THE FOLD Monthly Newsletter of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church July 2016 Introducing Seok Nam and Soon-Shil Lim New beginnings are happening at United Methodist Churches all over Michigan as pastoral transitions officially commenced July 1 st . This year we are one of those churches with the appointment of Pastor Seok Nam Lim, who comes to us from the Lansing Korean United Methodist Church. Pastor Lim’s wife of 28 years and partner in ministry is Soon-Shil, and they have a son, Stephen, who lives in the Grand Rapids area and is currently on leave from Calvin College. The Lims are natives of Seoul, Korea. As a 28 year- old, Pastor Lim came to the United States in 1988, one month after his marriage to Soon-Shil. She remained with her family until she was able to join him in 1990. Music plays a strong part in Pastor Lim’s life. (Some of you have seen the photos he’s shared on Facebook of the extensive record collection that lines the walls of his study at the parsonage.) His father studied at the Seoul Music School before the Korean War, and two of his three younger sisters have pursued music studies in America. His family, including his parents, live in this country. Soon-Shil comes from a family with a strong Christian tradition. Her grandfather was educated by an American missionary in Korea, and her great-grandfather was a pastor in the early Korean Presbyterian church. She studied Korean language and literature at college, earned her teacher’s license for those subjects, and taught in high school for a time. We learned of Pastor Lim’s varied educational background when his appointment was first announced. He has studied at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, the New School for Social Research in New York, Union Presbyterian Seminary in Virginia, and the Columbia Theological Seminary in Georgia. His chaplaincy internship and residency in two hospitals taught him to listen and communicate with others in an empathetic way. His own words capture the richness of this work: “… the chaplaincy program has provided me with one of the most powerful and precious experiences in my ministerial life.” His time living in New York and his ministerial experiences related to both first and second generation Korean immigrants and to multi-ethnic groups, has shaped how he envisions the church. He says, “My vision of the church is to see all kinds of people living together in grace, peace and justice as the community of God’s kingdom.”

Introducing Seok Nam and Soon-Shil Lim

New beginnings are happening at United Methodist Churches all over Michigan as pastoral transitions officially commenced July 1st. As a 28 year-old, Pastor Lim came to the United States in 1988, one

month after his marriage to Soon-Shil.

United Methodist Men Dinner meeting 1st Monday

each month at 6 pm - Leon’s on Michigan Ave.

For relaxation, Soon-Shil likes watching Korean dramas while Seok prefers films. He thinks of himself as a cinephile, and lists more than 1,300 films on his Facebook page. The pastor also enjoys reading, and with Soon-Shil’s background in Korean literature perhaps they can recommend books and films that might expand our knowledge of their native country. Prior to his ministry at Lansing Korean UMC, the Lims both worked at Booking.com in Grand Rapids providing bilingual service for the company and customers. Before he came to the United States, Seok Nam Lim worked for Korean Christian publishers as a translator and has several translations to his credit. Written and spoken words appear to have great significance for our new pastoral family. Finally, Pastor Lim speaks eloquently of what it means to live in this country, and how he views his appointment to Good Shepherd: “For me English is a foreign language and I am making the utmost effort to upgrade my English in speaking and writing. I am still learning about American culture. Perhaps my wife and I are permanent aliens to America even though we are American citizens and our fidelity is toward this country. However, we appreciate what America has done for us. Our American dream has come true through education and ministry. We like to see the prosperity of this country. “Our ministry with Dearborn Good Shepherd UMC will be a continuation of our learning experience, through which we will grow up. Dearborn Good Shepherd UMC reminds me of my second home church, the First Presbyterian Church of Newtown, Queens, New York, which provided me friendship, hospitality and generosity, so that I might be able to be accommodated to American culture and language and to pursue my American dream. We pray for our growth through the ministry in Dearborn Good Shepherd UMC and also that our growth will make contribution to the church growth. We feel very thankful to participate in the history and progress of Dearborn Good Shepherd UMC.” We are thankful for your appointment, and look forward to the blessings your leadership will bring to our church on the corner of Mason and Monroe. Amen.

Worship Design Team

The Design Team kindly requests your ideas for our altar in the sanctuary along with the décor for our lobby! Please give us feedback (pro & con) on recent designs. Thank you! Also, consider a plant or flower arrangement for our altar as a special honor for a loved one on any Sunday. Lastly, save extra coupons for Bed Bath & Beyond as we can use them to purchase items to enhance our church atmosphere. (Expiration dates don’t matter). Please speak with one of us with questions, comments, or concerns: Sandie Post, Kathy Lewis, Anita Polzin, Jan Poush - GS DESIGN TEAM 2016

Help Restock Your Food Pantry!

Please remember that, even though it’s called a food pantry, we also provide toiletries to our guests! Staples like toilet paper, laundry and dish soap, shampoo, diapers, toothpaste, and more are always in high demand. This month, instead of bringing food, please consider donating some of these items.

Thanks for all you do!

July Mission of the Month The Redford Brightmoor Initiative

“Making connections. Building Communities. Transforming lives.”

Door to door, Good Shepherd and Brightmoor are less than 10 miles apart. The Brightmoor ministry is located at 12065 West Outer Drive, Detroit. This is an opportunity to truly help our neighbors. Every 5th Sunday, Good Shepherd collects clothes and household items for the Free Store. The Brightmoor Free Store provides new and gently used clothing, household goods, and books – totally free. More than 1,100 people have shopped at the Brightmoor Free Store since it opened in January 2014, with 60-100 people shopping here each week. The Free Store is open Saturdays from 10am-1pm. In addition to small household items and clothes, the ministry picks up furniture and appliances from donors. They deliver appliances to people with an immediate need. Once a month, they set up the remaining items in the parking lot for shoppers to select one item per household. After shopping at that free store, customers are invited to a hot lunch. Good Shepherd has served 3 lunches, providing our famous spaghetti, and homemade stew and biscuits prepared by John Mihalik. Scott Williams, who has helped serve, said, “It’s good to see what the program does, especially the social part. You get to see what people get out of the program.” To benefit this program you can: Serve at future lunches; Donate gently used clothes and clean, workable household items at 5th Sunday clothing drive at Good Shepherd; Support Brightmoor ministry monetarily as the July mission of the month.

COVENANT is an in-depth group Bible study in which participants read and discuss the Bible together, learning how to love God and each other better. The second segment has ended, and we will be taking a break from study during the summer.

Our Lay Leader, Jean Mackey, will lead the next 8-episode segment which begins on September 8th. Please plan to be part of the next 8-week session of this engaging, in-depth Bible study. All are welcome, regardless of attendance at the previous segments. Sign up in the Opportunity Center.

Walking and Biking With God

Anyone who would like an early morning time spent with God is welcome to join us! We walk Tuesday and Thursday at the track behind O.L. Smith middle school in Dearborn at 6:30am and again on Saturday morning at 7:00. With the weather turning for the better sometimes we will venture out on Saturday to different locations (Hines Dr., the nature trail behind Andiamo's, etc.) Saturday mornings we meet up at Panera Cares for breakfast and conversation. Please consider joining us – it is a great way to start your day! Any questions, please feel free to contact Kathy Lewis.

Healthy Dearborn

In the first quarter of 2016, Georgia Grovesteen and

Carla Schneider, representing Good Shepherd

United Methodist Church, attended the first

community meeting of Healthy Dearborn, a

project born out of a mandatory Community Health

Needs Assessment (CHNA) guided by Oakwood

Healthcare System. Below is a brief recap of

purpose & progress to date.

Four distinct community health needs were

discovered during the CHNA process: access to

care, obesity, cardiovascular (CVD) and diabetes.

In acknowledgment of these needs, the Healthy

Dearborn initiative was created to address viable

solutions.

Healthy Dearborn is a community united to

promote a healthier tomorrow!

Our Vision: Dearborn, a thriving, diverse

community, will fully embrace a unified culture of

health where everyone enjoys whole health (mind,

body, spirit), with equal access to healthy foods,

health care, green space and opportunities for safe,

active living.

Our Mission: We will create valuable opportunities

for people in Dearborn to practice healthy lifestyles

by enriching their minds, nurturing their bodies and

revitalizing their spirit.

United under Healthy Dearborn is a cross section

of the community including leaders and

representatives from business, city, churches,

neighborhoods, researchers and schools. Goals and

objectives are part of the strategic planning and help

translate the mission and vision into reality. Five

Action Teams have been created: Healthy

Transportation, Healthy at Play; Healthy Foods;

Healthy Schools; Healthy Worksites. These action

teams meet monthly to develop and execute

specific, measurable objectives for each strategic

goal.

Every citizen is welcome and invited to participate

in creating a sustainable Healthy Dearborn.

If you’re interested, contact Carla Schneider.

There are new name badges arranged alphabetically on the spinning stand in the lobby. Identifying ourselves is a first step in extending hospitality to those who worship with us. It’s also a good way for our new pastor and his family to get to know us. If you don’t see your badge, or if you wish your name to appear differently than what you see, please let Georgia Grovesteen know. Making a new badge is easy.

Dear Friends in Christ, We would like to express our deep and sincere appreciation for the many wonderful expressions of love and care you offered us through your cards, comments, hugs, and tears on Sunday, July 19th as well as before and after that date. The gifts we received are very important and meaningful. They will forever hold a cherished place in our household. We want to thank all of you for the extraordinary gift of tickets to attend the Paul Simon concert at Meadowbrook. We had a marvelous time as our favorite musical artist sang for 2½ hours without a break and yes, he did sing "Still Crazy After All These Years!"

We've always loved the music of Simon and Garfunkel and later the solo work of Paul

Simon, but now, when we hear one of his tunes, we will think fondly of all our dear friends at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Dearborn. Our time together has been too brief but now we must go to a new vineyard. As we do we will take the memories of you and Good Shepherd with us in our hearts. Our love and prayers are with you always. Grace, Peace, and Many Blessings

Pastor Doug & Sharon

Special thanks to Pastor Doug, Sharon, and all my church family for visits, calls, and many cards. I am especially grateful for your prayers. You have brightened many days. My love and God’s special blessings to all of you.

Delores Lebeck

To the Caring Congregation of Good Shepherd:

Thank you for the prayers, cards, and concerns during the recent illness and passing of our daughter, Annette. A special thank you to Pastor Doug for the beautiful memorial service. Losing a daughter is never easy, but the support from all of you let us know we were not alone. Thanks for your concern and God Bless!
