June 2020

Dear Euclid Parents and Community,

As the 2019-20 school year draws to a close and summer break begins, I would like to take the opportunity to express my gratitude for the support of our students, teachers, and school. I would also like to share how incredibly proud I am of our students espe-cially with the grit and perseverance shown in recent months.

As our district and school prepares for the start of the 2020-21 school year in August, a variety of scenarios may need to be considered during these exceptional times. As has been the case since the unprecedented time began in March, the situation continues to evolve. We recognize that this is an ever changing situation. Never before have we, as a large scale education community, not known exactly what to plan for in terms of the coming school year. We are in the challenging position of trying to make sense of the unknown, making the best decisions about prioritizing limited resources and providing reassurance and direction for our community. Please know that there is an LPS Task Force, Restart 2020-21, working on a multitiered plan using the input and feedback from parents, staff and students. Watch for communication from both Euclid and Littleton Public Schools in the coming weeks.

During the summer months, especially with many social distancing recommendations in place, students are encouraged to explore educational resources. Here is a great place to start: Euclid Home-School Resources. Here is also a family resource of “life skills” to explore at this link - Life Skills for Secondary Students

Additionally, I have great news! LPS was able to purchase Dreambox licenses for all K-8 students for this summer and the 20/21 school year. Please encourage your students to use the software throughout the summer. Know that student progress is attached to their student id number and next year's teachers will be able to see the progress that students make over the summer. Please remind students that in order to experience instructional benefit, students should be using the program a minimum of 3 times per week for a min-

imum of 15 minutes per day. See page 8 of this newsletter for information on a Euclid Dreambox competition.

Summer is a great time for fun and relaxation. It is also a great time for choice reading. Reading is a strong foundational skill for knowledge acquisition in all content areas. Please encourage your student to read over the summer months. Con-tained in this month’s edition of the Falcon Flier is an infographic on the impact of reading just 20 minutes a day. Some-times a student will say, “I don’t like to read.” The best response to this is, “We just haven’t found the right book for you, yet.”

The end of this school year brings some very special staff announcements and celebrations. Euclid has four individuals retiring this year. It is difficult to describe in words the positive impact and far reaching influence of these individuals. Col-lectively, they have given Euclid 72 years of experience and dedication, that is right, 72 years! Congratulations to the Euclid Retirees-

Becky Hayes - 8th grade Language Arts, 22 years at Euclid

Floren Rager - Special Education, 17 years at Euclid

Nalisha Cotter - Office Manager, 21 years at Euclid

Raso Markovic - Custodian, 12 years at Euclid

Additionally, we have two staff members who are leaving Euclid but will be “Forever Falcons” Goodbye to-

Britany Borel - special education teacher. Britany is staying in LPS and is moving to the elementary level.

Meet the New Staff Ben Baroch - Resource Teacher

I have been working with children for the past 8 years in settings ranging from juvenile corrections to treatment centers to public schools. Over the past three years, I taught special edu-cation, first at Shiloh Academy in Thornton, and most recently teaching Affective Needs at Aurora Hills Mid-dle School. In my free time, I enjoy the stereotypical Colorado activities with my fiancé Brita and dog Murphy (hiking, biking, camping, etc.) as well as playing bass guitar in my pop-punk

band (Stray the Course) and woodworking in my shop to create personal home furniture pieces. I am looking for-ward to joining the Euclid community and cannot wait to meet all of you in person!

Bonny Blankenship - Parapro I am so excited to be joining the Euclid Team. I have been teaching preschool at Highland Elementary for the last 5 years. I loved working with my pre-schoolers, their families and all of the Highland Staff. I am thrilled to contin-ue my journey and have the chance to work with middle schoolers and the great staff at Euclid. I am originally from Michigan and enjoy going back

every summer. My husband and I have two wonderful children. Summer will be a junior at Heritage and Ben will be in 7th grade here at Euclid. When I am not at school I enjoy spending time with my family. We love to play games, watch sports or play sports. I really like to spend time outdoors whether it be walking my two dogs, biking or trying to grow a garden. I am looking forward to being a Falcon!

Rebecca Bossert - Resource Teacher I grew up in Longmont, Colorado, and received my BA in psycholo-gy from the University of Colora-do at Boulder. Prior to becoming a teacher, I spent several years as a paraprofessional/behavior coach in St. Vrain Valley School Dis-trict. I received her MA in special education at the University of Northern Colorado and I’m enter-ing her 3rd year teaching in Little-ton Public Schools. I come to Eu-clid from Lenski Elementary/

Newton Middle and am excited to be joining the Euclid team. Outside of school, I enjoy outdoor sports, comedy, and reading.

Madison Elson - World Language Teacher I'm from Dayton, OH and moved to Colorado with my family after graduating high school. Before college, I worked in Douglas County at an elementary school where I fell in love with teaching and knew that it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life, so I decided to study Educa-tion at the University of Colorado Boulder. At CU I studied Spanish

Language and Literature, Education, and received a minor in Studio Art. Learning a second language is something that I am very passionate about and has helped me connect with people all over the world in so many ways, and I am looking forward to sharing this with my students. As a first-year teacher, I am very excited to work with middle school students and can't wait for the upcoming school year at Euclid Middle School!

Amber Howard - 7th Grade Math Teacher I’m so excited to join the Falcon family. Next year will be my fourth year teaching. I was born, raised, and educated in Georgia, but I’ve spent the last three years teaching math and science in Florida. I have always loved math and science and studied chemistry in college. In my class-room, I focus on building meaningful relationships, making math relevant to students’ lives, and engaging stu-dents in rigorous tasks that promote critical thinking. I love teaching mid-dle school kids and am thankful for

the opportunity to positively impact their lives and pre-pare them for successful futures. My personal interests include Harry Potter, art, comedy, and music. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, spending time outdoors, and hanging out with my family, friends, and two cats. I can’t wait to move to Littleton and look forward to getting to know the students, staff, and community at Euclid.

Melissa Hunter - Admin Assistant to Principal I am a Native Coloradoan. I’m married with four grown children and 2 grandchildren. I enjoy, gar-dening, reading and attending car shows. I have been with LPS for 7 years and I’m looking forward to this next chapter in my career at Euclid!

Andrew Holcombe - Instrumental Music Teacher I am so excited to be joining Eu-clid for my ninth year of teaching! After graduating from the Univer-sity of Northern Colorado in 2012, I taught band at University Schools to 6-12 grade students in Greeley. In May of 2016 I com-pleted a Master of Music degree from UNC and accepted a band teaching position at Creighton

Middle School and the Lakewood Area Elementary Schools. I have performed regularly with the Fort Collins Wind Symphony, Colorado Wind Ensemble, with local bands and in musical productions, and have presented clin-ics at the Colorado Bandmasters Association Convention. Recently I received the "Outstanding Young Bandmaster" award from the Music Honor Fraternity, Phi Beta Mu, and am an active member of several professional organiza-tions. In my free time I love spending time with my wife and daughter (and our two cats), as well as cycling, hiking, seeing live performances and playing games. I am looking forward to teaching in LPS and joining what looks like a great staff at Euclid!

Nina Van Noy - 6th Grade LA Teacher I grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska and completed my first year of college at Nebraska-Lincoln. Once I had the chance to visit my sister at Colorado Christian University, I decided to trans-fer schools before my sophomore year of college. I started studying Secondary English Education at CCU, and for my first field experience, I was place at none other than Euclid Middle School! I loved the team and the school, so I chose to stay with Euclid for my sec-ond field experience and student teach-ing. I have such a heart for middle

schoolers, and I am so excited that I get to continue my teaching career with the Falcon Family!

Middle School Grading Practices

Beginning in the 2020-21 school year LPS middle schools will be reporting student progress in a new way. We believe it is important to implement equitable grading practices that are based on growth/mastery of essential learning, not behavior/work habits.

Research tells us that grades need to be:

● An accurate reflection of student learning and achievement.   ● Meaningful to students and support their learning.   ● Consistent across teachers, grades and courses.

To achieve the new grading practices, students will receive two grades at the end of each grading period.

● CONTENT GRADE: A content grade represents student demonstration of what a student knows and can do in relation to content standards and/or skills. This grade will be reported on a traditional letter grading scale of A, B, C, D, IE(Insufficient Evidence).

● WORK HABITS GRADE: A work habits grade represents student demonstration of behaviors related to work completion, preparedness for learning, participation, and following classroom expectations. This grade will be reported on a numeric grading scale of :

○ 4 - Demonstrates Consistently ○ 3 - Demonstrates Frequently ○ 2 - Demonstrates Occasionally ○ 1 - Demonstrates Rarely

When students receive feedback and grades specific to learning goals and targets, it will provide them a more accurate measurement of their learning. They gain a greater understanding of skills and knowledge related to areas of strength and areas for improvement. Reporting work habits separate from content grades will also help students understand behaviors that help their learning experiences and behaviors that do not help.

Before school begins in the fall, your school will be communicating more specific information about this new grading practice. You will be provided opportunities to learn more about how grading will be very similar to what past practices have been and how this new reporting process will benefit your child.

Euclid Summer Reading Program In an effort to encourage students to continue to read over the summer, we are pleased to announce our summer reading program. Incoming seventh and eighth graders are required to read two books over the summer and thoughtfully fill out one reading record form (linked here) for each book; they will receive credit in their Language Arts classes at the start of the next school year. Students may choose to read fiction or nonfiction and complete the corresponding reading record. Click on these links for library information and lists of popular titles:

Students can use these sites as suggestions, but are not limited by them. Keep in mind, reading a nonfiction book is one task students can complete on their way to earning their first falcon feather. Please encourage your child to choose books that he/she is excited about reading. Have a great summer. -Euclid Language Arts Department
