWFH, según los organizadores, es ofrecer a los jóvenes delincuentes esperanza y alternativas a la encarcelación mientras la sociedad implementa más a lleno los principios de la justicia restaurativa.

Little League Baseball Returns to Little Village
Little League Baseball has returned to Little Village.
Neighborhood organizations like Beyond the Ball, Enlace Chicago and New Life Centers of Chicagoland teamed up with the Chicago Park District to bring the Little League Baseball back to one of the neighborhood’s local parks.
The league will be under the umbrella of Neighborhood Sports Little Village along with other sponsors. Games will run from late April through June.

team.“The league will get the full baseball
treatment, official uniforms, trained umpires, and even trophies will be provided at the end of the season,” he said.
Teams will play two games per week, and all of them will take place at Piotrowski Park in the Little Village neighborhood. Participants will be placed in one of three leagues, an instructional league for 5-6 year olds. Along with a minor league for 7-9 year olds and a major league for 10-12 year olds.
DeMateo said that a few years ago, the former little laseball league in Little Village faced mismanagement issues that got in the way of the success of the program. This year he and other organizers want to make sure a better structure is implemented to ensure the success of the program.
DeMateo has been meeting with other Little League presidents citywide. He said he is pushing to offer an affordable price for parents to enroll their kids in the new league.
“Other league presidents thought I was crazy. I don’t want to charge our families $200 plus each for little league,” DeMateo said. “We will make it work and provide top quality baseball.”
Once the season has wrapped up in June a traveling All-Star team will be selected and will participate to compete in the official Little League Baseball World Series. The annual Little League Baseball World Series features teams from across the world and takes place over 11 days in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Organizaciones comunitarias como Beyond the Ball, Enlace Chicago y New Life Centers of Chicagoland se unieron con el Distrito de Parques de Chicago para traer de nuevo la Liga Infantil de Beisbol a uno de los parques locales del vecindario.
La liga estará bajo el paraguas de Neighborhood Sports Little Village junto con otros patrocinadores. Los partidos se realizarán de finales de abril hasta junio.
Matt DeMateo es el pastor de New Life y también entrena a uno de los equipos de la liga infantil.
“La liga va a recibir todo el tratamiento de los beisbolistas, uniformes oficiales, árbitros entrenados, e inclusive se darán trofeos al final de la temporada”, dijo.
Los equipos jugarán dos partidos
por semana, y todos se realizarán en el Parque Piotrowski del vecindario de La Villita. Los participantes serán puestos en una de tres ligas, una liga de instrucción para niños de 5 a 6 años. Además de una liga menor para niños de 7 a 9 años y una liga mayor para niños de 10 a 12 años.
DeMateo dijo que hace unos cuantos años, la antigua liga de beisbol infantil en La Villita enfrentó cuestiones de mal manejo que se interpusieron en el camino del éxito del programa. Este año él y otros organizadores quieren asegurarse de que una mejor estructura sea implementada para garantizar el éxito del programa.
DeMateo se ha estado reuniendo con otros presidentes de la liga infantil por toda la ciudad. Dijo que ha estado presionando por un precio más asequible para que los
padres de familia registren a sus hijos en la nueva liga.
“Otros presidentes de la liga pensaron que estaba loco. Yo no quiero cobrarles a nuestras familias $2oo o más por cada niño para la liga infantil”, dijo DeMateo. “Lo haremos funcionar y brindaremos beisbol de calidad superior”.
Una vez que la temporada haya terminado en junio un equipo de estrellas viajero será seleccionado y participará para competir en la Serie Mundial Oficial de la Liga de Beisbol Infantil. La Serie Mundial Anual de la Liga Infantil cuenta con equipo de todo el mundo y se realiza durante 11 días en South Willamsport, Pennyslvania.
