The Fifth Sunday of Easter Sunday + May 10, 2020 8:30 a.m. This week we continue exploring the sheltering images of Christ, the Good Shepherd. PRELUDE “The Good Shepherd” Dale Wood PSALM selected from Psalm 139 Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! Lord, you have searched me out and known me; You know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You trace my journeys and my resting places and are acquainted with all my ways. Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, but you, O Lord, know it altogether. You encompass me behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand will lead me and your right hand hold me fast. You yourself created my inmost parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will thank you because I am marvelously made; your works are wonderful and I know it well. PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, your Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Give us grace to love one another, to follow in the way of his commandments, and to share his risen life with all the world, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Congregational responses are in bold

The Fifth Sunday of Easter Sunday + May 10, 2020

8:30 a.m. This week we continue exploring the sheltering

images of Christ, the Good Shepherd.

PRELUDE “The Good Shepherd” Dale Wood

PSALM selected from Psalm 139 Alleluia!

Amen.

READING 1 Peter 2:2-10 After the reading: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL John 14:1-14 Before the reading: The Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord.

Following the reading: The Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON

MUSICAL REFLECTION “Shelter Me” Michael Joncas Twin Cities composer Father Michael Joncas (University of St. Thomas) wrote this piece as a “song-prayer” for the world experiencing the coronavirus pandemic. In a matter of weeks it has become nationally known. The text and refrain can be found at the end of the bulletin.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Each petition concludes:

Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

LORD’S PRAYER Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

SHELTER ME (text)

Shepherd and sheep, my God and I: to fresh green fields you led my steps in days gone by. You gave me rest by quiet springs and filled my soul with peace your loving presence brings.

Refrain: O shelter me, O shelter me: the way ahead is dark and difficult to see. O shelter me, O shelter me: all will be well if only you will shelter me.

Yet now I tread a diff’rent way; death dogs my path with stealthy steps from day to day. I cannot find your peaceful place but dwell in dreary darkness, longing for your face.

Refrain

I will look back in days to come and realize your faithfulness has led me home. Within your house I’ll find my peace, trusting that in your mercy you have sheltered me.
