THE FALL SEASON 1987

1 AUGUST - 30 NOVEMBER

Matt Anderson and Tom Kemp

Al 1 in all, it appears to have oeen an outstanding fal 1 migration season. A total of 289 species were reported Cplus an add1t1onal 5 undocumented species>. The list of rare and out-of-season sightings was long; more than 60 documentation forms were received.

Geographical coverage was the most c001prehens1ve yet since the recent revival of The Ohio Cardinal. Close to 25 reports were received from the membership from throughout the state.

A very brief synopsis of the weather shws that August was generally hot until the last week of the month when north winds brought sooie cooler temperatures and the first significant push of migrants. September was wetter than normal with above-average temperatures. Winds, in general, seemed to be out of the west and southwest. Mi gr at ion during the month was for the most part unspectacular but still managed to provide a number of interesting observations . The highlight of October was a series of strong cold fronts which brought with them an excel lent migration of waterbirds along the Lake Erie shoreline.

The following sulllllarizes some of the more interesting observations throughout the Fall season.

Loons through Herons

C011111on loons appeared somewhat earlier than normal and in good numbers with a peak of 300 in Erie County on October 31. Several Red-throated Loons were seen. Many reports of Eared Grebes were received, but most were not appropriately documented. A Northern Gannet was at Huron on November 21. Double-crested Covmorants continued their recent surge-2000 were estimated in Sandusky Bay on November 16 and an 1mpress1 ve in I and count of 95 came from C. J. Brown Reservo1 r on October 11. Herons appeared to be in about normal numbers with the usual scattered reports of Snwy Egrets and Little Blue Herons. No Tricolored Heron sightings were submitted.

S\ians through Ruddv Duck

Thirty-three species of waterfowl were seen during the period. Most large concentrations of Tundra S\ians occurred in m1 d-November w 1th a peak of 500 at both Oberlin on November 10 and Austintown November 19. Puddle ducks appeared to be in normal numbers as did most diving ducks. Oldsquaws and al I three scoters were reported. A spectacular concentration of Red-breasted Mergansers estimated at 40,000 was seen in Erie County on November 9. Unusual waterfowl species reported during the period included several Harlequin Ducks at Huron in late October and early November.

Vultures through Fa lcons

Migration for this group was generally unspectacular. No unusually large concentrations of Broad-winged Hawks were noted. The peak of the Broad-winged flight occurred September 20-22 when five locations, al I in western Ohio, had 400 or more pass by. Merl ins were sighted on two occasions and Peregrines two in addition to the pair that remains in downtown Toledo. It appears that Rough-legged Hawks wi ll be in low numbers this winter as only two were reported during the fall period.

Pheasants throygb Cranes

Northern Bobwhites were reported from scattered locat ions but numbers continue to oe quite low. Unusual at any time of year, two reports of Yellow Rails were particular ly noteworthy and certainly a surprise was the dead Black Rail found at Magee Marsh on September 13.

Shorebirds

Gooa shoreb1ra h.~bt tat Yas, 1n general, hard t.o find this fall. Notable except ions were Gordon Park 1n Cleveland during August , Turtle Hole at the W1nous Point shooting Cl ub and a l arge mudf l at on the Little Portage river in Ottawa County 1n August and September. Metzger Marsh i n October and ear l y November, and the Maumee River Rap i ds throughout the per i od. Very few shorebirds went unreported as 35 varieties were sighted. Unusual species incl uded a Cur l ew sandp iper at Winous Point August 21-24, numerous Buff-breasted Sandpipers and Red Phalanopes and a couple of extreme l y late Wilson; s Phalaropes at Metzer Marsh on November 20.

Jaegers through Terns

One of the outstanding events of the season was the unprecedented fli gh t of Sab1ne·s Gulls along the Lake Erie shorel 1ne. Six separate sightings occurred, all from ear ly to mid-October. During the same time period, numerous Jaegers were also observed. Four out of the half dozen October and early November birds went un1dent i f 1ed with the other two tagged as Paras1t 1cs. There were the usual scattered observat i ons of Laughing, Franklin ' s, and Lesser Bl ack-backed Gui Is. Only one Glaucous Gull had been seen by the end of the fall period. Likewi se , Thayer ' s and Litt l e Gull observat i ons were limited to one or two sight i ngs and Black-headed Gulls ~ent unrepor ted. The only large concentration of Bonaparte' s Gui ls reported was on November 5 when approx imatel y 5000 were seen along Lake Er i e 1n Erie and Ottawa Counties. 600 Conrnon and 200 Forster ' s Terns were estimated in Erie County on October 7. One Least Tern was obseved at CJ Brown Reservoir 1n mid·-September.

Doyes through $wallows

A report of nesting Barn Owls fr001 Tuscarawas County is certainly encouraging. Snowy Owls appeared to be staging another rnvas1 on by the end of the per 1 od w1 th 9 separate observat 1 ons including one at Xenia, Ohio. Rufous HWIJllingbirds made news again with second and third state records. CSee separate article in this issue.) A Western Kingbird was at Mentor Headlands on September 20 and a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher was found in Wayne County on August 16. A spectacular concentration of Purple Martins on South Bass Island on August 31 was est imated at 20,000 birds. Other noteworthy swallow concentrations include 8000 Tree S'Wa l lows in Ottawa County on Oxtober 2, 3000 Bank Swallows at Wi nous Point on August 24, and 2000 Barn swallows on South Bass I sl and August 16.

Jays throuah Warblers

1\io Northern Shrikes had been observed by the end of the period, and two undocumented Loggerhead Shrike reports were also received . Highly unexpected was an extremely late Golden-wi nged Warbler at Bend View Park along the Maumee River on November 21. Most warblers appear ed to pass through in fairly normal numbers - 36 species were reported. An observer al ong Lake Er i e c0111Dented that this fall brought one of the heaviest movements ever of Cape May and Blackpoll Warb lers . An amazing 500 Blackpolls were estimated along the lakeshore September 13.

Tanagers through House Sparrows

Several Sharp-tailed Sparrows were seen al ong the Lake Erie shore! i ne. An impressive 300 White-crOIJned Sparrows were at Spr i ng Valley October 24 and 25. Several decent -si zed flocks of Snow Buntings were reported by the end of the fall season, but Lapland Longspurs appeared to be quite scarce . Early indications did not po int toward an impressive fl i ght of winter f i nches. Pine Sisk1ns were scattered and in fairly low numbers. Purple Finches once again seemed to be relatively scarce . Three Red Crossbl I ls were seen in Lorain on Novenber 11. House Finches continue their amazing explosion 1n numbers and d1str1bution.

As always we welcane feedback fr001 subscribers of The Ohio Cardinal. Let us know what you think about recent issues. In the following species sunmary, under l ined species are considered unusual and species marked 1D' should be documented. An astensk means documentation was received for the sighting.
