Introduction and key dates

New year's resolutions seem an age away as we finish the

term in unprecedented and strange circumstances. The Lent

term is always the most packed due to its short length

and busy nature. Although some events were cancelled this

newsletter will capture all of the wonderful memories

that we did create. There was house football, house

squash, a capella preparations, CHAPS, house hockey, house

swimming and lots of fixtures in the first half of term.

During the course of the term there have been many examples of outstanding academic achievement and

effort that deserve our collective recognition. Marcus Skyrme has consistently received praise from his

teachers and leads the overall table. Daniel Morris should be congratulated for receiving the highest average

GCSE mock grades from within Craig. In the Y13 mocks Joseph Shouk smith achieved 3A*s, 1A and Joshua Moreton

who received an offer from Cambridge in January achieved 3As.

THE SPORTS REPORT

Hockey.

Five Cronkites regularly represented the College 1st XI this season. Lucas and

Hugo Askaroff spear-headed the ferocious attack, rotating well with Joshua

Veitch. Oliver Carter dominated the midfield while Nico Chu gave some much

needed support from defence. The team have won 12 consecutive matches and

are in both final days for two national cups – should they be played. The second

picture down on the right shows the successful senior house hockey squad that

beat Reeves 2-0 in the final game to win house hockey. Goals from Joshua Veitch

and Hugo Askaroff clinched the win but they wouldn’t have done it without

the heroics from first time goalkeeper, Ethan Hackett. Cronkites, Ethan

Hackett, Freddie Collard, Will Chambers and Zak Hebron have also regularly

represented the 2nd XI who have also had a successful season. In the U15As

Joshua Ansell, Oliver Shouksmith and Hector Summers have contributed to five

wins from seven, while Matteo Chu and Ben Chambers got to the semi-final of

the Sussex cup with the U14As, just missing out on flicks having been ahead with

20 seconds remaining.

Football.

We had representation in some high scoring football matches for the 1st X1. Will

Harris scored some important goals from his striker position. Joseph Shouksmith

and captain Lewis Buckle provided some much needed defence for the team. The

senior house football team got caught cold by Powell in the first game, and after

taking the lead with a wonderful Jani Flind free kick, could only pull one back

through a penalty from Rory Boulter, eventually losing 4-2. The team continued

the day unbeaten to finish second in the tournament with the highlight being an

Archie McGonigal goal vs Reeves and the celebrations to follow. The Y9

house football team - pictured in the stands below – went undefeated on the

astro to claim the Y9 house football title.

Swimming.

Teddy Groves represented the College at the Bath Cup where there was

some success in the relay teams. Both the junior and senior house swim teams

finished 2nd in their categories which means they finished joint first overall with

Wargrave. Teddy Groves picked up two personal bests and Marcus Skyrme one.

There was a really good house spirit demonstrated by the pool with boys of all

ages encouraging each other.

Squash.

House squash saw Theo and Dan (together they are Theo and Dan) battle out

against some very strong Y13 players and finished a respectable 4th in

house squash. Oliver Shouksmith and George Auer finished 2nd in the juniors.

Overall Craig finished 2nd in the Inter house sports cup for the Lent Term.

Triple colours:Oliver Carter has now been awarded colours in cricket, hockey and

rugby. It is a rare achievement to be selected for the three 1st teams

let alone receive colours – well done him.

two keen swimmers in the relay.

The RAF section have also achieved some

great outcomes this term:

Ethan Hackett was invited to attend

the South East Area NCO training to act asdirecting staff at the course, helping toprepare younger cadets for leadership.

Good luck to Cameron Wallace-Carville who is applying for the RAF nationalleadership course at RAF Cranwell thissummer

Members of the Lower Sixth have been

involved in a wide variety of service activities

during the Lent term, both at the College and

in the local community. This has included

helping the elderly, the disabled, children in

primary and secondary schools and in charity

shops.

Special thanks this term go to Joshua Moreton who has been involved in setting up the Winter Night

Shelter in All Saints Church Hall, where homeless people have been able to spend the night in

warmth and safety during the coldest months of the year.

Will Stewart-Blacker has been involved with the Gardening Group have been working on projects to

embellish the gardens at The Chaseley Trust. Arthur Lewis and Declan Skyrme have been

volunteering their time with the residents at Chaseley Trust and Scott Williams has been at St

Wilfred’s Hospice.

Jake Ellwood had been helping at the afternoon homework club sessions for pupils from other local

secondary schools are providing valuable support for GCSE exams in all subjects.

Josh Veitch and Leon wood have been running Wednesday Club which remains an extremely popular

afternoon out for local elderly people, and where they have led quizzes and bingo sessions and

serve afternoon tea.

THE SERVICES REPORT The CCF Army section have been conducting a Method of Instruction Cadre as part of their potential

NCO programme. Eighteen Y11 cadets have now successfully passed the course. All pupils are to be

commended on their effort and achievement.

The following Y11 pupils successfully completed the cadre course and will be promoted in due

course: Will Chambers, Freddie Collard, Freddie Dunkley, Teddy Groves and Fin Tomlinson.

The boys pictured worked

hard every Tuesday

for a capella. I am

so pleased they

were able to show

their efforts off in

CHAPS with the

competition

postponed. They

tested themselves

with a mash up of

two George Ezra’s

songs.

Ben Clark passed his piano grade 5 exam at the end of term and Oliver Shouksmith achieved a

distinction in his trombone grade 7. If only the Y10s hadn’t interrupted him at CHAPS with their

kazoos.

Sebastian Isepp wowed the audience in young musician of the year final in which he came 2nd. Oliver

Shouksmith also performed in a different class on the trombone. Fin Tomlinson got to the final of the

vocal competition but unfortunately that was postponed. Several Cronkites attend weekly music

lessons in the Birley Centre and most of you saw the talent on show in the house band.

The first social event of the

term was the Y11 ‘James

Bond’ themed dinner and as

you can see from the photo –

lots of effort was put in! After

two weeks of gruelling mocks

it was a nice change to let

off some steam. The tables

were mixed so they were

socialising with peers from

other houses.

Pictured left: Fin played the

keyboard and sung to entertain the

rest of the year group as Bryn looks

THE SOCIAL REPORT

Page 10: THE FUTURE’S BRIGHT, THE FUTURE’S ORANGE ISSUE 5 March ... · the future’s bright, the future’s orange issue 5 march 2020 the lent term flew by and this newsletter looks to

“I Love you Robin” The Y9s kicked off an

excellent CHAPS with award winning

Robin Hood. Jamie Gordon brought the

humour with his brilliant wig and voice .

CHAPS IS BACK!!

On the left we have the Y10 having taken over from

Oliver on the trombone. The lights came on at

exactly the right time for the audience to enjoy

their renditions of Rocky, Match of the Day and

Tequila with comperes Lewis and Alex bringing the

comedy in the background.

Bottom left we can see Rufus and Ben singing

‘Dancing on My Own’ with Herbie dancing on his

own. They worked hard, with Joseph, to create

this piece and by chance Herbie was creating this

dance for a showcase and Rufus was singing this

song in his music lessons, so we just had to add

Joseph and Ben in to make it perfect.

Bottom right we see the most unique act at a

house concert with a selection of the sixth formers

all completing a Rubik’s Cube in under two and a

half minutes. They didn’t manage it in rehearsals.

Page 11: THE FUTURE’S BRIGHT, THE FUTURE’S ORANGE ISSUE 5 March ... · the future’s bright, the future’s orange issue 5 march 2020 the lent term flew by and this newsletter looks to

House band on the left with their ‘I’m all shook

up’ performance. Thanks go to Mr Norris for

getting the band back together. It has grown in

numbers and with only two Y13s it looks set to be

a big one next year too. The band was joined late

by the backing singers Scott and Fin who joined in

by accident at one of the rehearsals – house spirit

at its best!

Above: The Y12s provided the audience with so me

light entertainment with their take on Mastermind.

Leon and Jimbo provided the pre sketch comedy

with a wig and no chair respectively. Thanks go to

Jimbo who created the script and drove it forward.

Below: For the fourth year in a row Arthur and

Ethan performed a duet with Arthur singing ‘House

of the rising son’ and then Ethan – for the first time

ever – sung a wonderful rendition ‘Hallelujah’. Above: Alex and Lewis did a fantastic job as

comperes for the evening. I think my favourite

joke was the ‘subtraction’ song and the

chocolate bar routine was like nothing I have

seen before. They were confident, calm and

charismatic. Well done to them.

Page 12: THE FUTURE’S BRIGHT, THE FUTURE’S ORANGE ISSUE 5 March ... · the future’s bright, the future’s orange issue 5 march 2020 the lent term flew by and this newsletter looks to

CHAPS says goodbye to all of Y13 and in particular

Joseph Shouksmith this year. He took part in the

most acts he has ever done. The solo of I’m

feeling good, playing the piano for Herbie, Ben

and Rufus, playing the piano for ‘In Christ Alone’,

winning the Rubik’s cube challenge, videoing Love

Island, and leading the a capella group. He also

produced the programme at a moment’s notice. It

is clear that CHAPS will miss him but we look

forward to welcoming Joseph back next year when

he will finally be able to watch all of the acts.

A goodbye for now

Sta y safe, work hard, be creative, make memories and

cherish this difficult time together. Cronkites will be

back together on the other side.
