PROJECT1139

The museum is pleased to announce thatwe have been given the unique opportunity toacquire a rare piece of Frisco history... awooden caboose No. 1139, built by the Friscobetween 1938 and 1940. It is complete withtrucks, track, and crossties and while it iscurrently in a deteriorated state of repair,it is completely restorable. Its style andconstruction is representative of Friscooperations at the height of the steam era.The museum has had many inquires aboutacquiring rolling stock. However, we havealways been reluctant to do so, waiting forthe right one to come along. Caboose No.1139 is what we have been waiting for!

The Board of Directors, meeting onNovember 1, authorized the establishment of"PROJECT 1139," our caboose acquisitionfund. It will cost $2,700.00 to acquire andmove the caboose to the museum. DONATIONSOF ANY AMOUNT ARE NEEDED AND WELCOMED! The

above pen and ink drawing of No. 1139 hasbeen drawn exclusively for the museum andfor each person who donates $50.00 or more,we will present them with a print of thedrawing signed and numbered by the artist.There will only be 100 of them printed! Fora donation of $100.00 or more, the donorsname will also be engraved on a plaque thatwill be permanently displayed in the cabooseonce it is restored. For a donation of$500.00 or more, the donor will, in additionto the print and name on the caboose plaque,receive an individual plaque with thecaboose drawing engraved on it and alifetime membership in our Frisco Folks!

This is indeed a rare opportunity to bea part of preserving Frisco history and wetrust Frisco Folks and Frisco fans acrossthe country will be a part of "PROJECT1139!"

Christmas Open HouseThe museum is pleased to announce its

second annual CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE. The twoweekends prior to Christmas, December 12-13and 19-20, the museum's Ash Grove facilitywill be open extended hours: 10:00 a.m. to6:00 p.m. Saturday and 2:00 p.m. to 6:00p.m. on Sunday.

During the open house the museum willfeature a collection of train and trainrelated Christmas decorations. The exhibit,to be displayed throughout the museum,numbers in excess of 200 pieces and includessuch items as tree ornaments, candles, musicboxes, Christmas cards, and novelty items.

The first 100 families to visit themuseum during the open house will receive ahand-made wooden train ornament, the secondin a series, crafted especially for theoccasion. A "SANTA SPECIAL' coloringpicture will be given to all the childrenvisiting the museum.

We invite all members and friends ofthe museum to share in this specialcelebration of a special holiday season!

Retired Frisco Engine Bell

Rings Vespers For Church

On Gold Coast West Africa

When the Frisco started retiring itssteam engines in the late 1940's and early1950's, the locomotive bells were salvagedand given to various individuals, civicorganizations, and churches. The bellcurrently on display in the museum wasoriginally given to a church. One suchlocomotive bell found its way to a locationfar removed from service on the Frisco.

In October, 1953, at the request ofRev. Charles Roesslein, a Frisco bell wasshipped to the Gold Coast of West Africa foruse at a small missionary church. When thebell arrived around Christmas time, membersof the congregation quickly erected a towerfrom which the bell could ring out theChristmas spirit. The church was built outof mud with a corrugated aluminum roof.

EDITORS NOTE: Considering that it wasthirty-four years ago that the bell wasshipped and considering the turmoil much ofAfrica has experienced in the last 34 years,one can't help but wonder what ever happenedto the bell!

DOWN AT THE DEPOT

What do Y45C, EA506, EA523; MuskogeeSubdivision, Creek Subdivision, Red RiverDivision, Central Division, SouthwesternDivision; mile post 506.4, all have incommon? They have, at one time or another,been station numbers, subdivision anddivision designations, and location of abeautiful depot once situated in the easternOklahoma town of Muskogee.

Built in 1902, and enlarged in 1914,the Muskogee station was a large facility(173'9" x 20') constructed of 13" limestone'brick and a red tile roof. It included alarge waiting room complete with indoortoilets, a baggage room, ticket office, newsstand, and a 31' covered platform on thenorthwest end. One interesting feature ofthe depot, common in most Oklahoma stations,was separate waiting room and rest roomfacilities for negro passengers. Theexistence of such segregated facilities wasin compliance with an

segregate of Legislature,

State of Oklahoma, December 18, 1907," whichstated:

SECTION 2. Every railroad company, street car company, urban. suburban,or interurban car company shall provide for and maintain separate waiting rooms atall their passenger depots for the accommodation of the white and negro races, whichseparate waiting rooms shall be equal in all points of comfort and convenience. Eachwaiting room shall bear in a conspicuous place words in plain letters indicating the racefor which it is set apart. It shall be unlawful for any person to use, occupy or to remainin any waiting room, toilet room, or at any water tank in any passenger depot in thisState, set apart to a race to which he does not belong.

When first built, the Muskogee depotwas the western terminus of The Ozark andCherokee Central Railroad Co., incorporatedon November 29, 1899. The Shawnee,Oklahoma, and Missouri Coal and Railway Co.extended the line to Okmulgee in 1903, theremaking connections with the St. Louis,Oklahoma, and Southern Railway Co. By 1907,all three lines were part of the Friscosystem.

During its tour of duty, the Muskogeedepot was served by a variety of numberedtrains, motorcar service, and one of theFrisco's most well known named trains, the"Texas Special," which made its lastscheduled run through Muskogee on January 4,1959. In June, 1972, the old depot wasretired and in 1974 a new 16'x24' Parklinestation was built.

It is interesting to note that whileone might think the name "Muskogee" isunique to Oklahoma, the Frisco also operateda station in "Muscogee", Florida, twenty–twomiles north of Pensacola.

The Florida car was built in June, 1896,by the Ohio Falls Car Company as a 63 ft.composite business car. While its originalowner is unknown, the car was on the rosterof the St. Louis, Memphis, and SoutheasternRailroad Company as car No. 1200, when theFrisco acquired it in July, 1907. The St.L. M. & S. originally operated track andfacilities from Nash to Lilbourn, inSoutheast Missouri.

While existing records do not indicatewhat the interior arrangement andfurnishings were, chances are it was similarto the No. 2200 car, both of which werebuilt by the Ohio Falls Company withintwelve years of each other. The car weighed186,600 lbs., and carried the standardPullman green, black roof, and goldlettering color scheme of the executivefleet.

In May, 1947, No. 1200 was re-numberedNo. 6, and in February, 1948, it was againre-numbered No. 11 so that the number 3 car(former 1924) could assume the number 6position on the roster. In June, 1954, No.11 was assigned the name Florida. In May,1959, the car was placed in storage and inFebruary, 1965, it was sold to a privatecorporation.

While in service, the Florida car wasassigned to Assistant General Manager L.B.Clary and Assistant Chief Engineer E.L.Anderson. When Mr. Anderson was promoted toChief Engineer he, along with the newAssistant Chief Engineer F.E. Short, bothused the services of the executive coach.=

FRISCO SURVIVORS

In 1912, the Schenectady LocomotiveWorks built forty 2-8-0 Consolidation typeengines for the Frisco, Nos. 1306-1345.While originally built to burn coal,twenty-two of the engines were laterconverted to oil burners. Between 1943 and1946, seven on the 1300's were rebuilt bythe Frisco in its West Shops in Springfield,MO. Numbers 1313, 1316, 1318, 1321, 1322,1341, and 1342 became 2-8-2 Mikado typeengines Nos. 1350-1356. Used primarily asroad freight engines, most of the 1300'swere in service on the Central and WesternDivisions of the Frisco through 1951.Retirement for the 1300's came in 1952 andby the end of the year all but three weresold for scrap.

The three survivors of the 1300 classare Nos. 1351, 1352, and 1355. No. 1351,rebuilt from No. 1313 was presented to thecity of Memphis, TN in October, 1952, and iscurrently on display in that city'sfairgrounds. No. 1352, rebuilt from No.1321, was given to Kansas City, MO inDecember, 1952, for display in Swope Park.The engine has since been moved out of thepark and is currently in storage in theKansas City area. No. 1355, rebuilt fromNo. 1318, ultimately found its way toPensacola, FL in May, 1957, and is currentlyon display at Coyle and West Garden Streetsin that city.

THE FRISCO FAMILYKANSAS MIDLAND RAILROAD COMPANY

The Kansas Midland Railroad Company wasincorporated September 25, 1900, for thesole purpose of creating a corporationthrough which the property and franchises ofthe Kansas Midland Railway Company could betransferred to the St. Louis and SanFrancisco Railroad Company.

The Kansas Midland Railway Company wasincorporated February 8, 1886, under thelaws of Kansas. The company was initiallycontrolled by the Kansas Construction andImprovement Company, a New Jersycorporation, but on March 7, 1887, beforeconstruction of its property was commenced,control passed to the St. Louis and SanFrancisco Railway Company.

In 1893, the company defaulted paymentof interest on its first mortgage bonds, andon July 1, 1896, as the result offoreclosure proceedings instituted by theMercantile Trust Company, A.L. Wolff wasappointed trustee. On July 25, 1900, thecompany's franchises and property were soldat public auction under foreclosure of itsfirst mortgage to Alfred R. Pick and HarryBronner, who were the representatives of theholders of the company's first mortgagebonds.

On September 25, 1900, the KansasMidland Railroad Company was incorporatedand on October 1, 1900, the foreclosedfranchises and property were conveyed tothat company by the St. Louis and SanFrancisco Railroad Company. On October 1,1900, the property of the company consistedof about 106 miles of standard gauge, singletrack railroad, located entirely in Kansas,extending from Wichita to Ellsworth.

CHEESE SPREAD

4 ounces beer4 5-ounce jars Old English or Cheddar cheese1 large clove garlic (minced)2 Tsp minced onion1/8 Tsp Cayenne1/8 Tsp or less Tolono1/2 Tsp Worcestershire

Salt to taste

Heat beer over low heat; when it is warmed,combine all ingredients except beer inblending or automatic mixer. Add warm beeruntil it is of spreading consistency. Willserve 25 or 30.

WHITE FUDGE

1 cup cream3 cups sugar4 Tbs butter1/2 cup white syrup8 marshmallows (cut fine)1 package candied cherries1 package candies pineapple1 cup nut meats

Cook the first four ingredients to mediumball stage. Add marshmallows and melt inhot mixture. Beat until fairly stiff, thenadd the other ingredients and pour intobuttered plate. Marachino cherries may beused instead of the candied cherries, oromit the fruit and nut meats and addcocoanut.
