Good evening everybody and welcome to The Coppice. I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome the visiting officials, players and fans from Hereford for tonight’s Polymac Packaging League Cup Quarter Final.

Tonight, we once again get to lock horns with the league leaders and many people's favourite for the title, in what could be a very important week for Peter Beadle and his Hereford side.

I'm pretty sure the majority of Bulls fans will be having one eye on Saturday's FA Vase Semi-Final First Leg v Salisbury City.

It's a mouth watering tie, a game that I'm sure would have been an ideal final for the 2 big giants who find themselves at this level.

In saying that though, I know Hereford are going to be wanting to win tonight just as much and we fully expect a real tough battle.

They will be desparate to get one over on us, just as much as we want to make our own little bit of history and record what would be a famous 'treble' over The Bulls.

To stand any chance of that though we have got to be on our game right from the start.

Saturday's heavy defeat at Khalsa was a wake-up call, it was very disappointing to say the least, although not surprising. The mad weather we had has resulted in a bit of a fixture pile-up for quite a few clubs.

The home draw v Coventry Sphinx could have easily gone either way in a tight game that was ruined by some odd decisions for both sides. The following game away at Rocester we managed to scrape a side together who did a great job in hindsight as they managed to grab us another draw.

I'm not making excuses, it's the same for all of us in the MFL.Injuries together with work commitments are always going to play a part at this

level and our squad has been stretched to the limit these last few games, where if I'm honest we've managed to claw a draw here and there.

Hopefully tonight we can find our form again and progress through to the Semi-Final of the Polymac Packaging League Cup.

Speaking of semi-finals, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish Peter and all associated with Hereford the very best of luck in the FA Vase semi this Saturday.

Whatever the score tonight, I hope you'll join us in the clubhouse after the match for a pint and a chat.

Enjoy the game, wishing you all a safe onward journey.

All the best

25th February 2017 will mark the 50th anniversary of the tragic game v Enfield where our centre back Tony Allden was struck by lightning and sadly passed away the following day.To mark the occasion Highgate United are hoping to get all former teammates of Tony’s back together.

Plans and discussions with 3rd parties are already taking place as The Gate plan to have a number of events to commemorate the life of Tony Allden.

As soon as we receive confirmation of any of the plans we'll make them public on our website and twitter @HighgateUnited

ROLL OF HONOUR

Highgate United FC were formed in 1948 by a group of orphans from the Father Hudsons’ St Vincents Home for Working Boys on Moseley Road, Birmingham who met up again following wartime service. After progressing from junior football played at Billesley Common in the South Birmingham league, Highgate joined the Worcestershire Combination in 1964.

Promoted to Division One at the first attempt, the club went on to remain in the league’s top division for over 40 seasons.

In 1967 Highgate hit national headlines, unfortunately though due to a tragic, tragic incident here at The Coppice.

In front of over 3500 fans here at The Coppice, The Gate were playing Enfield in the quarter finals of the FA Amateur Cup, when midway through the first half, a lightning strike saw several players collapse. Sadly one player, Highgates’ centre half Tony Allden, did not recover and tragically died the following day in Solihull hospital.

As a gesture of goodwill and sympathy, Aston Villa agreed to host the replay of the game

and game drew an incredible attendance of over 31,000 as the football public of Birmingham and Solihull stood together in tribute to Tony and to show support for his wife of six months and now heartbroken widow Susan.

One of the most successful periods in Highgate’s history was the mid- 70s.

The club won the league championship (by now known as the Midland Combination for three consecutive seasons between 1972 and 1975 and also experienced its best runs in the FA Cup, FA Amateur Cup and FA Trophy within this period.

Success was hard to come by in the following years, until eventually following a 25 year planning battle, in 1997 the club finally received planning permission and floodlights were turned on at the clubs Tythe Barn Lane ground.

More success finally came Gates’ way in 2007, when they became the first team from the Birmingham and Solihull area to win the Coventry Evening Telegraph Cup.

The following season the club were promoted to the Midland Football Alliance after finishing as Runners-Up in the Midland Combination Premier League.

Despite a promising first season in the MFA, the Gate were then involved in annual relegation battles in the pursuing seasons.

That was until 2013/14 when Highgate finished a commendable 3rd in the MFA, their highest ever position - but they soon received a massive knockout blow when they were somewhat controversially relegated by the FA due to new ground regulations and found themselves in the newly formed Midland Football League Division One.

The 2014/15 season proved to be The Gates most successful for over 40 years as they went on to do the double being crowned Division One Champions at the first attempt, and winning the Smedley Crooke Memorial Cup defeating Redditch Borough 5-1.

Highgate suffered their heaviest defeat of the season at the end of a poor contest lacking in any real quality away at Khalsa on Saturday.

Highgate suffered their heaviest defeat of the season at the end of a poor contest lacking in any real quality, Sporting Khalsa ending comfortable winners after going in at the break sharing four goals, a calamitous second half seeing Gate concede a further three times without reply.

Such a defeat at the end of their worst performance of the campaign so far had perhaps been on the cards for a while Gate paying the penalty for a lack of depth to what has become a much depleted squad, further changes to the line up of no help to boss for the day Lee Adams as they faced an in form team sitting third in the league table.

Club officials recently met with Becky Doyle, founder of the local charity ‘Liam’s Smiles’ as we team-up for next years Tony Allden 50th Anniversary Memorial Events, whilst also helping to help raise funds and, just as important to Becky, awareness of meningitis.

Becky – Liam’s Story On July 15th 2010 our lives were changed forever. Our son Liam Doyle contracted Bacterial Meningitis, and in the wee hours of that terrible morning in intensive care a junior doctor gave me the telephone number for Meningitis Now. Since leaving the hospital some four years on we have continued to be supported by this wonderful charity. In May of last year Liam was again treated for pneumococcal septicaemia then immediately after contracted strep b. Meningitis Now have been providing support and guidance not just for Liam but for the whole of our family. Many of you who know us appreciate that Liam spends too much time in hospital and that each time Liam goes down, we fight as a family to get Liam better, but no one fights more than Liam.

We often know when things are going to get better, not by what the doctors tell us, but when we start to see Liam’s smile come back - firstly in his eyes and then slowly in his mouth, and that’s is when we know that this fight has been won this time around. As a family we remain on our guard and we are always aware there could be a next time, this is why we would like you who have followed Liam’s journey to come and support us raise money for a wonderful, supportive and sympathetic charity that has given us so much strength.

While Liam keeps Smiling we must keep fighting.

Meningitis, Signs and Symptoms in Babies and toddlersBabies and young children under five years of age are most at risk of developing bacterial meningitis.

A baby or young child with meningitis may:

• have a high fever, with cold hands and feet

• vomit and refuse to feed

• feel agitated and not want to be picked up

• become drowsy, floppy and unresponsive

• grunt or breathe rapidly

• have an unusual high-pitched or moaning cry

• have pale, blotchy skin, and a red rash that doesn’t fade when a glass is rolled over it

• have a tense, bulging soft spot on their head (fontanelle)

• have a stiff neck and dislike bright lights

• have convulsions or seizures

The above symptoms can appear in any order, and some may not appear at all.

The rash can be harder to see on dark skin, in which case check for spots on paler areas like the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, on the tummy, inside the eyelids and on the roof of the mouth.

However, don’t wait for a rash to develop. If your child is unwell and getting worse, seek medical help immediately.

Putting the ‘miles’ into Liam’s SmilesBecky together with Brummie fundraiser Tim Andrews MD of Hollywood Monster and Blues manager Gary Rowett are running The Virgin London Marathon 2016 to raise funds for ‘Liam’s Smiles’ and Meningitis Now. The new Hereford Football Club, founded by supporters after their beloved, historic Hereford United crumpled into liquidation last year, was reborn with a pre-season friendly against FC United of Manchester, attended by a remarkable, emotional crowd of 4,000.“There is absolutely huge goodwill and excitement that the club is being run by supporters and local people who care for it,” said Martin Watson, the vice-chair of the Hereford United Supporters Trust, now installed as the part-time secretary of the club while still running his computer repair business. “We have dozens of fans who have volunteered to do work on the ground and other jobs, and this one pre-season friendly has drawn a crowd about as big as the total attendances for every game last season.”

In the terminal, desperately unhappy season for Hereford United, after 90 distinguished years forever highlighted by the famous 1972 FA Cup third-round giant-killing of Newcastle United and Ronnie Radford’s 30-yard screamer, most fans reached the point of boycotting the club completely.

It had fallen into financial difficulties under a locally born owner, David Keyte, amassing debts of £1.2m and failing to pay its own players and former manager, Martin Foyle, who initially issued the winding-up petition. In May 2014 Keyte passed the club for £2 to an east London property developer, Tommy Agombar, whom fans discovered to be not “fit and proper” having been convicted of lorry theft and spent time in prison.

During a fractious and occasionally deeply unpleasant period the club was passed

to a company, Alpha Finance, specialising in “distressed debt,” and the most public director became Andrew Lonsdale, a partner of Agombar’s with a patchy record himself. Bankrupt in 2007, disqualified in 2006 from acting as a company director for six years, convicted in 2008 of illegal waste dumping, Lonsdale as the owner of Feltham FC had moved the club out of its arena then dumped five times more than the permitted quantity of soil and rubble on it, and it fell derelict.

Although Lonsdale and his partners insisted they wanted to revive Hereford, supporters who had dug up all that baggage opposed them absolutely, foresaw that their club might collapse and that the future lay in a fresh start. After repeated adjournments of the winding-up petition, in December Hereford United’s time ran out when Lonsdale failed to produce a required £1m proof of funding, complaining he was stuck in traffic on the way to court.

HUST, which had already prepared plans to form their own club, greeted the liquidation with a promise to rebuild, which they have eagerly fulfilled. The Edgar Street ground, site of Radford’s goal and the landmark scenes of delirious boys in parkas swarming on to the pitch,

is owned by Herefordshire county council, which repossessed it after the club was liquidated. In February, two months after the liquidation, the council agreed a lease with the new club, thereby fulfilling its own promise to ensure Edgar Street would remain a home for football. The fans, living their dream of owning and running their club after the years of indignity, found the ground itself a rackety distance from being a field of dreams. Decay, disrepair, dodgy electrics and asbestos meant around £200,000 was needed to restore it to safety and decency, so the trust did a deal with four local people, described as “benefactors”, who funded the works.

Watson says the trust willingly

agreed to this dilution of

the original plan for

complete

supporter ownership and that, although the benefactors want to remain unnamed publicly,

he is confident they are long-term

supporters who have financially

assisted in the past. For their £200,000 the benefactors are currently majority owners. The trust has put in £25,000 so far, with fundraising amassing the best part of a further £25,000, and the supporters

hope ultimately to raise £200,000 and own an equal 50% stake.

“We are comfortable with this because of the people the benefactors are,” Watson says. “To have them in a more formalised role is actually comforting. We haven’t run a club before and they have bucket loads of experience we can call on.”

The board will have three elected trust representatives on it, alongside four appointments by the benefactors, under the chairman, Jon Hale.

The match with supporter-owned FC United of Manchester, now of Conference North, was arranged after Hereford’s head of volunteering, Ken Kinnersley, inquired how FCUM organise their famed battalions of volunteers. Peter Beadle, Hereford’s newly appointed manager, used the FC United game and a friendly against Malvern to assess more local triallists to add to only seven signings at that point.

A crowd of over 2000 turned up at Malvern Town on 7th July to witness the newly formed

Hereford FC’s first pre-season friendly, Sam Pearson scoring Hereford’s first ever goal after 14 minutes in an entertaining 3-2 win for The Bulls.

“The support has been amazing,” Beadle said. “It

shows how passionate people are here and how important football is to people in Hereford. Our job is to aim to be successful but to run the club properly, sustainably, so they never again end up in the position they were last year – and ensure there will always be a Hereford football club.”

HOME&AWAYJOSH HAWKERJosh arrived at The Gate following the demise of Hereford United and played a key part in our success last season.

The former Birmingham City midfielder also had spells with Leamington and Rushall Olympic before signing for The Bulls in 2014.

Unfortunately for us, Josh headed down under after receiving a great offer to go and play for Adelaide in the Australian Football League.

Review 03.03.16Premier DivisionAlvechurch closed the gap at the top to just two points with two games in hand, as they won 2-0 at Long Eaton United. Two goals in two minutes midway through the second half from Jordan Nadat and Connor Deards gave Church all the points. In the battle of the top 4, Shepshed Dynamo took the spoils as they beat Heanor Town 3-2 at Butthole Lane. Michael Reeve scored twice for Dynamo to take his season tally to 13. 5th placed Sporting Khalsa had to come from behind at Loughborough University to gain a point, Chad Birch, with the all-important goal on his debut. At the bottom, Continental Star looked to be heading for an all important win but goals from Rob Ritchie-Smith and a Tom Land effort, four minutes from time, gave Rocester all the points. Dunkirk suffered a narrow defeat in the battle to stay up with a Craig Gregg goal being enough for AFC Wulfrunians to take the three points. Coventry Sphinx twice held the lead at high-flying Highgate United but ultimately had to settle for a point in a 2-2 draw. Despite improved results in recent weeks, Quorn are still in danger and their situation was not improved when they lost 2-1 at home to Lye Town. Aiden Thomas scored twice as Westfields moved 14 points ahead of the relegation zone with a 4-1 win over Boldmere St Michaels. Stourport Swifts move up to 12th thanks to a Joe Phillips goal as they beat Brocton 1-0 at Walshes Meadow.

Sporting Khalsa climbed to 4th on Monday evening with a 3-0 win at relegation-threatened Coventry Sphinx. Craig Bannister scored twice making it 35 for the season. A missed penalty 5 minutes from time meant Alvechurch missed the chance to go top after being held to a goalless draw by Quorn. Two goals in the first 11 minutes saw Rocester and Highgate United battle out a 1-1 draw at Hillsfield. Stourport Swifts move up to 11th place after a 3-0 win over Continental Star. All of the goals came in the second half with Jack Bailey scoring twice. Shepshed Dynamo climbed to 3rd following a 4-0 win at Long Eaton United. Four different scorers for Dynamo who are now 10 points behind with a game in hand.

Division 1Coventry United extended their lead at the top to 5 points with a comprehensive 4-0 win at Southam United. Nuneaton Griff are 10 points behind in 3rd place as they beat Heath Hayes 2-0 at The Pingles Stadium. Luke Shorthouse was again on target for Griff reaching the 30 goal mark for the season. A Tom McGlinchey double was enough for Leicester Road as they won 2-1 at Pelsall Villa. Tyron Smith scored twice for 5th place Lichfield City in a 5-1 defeat of Studley at The McDonalds Community Stadium. Bolehall Swifts remain bottom as they were beaten by a Craig Oldfield penalty at Pilkington XXX. Stafford Town are one place above the relegation zone as they let a lead slip at Littleton eventually going down 2-1. 12 points out of the last 5 games has lifted Pershore Town to 11th, their latest victory a 2-0 win at Coventry Copsewood courtesy of a Gareth Evans double. Hinckley AFC have moved up to 7th following a 2-0 victory over Cadbury Athletic at St Johns Park. Atherstone Town rose 2 places in the league table with a 2-1 win over Heather St Johns, Alan Miller with the winner.

Bromsgrove Sporting closed the gap at the top to two points with a 2-0 win at fellow promotion contenders Lichfield City. Nuneaton Griff remain in the hunt although they had to withstand a fightback from hosts Cadbury Athletic to secure all 3 points. Griff raced into a 3-0 lead before The Chocolatemen scored twice to make it a nervy finish.
