On Christian Perfection Rev. Seok Nam Lim

Wesley’s understanding of Christian faith is made explicit in his doctrine of

Christian perfection. He develops this doctrine not on the basis of reasoning

or experience but of Scripture. He argues that every Christian, whether they

are infants or grown-ups, cannot live under the dominion of sinful power any

longer but only in the realm of God’s grace; in Christ they are found to be

“dead unto sin and alive unto God,” being freed from slavery to sin and

becoming “the servants of righteousness.” 1

However, Wesley realizes that there is no Christian who is free of

temptation: Even Christ himself was tempted at the point of his dying on the

cross. Christian perfection is neither the cognitive nor moral perfection.

Every Christian is liable of falling into “ignorance or mistake, or infirmities

or temptations.”2

His understanding of Christian perfection is related to “the things essential to

salvation,” as to which Christians do not mistake. In other words, it is about

the holiness of life, according to which there is no sense of absolute

perfection but of growth in consistency and toward a deeper and higher level

of “the knowledge and love of God” the Savior.3

Therefore, there are several degrees of Christian perfection ranged from

infancy to maturity and constantly growing “up to the measure of the stature

of the fullness of Christ,”4 and, in each level of growing, even in the level of

infancy, there is a sense of Christian perfection, which originates from God’s

saving grace in Christ, through whom God calls us into a new life.5

In this regard, Wesley understands the doctrine of Christian perfection in the

Christological point of view. According to him the history of God’s salvation

arrives at its climax with the coming of Christ, through his death and

resurrection, and the purpose of the redemption in Christ is to let us walk in

holiness, not according to our sinful nature. On the basis of his scriptural

understanding, Wesley argues that Christ the Son of God destroyed “the

works of the devil,” so that “a Christian is so far perfect as to not commit

sin.”6

Every Christian sometimes fails to obey God’s will and his words. However,

that does not mean that they are designed to commit sins. God’s design for

them is not to stay in sin but to strive for holiness. In this sense, everyone

who is born of God does not commit sin but proves themselves belonging to

God by living a life of holiness even though they sometimes experience

failure to keep themselves in holiness due to their human or sinful nature.7

Christians, because of their belongingness to God’s kingdom fully

manifested in Christ, are demanded to live in holiness and glory exceeding

the Law and the Prophets.8

Perfection,” p. 84.

12 An Introductory Comment,

“Christian Perfection,” p. 69.

13 An Introductory Comment,

“Christian Perfection,” p. 69

The salvation made by Christ is “not only from outward sins, but also from

the sins of their hearts; from evil thoughts and from evil tempters.”9 Christ is

the master of all Christians “not only at or after death but in this world,” so

that his salvation is to be applied to the present world as well as in the world

to come.10

Justification leads to sanctification. Living a life of holiness against evil

thoughts and tempters is a proof of being made righteous in Christ.

Therefore, Wesley encourages every Christian still suffering from the bondage of

corruption to cry out to God for their salvation and “to glorious liberty of the sons

of God” and to “press toward….the prize of the high calling of God in Christ

Jesus.”11 However, he does not support self-righteousness and spiritual elitism but

confirms that no salvation is possible except by faith alone and assurance of God’s

salvation.12

Further, Wesley’s theology of salvation is purposed to make “the total restoration of

the deformed image of God in us,” in which the vision of Christian experience is

opened not only to personal life but also to social transformation. This aspect is one

of the beauties of Wesley’s understanding of God’s salvation, which is progressed

from personal conversion to social transformation. His principle of the

Reformation, “Scripture alone, grace alone, and faith alone,” is led to the social and

cultural engagement. His ministry is related not only to the small group cell

movement and the action against alcoholism but also the abolition of slavery and

the education of the children in the slums alienated from the school system. His

doctrine of Christian perfection is radically extensive to the whole area of human

life, which is personal, cultural and social.13 There is no question that we need a

restoration of the Wesleyan view of Christian perfection for our contemporary

world.

Celebrating Lexys

The Lamp family has posted an invitation on Facebook to celebrate what would have been Lexys Lamp’s 7th birthday on August 27th. She loved birthday parties and had already planned her next birthday with a Minnie Mouse-themed party before she died last November. Her family and friends will honor her loving and strong spirit by gathering at her home, 1536 May St., Dearborn 48124 at 1:30 P.M. A balloon

release is scheduled for 3:30 P.M. sharp. In lieu of presents, the family suggests that $7-donations be sent to them to be donated to Children’s Hospital of Michigan for D.I.P.G. Research. This little girl touched so many lives. Let’s support her legacy by helping to find a cure for D.I.P.G. For additional information see the TeamLexysLamp Facebook page. The family urges those interested in attending to respond via FB or email. Crystal Lamp’s contact information is in your directory.

Help Restock Your Food Pantry!

Please remember that, even though it’s called a food pantry, we also provide toiletries to our guests! Staples like toilet paper, laundry and dish soap, shampoo, diapers, toothpaste, and more are always in high demand. This month, instead of bringing food, please consider donating some of these items.

Thanks for all you do!

August Mission of the Month

School Supplies for DuVall Elementary

September is fast approaching, and parents, teachers, and students are gearing up to learn. There are many components to learning such as a compassionate and engaging teacher, a safe learning environment, and necessary school supplies. Unfortunately, some local students don’t have the basics. Fractions are hard enough to master even with a pencil and ample paper. Students without school supplies are at a disadvantage.

August’s mission of the month is to alleviate this disadvantage by providing school supplies. Good Shepherd will be collecting school supplies for DuVall Elementary – a school just 3 blocks away from the church doors to aid both teachers and students.

DuVall’s students will require an assortment of supplies, including:

Pocket folders Glue sticks Crayons

Pencils (mechanical and wood) Backpacks Dry erase markers Blunt-tip scissors Erasers Washable markers Wide-ruled notebooks Colored pencils Rulers Highlighters 1” binders

Flash drives (low memory) Disinfectant wipes Boxes of Kleenex Hand sanitizer

To donate, please place supplies in the collection bins located in Good Shepherd’s lobby.

God bless you and your support of our local students!

COVENANT is an in-depth group Bible study in which participants read and discuss the Bible together, learning how to love God and each other better. The second segment has ended, and we will be taking a break from study during the summer.

Our Lay Leader, Jean Mackey, will lead the next 8-episode segment which begins on September 8th. Please plan to be part of the next 8-week session of this engaging, in-depth Bible study. All are welcome, regardless of attendance at the previous segments. Books are available for $10. Sign up in the Opportunity Center.

Walking and Biking With God

Anyone who would like an early morning time spent with God is welcome to join us! We walk Tuesday and Thursday at the track behind O.L. Smith middle school in Dearborn at 6:30am and again on Saturday morning at 7:00. With the weather turning for the better sometimes we will venture out on Saturday to different locations (Hines Dr., the nature trail behind Andiamo's, etc.) Saturday mornings we meet up at Panera Cares for breakfast and conversation. Please consider joining us – it is a great way to start your day! Any questions, please feel free to contact Kathy Lewis.

Healthy Dearborn

In the first quarter of 2016, Georgia Grovesteen and

Carla Schneider, representing Good Shepherd

United Methodist Church, attended the first

community meeting of Healthy Dearborn, a

project born out of a mandatory Community Health

Needs Assessment (CHNA) guided by Oakwood

Healthcare System. Below is a brief recap of

purpose & progress to date.

Four distinct community health needs were

discovered during the CHNA process: access to

care, obesity, cardiovascular (CVD) and diabetes.

In acknowledgment of these needs, the Healthy

Dearborn initiative was created to address viable

solutions.

Healthy Dearborn is a community united to

promote a healthier tomorrow!

Our Vision: Dearborn, a thriving, diverse

community, will fully embrace a unified culture of

health where everyone enjoys whole health (mind,

body, spirit), with equal access to healthy foods,

health care, green space and opportunities for safe,

active living.

Our Mission: We will create valuable opportunities

for people in Dearborn to practice healthy lifestyles

by enriching their minds, nurturing their bodies and

revitalizing their spirit.

United under Healthy Dearborn is a cross section

of the community including leaders and

representatives from business, city, churches,

neighborhoods, researchers and schools. Goals and

objectives are part of the strategic planning and help

translate the mission and vision into reality. Five

Action Teams have been created: Healthy

Transportation, Healthy at Play; Healthy Foods;

Healthy Schools; Healthy Worksites. These action

teams meet monthly to develop and execute

specific, measurable objectives for each strategic

goal.

Every citizen is welcome and invited to participate

in creating a sustainable Healthy Dearborn.

If you’re interested, contact Carla Schneider.
