FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 12, 2019
ALL THINGS CONSIDERED HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY! On behalf of all the staff that serves you here at St. Mary Magdalen, I want to
wish all our mothers and grandmothers a very happy mothers’ day! It is my sincere hope the love and respect you are shown today will last far beyond this day. The seminary taught me how to be priest, but the lessons I learned from my mom (and dad) continue to form my life as a pastor. The example of my mom’s selfless dedication still provides a real witness to me of what it means to pastor a flock. Please know that I pray for you every day. May God bless you in your very special vocation. May your ministry of mothering continue to flourish as your children grow in age and grace!
CONGRATULATIONS!! This Saturday we celebrate the First Communion of several of our youth. It is a
very special step in the lives of these children as they receive the gift of the Holy Eucharist for the first time. It is also the second step in their initiation into the Body of Christ, the Church, which began at their Baptism. To all of our young people and their families, I offer our sincere congratulations! To all of their catechists who helped prepare them, I offer our sincere thanks! And for all of us, I offer thanks for the wonder God is accomplishing in their lives!
MINISTRY FAIR Next weekend is the last opportunity to sign up for one of our ministry teams: Spiritual
Development, Charity & Justice, Marriage Ministry, Youth Group & EDGE Ministries, Community Life, Faith Formation, Wellness and Worship. All these teams provide leadership to the various ministries within the parish and seek to involve others in their ministry. Those who sign up for a ministry team make a one-year commitment. Anyone who wants to continue on a Team needs to sign up each year. We are also looking for folks to sign up for the Pastoral and Time & Talent Councils. The Pastoral Council works with the pastor to provide leadership and direction to all the pastoral ministries of the parish. They help the pastor to formulate policies and programs to guide the parish as we continue to grow. The Time & Talent Council works with the pastor to encourage people to become active members of our community. They oversee three ministry fairs and contact new parishioners who have expressed an interest in serving within our parish. Members of the Councils serve a 3-year term.
Fr. Dave Howell
Please remember in your prayers:
Nancy Nychypor and family in the
death of her brother,
Matthew Chrzaszcz.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Acts of the Apostles 14:21-27 The book of Acts shows how the Easter message spread to all parts of the Mediterranean world. Today we hear a travelogue of part of one of Paul’s missionary journeys that took him to modern-day Turkey. The mountainous terrain there made travel difficult and dangerous, and the situation was even worse because of the constant threat of robbers, flash floods and wild animals.
Revelation 21:1-5 Many people think the book of Revelation gives secret information about future events, including the end of the world. But it was really intended to be a source of hope for Christians suffer-ing persecution toward the end of the first century. The author vividly describes visions of how God would ultimately overcome all evil and bring all creation to its destiny.
John 13:31-35 Here we return to the scene of the Last Supper. John has added the words of a Christian hymn and altered them to fit the circumstances of the meal. The mutual glorification of God and the Son now has two perspectives: the Son of Man is glorified in his obedience to God and God is glorified in the fulfillment of the divine will. Then God glorifies the Son by raising Jesus from the dead, the Son’s victory over death gives glory to God the father.
Reflect: How do you know that you are living what you believe?

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 12, 2019
YOUTH NEWS Margaret Callaghan
First Eucharist Congratulations to the parents of the children receiving First Eucharist this Saturday, and “Welcome to the Table of the Lord” boys and girls. Treasure this beautiful time in your family’s faith journey. Journey with Jesus JWJ It is so exciting that we will be hosting JWJ again this year. Although we did not get the number of adult volunteers needed to continue the size of our program of years past, we have many new adults to thank for coming forward to provide a faith and fun-filled week for the children of the St. Mary Magdalen family.
We will begin registrations for our Journey with Jesus Vacation Bible School on May 20. All registrations will be done online; there will be a link on
our website for registration of participants and youth helpers. We will e-mail the link to past participants. The number of youth helpers will be limited this year based upon the number of adult volunteers. We still need several adult chaperones; this role is not a lead role but adults that are just present with the children to create a safe environment. If you are able to volunteer, please contact me.
May is for Mary The Church dedicates the Month of May to the Blessed Virgin Mary. What will you do to honor Mary, Mother of God?
RELIGIOUS FORMATION NEWS Roxanne Hundsrucker
Next Sunday, May 19, the youth
will be hosting a Car Wash in the
parking lot, while the Knights of Columbus serve breakfast in the Community Room. After you’ve eaten and had
your car washed, then it’s off on a family-friendly photo scavenger hunt (sign up in the Gathering Area) put on by the Community Life committee.
Graduating class of 2019, be
sure you get signed up to be a part of our 9 am Graduation Liturgy in your honor on Sunday, June 2. A parish-wide reception will follow in the community room. Wear your cap and gown!
Happy Mother’s Day to every woman who
loves a child! The role of a mother has many faces and today we celebrate all the mothers, grandmothers, aunts, foster and adoptive parents, neighbors, step-moms and even dads who find themselves playing the role of both parents. For you, I wish you the happiest of days spent surrounded by those you love! May God bless your day and gatherings with memory making moments and abundant laughter!
To honor our mothers and family, there is no Youth Group meeting tonight. See you next week, both in the morning for the YG car wash and then later at 7pm for YG. YEAH!!
EDGE Our middle school Youth Group ended last month on a fun, positive note. Despite summer coming up and the free time that allows for them, each of them expressed a desire to see each other over the summer. The group grew in friendship with one another and in relationship with God. We had fun together each time we gathered and everyone felt welcome. I will look to plan a small outing sometime before the summer is over.

CHARITY & JUSTICE
On the Rise Bakery is here at St Mary Magdalen this week-end. Proceeds from the sales benefit the program run by the
Capuchins that allows men to learn a trade and im-prove their lives.
Water Quality Discussion Anyone interested in learning more about water quality and PFAS chemicals (polyfluoroalkyl substances) in your drinking water is invited to attend a discussion
after each mass the weekend of May 18 and 19.
PFAS substances are used in a wide variety of products such as Teflon, Gore-Tex and Scotchgard products, fast-food wrappers and microwave popcorn bags. These chemicals have a long life in the environment and some studies suggest a link between PFAS and health effects. It is likely that everyone in the county has some PFAS in their blood. Our Governor has recently commissioned a study to establish maximum acceptable levels in drinking water.
Please consider stopping by the Community Room for a discussion and an opportunity to ask questions.
Magdalen’s Kitchen Sign-Up Names of those interested in serving at Magdalen’s Kitchen and Panera Bread Pick-up for the 2nd half of May and all of June are being accepted. Sign-up sheets are organized by date and are on the Charity & Justice table in the Gathering Space.
