I hope you are all staying safe and implementing the requirements of this unfortunately vital social distancing directive under the State of Emergency declared by the province. I am writing for a number of reasons. The first is to express my solidarity with New Ross on the anniversary of my arrival back in Canada. I have been Director for 1 year now, and it has been a great year of learning, challenges, projects, plans and fun. I really appreciate how Ross Farm Museum and the community have welcomed me back after so many years away. I know technically my family and I are on the wrong side of Sherbrooke Lake, but we can’t let a little geography get in the way of a good thing! I found the Forties Road passable pretty much all winter and if you’re on your way to work in New Ross, you make the effort! Thank you all for a great first year, even though none of us would have predicted the current situation with Covid-19. As you will have read on our social media and road sign, because of the medical situation and the State

Page 5: The Flyer - New Ross Family Resource Centrenrfrc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/March-2020-final.pdf2020/03/03  · The Flyer Thursday March 26, 2020 The deadline for receiving items

of Emergency, Ross Farm Museum and the property it occupies is closed to the public until further notice. This includes all access points such as our trail system and the Lions Park. Although we are not really a park nor a provincial trail, it seems to me to be the most diligent decision to make in the interest of public health. Our trails function the way trails within a provincial park would function, permitting access to non-trail structures and aspects of the museum that we must be able to monitor and maintain. Thank you very much for your patience and support on this. I understand that it may appear extreme to ask people not to go for a walk in our woods. Given what we know about Covid-19, as a provincial museum director I must act in the interest of protecting public health and safety to the greatest extent that I can. Once we have clear and formal evidence that the Covid-19 virus is under control in the province we will open again. In the meantime, staff is working carefully, safely and diligently to prepare for that day. We still look forward to celebrating our 50th birthday on July 11th, and New Ross’s birthday on August 7th and we hope that the summer brings better days! Our social media pages have updates and memories to share with you, so please enjoy! Stay safe, be patient and kind to each other, and thank you! Pete Cullen, Director – Ross Farm Museum ***********************************************************************

A Message From Your Community Development Coordinator

Nadine Hackney Community Development Coordinator, Recreation and Parks

Municipality of Chester PO Box 369 151 King Street, Chester, NS B0J 1J0 Cell: 902-275-8503 E-mail: [email protected] Web: www.chester.ca

It’s Spring!

The change of season this year went by largely unnoticed because of the ongoing COVID-19 situation but here we are...does anybody else feel like a big PAUSE button has been pressed over the world? At this moment in time we are all having to figure out how to navigate this unchartered territory and the challenges, changes, apprehension and everything along with it. We want you to know that we are here to help in any way that we can...like you, we are taking this one day at a time (with some things it’s more like one hour at a time!), and we are only a phone call away. There is a lot of uncertainty right now, but there is one thing I know for sure after seeing first-hand the community’s response to the situation—People want to support

each other! It has been amazing to see so many people coming together (while staying apart!), and offering to do whatever they can to help out. I have heard of phone trees being set up for social connection, grocery deliveries for anyone who needs it, music be-ing played online, stories being read out loud and recorded for children to watch, and so much more...so THANK YOU! Thank you for everything you are doing, and please if you are looking for support in any way I want you to feel welcome to reach out.

So...What’s happening with Community Development and Recreation Services within the Municipality of Chester right now? We are working from home to continue to support you and find new ways to foster community health and well being and promote recreation during this time. Although you may see many changes in the near future, we are still planning some of our key events such as Volunteer Awareness Week and Awards, the Annual Cut n’ Run, Mayfest Weekend, and more...we are also looking forward to our two summer staff who will be joining our team again this year! Their roles might look different this year but we are all working together to find creative ways to keep the community connected. In the meantime...I encourage you practice self-care, whatever that might look like for you! I will be playing with my dogs in the yard, starting some seeds indoors, bird-watching, looking for new buds and signs of spring in my garden, doing some art, reading, and phoning my family and friends to stay connected. How about you?
