Following major renovation works, the large wooden sculpture creat- ed in 1967 by Mario Ceroli returns to the airport’s Terminal 3. A re-in- terpretation of the Renaissance principle of man as the measure of all things, the Vitruvian Man has been travelling far and wide since the 1980s, with temporary displays in the United States, Switzerland and many other countries. The highly evocative art piece took its in- spiration from the world-famous sketch in which Leonardo da Vinci gives a visual representation of the idea of proportion expressed by Marcus Vitruvius Pollio in his treatise “De Architectura”. Ceroli’s three-dimensional version of the work, whose name “Squilibrio” (Imbal- ance) expresses the contrast between the harmonious proportions of the Vitruvian Man and the reality of every human being dealing with his own contradictions, has always been a reference point for passen- gers transiting through the airport. On the occasion of its return home, Aero- porti di Roma has launched a community project aimed at transforming Fiumici- no into a stage for world-class events to be held in co-operation with some of the city’s most prominent institutions, such as the Rome Opera House (Teatro dell’Opera), the National Academy of St Cecilia (Accademia Nazionale di Santa Ce- cilia), the Parco della Musica multi-func- tional music complex and the Auditorium della Conciliazione. A special gift to those travelling for pleas- ure or work, a number of “airport pianos” have been permanently installed by Aero- porti di Roma in order to present passen- gers with exclusive concerts and preview performances. The restoration project of the Vitruvian Man, welcomed with great enthusiasm by Mario Ceroli, led to a com- plete renewal of the sculpture. For such operation, the artist drew inspiration from the ExoMars 2016 space mission: the orig- inal black marble basement was replaced with a hexagonal pedestal filled with var- ious-shaped “glass pieces”, while a new lighting system has been introduced to give the statue renewed sparkle and unprece- dented charm. THE DOME ILLUSIONThe Baroque church of St. Ignatius was supposed to have a monumental dome, but when the money ran out in 1647 the plans were scrapped. Instead of foregoing the dome entirely, painter and Jesuit brother Andrea Pozzo proposed that he paint a life-sized illusion of a dome that would fool the eyes of visitors, as long as they looked up from the proper angle.

THE AVENTINE KEYHOLEA sweeping view of Rome is perfectly contained in the keyhole of a nondescript-looking door on the Aventine Hill, neatly placing the dome of St. Peter’s right in the center. The city’s semi-secret peephole vista lines up perfectly with the garden, centered on the Vatican in the distance. No one seems to be able to say with certainty whether this was a beautifully planned peepshow, or just a lucky coincidence.

THE FANTASY DISTRICTTucked behind the main streets of Quartiere Trieste between piazza Buenos Aires and via Tagliamento, Coppedè is one of the city’s most unexpected and elaborate districts. A jumble of historic styles such as Art Nouveau, Medieval, Ancient Greek and Roman Baroque all whipped together in a dramatic frenzy, it owes its name to the Florentine architect who had it commissioned in the Early 1900s.

JAZZ LESSONSFor the sixth year in a row, two exclusive master classes illustrate the great adventures of the popular Afro-American sound. Among the upcoming events are a special class on Louis Armstrong and a dialogue-interview with Franco D’Andrea. On January 14 and 21.auditorium.com

PIAZZA DELLA REPUBBLICAFormerly known as Piazza Esedra, this se-mi-circular square owes its name to the large exedra of the neighbouring Baths of Diocletian. The porticos around the piaz-za, built in 1887–98 by Gaetano Koch, were in memory of the ancient buildings on the same sites. The adjacent Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Mar-tyrs was built by Michelangelo using the warm bathroom of the Roman baths as a wing for its spacious Greek cross plan.

Until mid-February Palazzo Barbe-rini plays host to a comprehensive exhibition of playful, avant-garde works by Italian Renaissance painter Arcimboldo (1526-1593). Famous for his imaginative portrait heads made entirely of objects such as fruits, vege-tables, flowers, fish and books, the artist is universally known as a 16th-century Mannerist. The show, curated by Sylvia Ferino-Pagden, includes approximately 100 works of 16th century Lombard culture: 20 of these pieces are by the

Milanese painter himself, while rest are products of his contemporaries. The show’s itinerary commences with a tri-bute to the Milanese environment whe-re Arcimboldo grew up, with a second section focusing on the period the artist spent as a portrait painter in the Hab-sburg courts of Vienna and Prague, as witnessed by works such as the portrait of the “Archduchess Anna” along with Arcimboldo’s famous personification of the four “Seasons” in dialogue with the four “Elements” (which has not been exhibited for at least 20 years). After a detour through a section on naturalistic study, the next chapter is Arcimboldo’s so-called “reversible heads”, still life images that become human faces when rotated 180 degrees. Coupled with the following sections on composite busts and portraits, these two collections in succession demonstrate the painter’s ability to not only show nature and hu-

man beings at the same time, but also to illustrate how closely related they are. From a distance, the composite heads seem to be normal human portraits. Yet a closer view reveals individual objects, carefully selected to characterize the subject, forming various anatomical shapes of a human bust. These last

works are often referred to as Arcimbol-do’s “ridiculous paintings,” of which the Palazzo’s exhibition holds masterpieces such as “The Librarian” and “The Jurist”. Ongoing until February 11.
