Board of Directors - President

Dear Fellow Congregants, Summer may appear to be a quieter me at Temple Chai, but behind the scenes, there is considerable work and planning underway for the High Holy Days, and to develop programming for the upcoming year. Below is a small sample of some of the exci ng things you will see and experience this coming year.WorshipPrayer Lab will be back! If you have not yet been to a Prayer Lab service, make it a point to a end. There will be Prayer Lab services during the erev High Holy Day services, and on select Kabbalat Shabbats. They are all diff erent. They are inspira onal, musical, refl ec ve, and innova ve. Also, this year, we will be celebra ng Shabbat in the Hood. As a community, we will worship and celebrate Shabbat in various homes and other loca ons throughout Phoenix. You will also see Friday Food Truck Kabbalat Shabbats, along with Camp Shabbat, and many retreats. Adult ProgrammingBat Chai programming will be centered on the theme Taste of Time. Women of all ages will want to join Cantor Sharona Feller and Bat Chai for events that will follow our Jewish yearly cycle, and will educate and inspire. The fi rst event, Entering Sacred Time, is scheduled for September 18th. There will be several Men’s events this year, in addi on to the Men’s Retreat with Cantor Wolman and Rabbi Berk. The fi rst Men’s event will be Sunday football on October 30th. The Shalom Center, now under the direc on of Rabbi Koppell, will con nue its strong programs this year. Watch for informa on on book groups, Mussar, healing services, caring community programs, Chevra Kaddisha and Shiva support. Also, the return of Eco-Chai! The Shalom Center has long been an integral and unique part of Temple Chai, and will con nue to serve our community. The Adult Educa on off erings at Temple Chai for this coming year are very exci ng. The Melton school is returning to Temple Chai! Our partnership with Valley Beit Midrash will mean several engaging and innova ve speakers at Temple Chai, including Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, Rabbi Darren Kleinberg and Rabbi Bill Berk! We will con nue to have our regular Torah study and other educa onal groups that bring meaning and community to our synagogue.Youth and FamiliesOur Early Childhood Center is strong and growing. Enrollment is at its highest level ever! Programming, under the direc on of Mary Passell, is nurturing and mo va ng. It is fabulous seeing our youngest members in the halls learning, exploring and growing. The regular programming includes music, Hebrew, pre-reading skills, and much more. I am extremely proud that our synagogue off ers such a warm, safe, engaging and fun environment for the youngest in our community. Our Religious School directors, Amanda Campbell and Ariela Ben-Dor, have spent the spring and summer months planning updates and some changes to our educa onal program. Sundays will now be a longer day, off ering unique educa onal and community-building programs for our youth and families. Of course, educa on and engagement are always the priority. Be sure to stop by on a Sunday morning and see the campus full of ac vity. Our teen youth group, TCTY, is already known throughout the Reform movement as one of the largest and most successful chapters. A full year of ac vi es is planned, along with Regional events. I urge all of our teens to a end at least one event this year. It is a great community, off ering fun and leadership building opportuni es. I could not be more proud of Temple Chai and our clergy and staff for the though ul work they are doing to make sure we have strong, meaningful, and engaging programming of many types. I am sure you will fi nd something interes ng for you and your family. I hope you enjoy the remaining weeks of summer and I look forward to seeing you at our synagogue.

L’shalom,

Debbie Blyn,President, Board of Directors

Ask me. I’ll tell you…By Sandy Rife, Mt. Sinai Cemetery

Why do we wash our hands before leaving the cemetery and entering a house of mourning?

The presence of a dead body is considered a source of ritual impurity. People who have been at a funeral and/or at a cemetery in the presence of a dead body wash their hands before entering a home. Sometimes this is done at the cemetery

or before entering the shiva house. Water is considered the source of all life, so pouring water over one’s hands makes us focus on life and sym-bolically remove spiritual impurity, not physical uncleanness. This is a physical act with spiritual

ramifications.
