GETTING TO KNOW YOU, GETTING TO KNOW ALL ABOUT YOU . . .Or so the song goes. And we DO want to get to know YOU!
Many of you are life long members of FairviewChristian Church. Some of you recently have joined ourcongregation to be fellow members who join us in worshipto God, our father, and our Savior, Jesus Christ. In order toget to know everyone better, we have included a short andsimple questionnaire that we want EVERYONE tocomplete and then return to one of our elders or to thechurch office. This information will be shared via anannouncement screen on Sunday morning so we canconnect a name to the face we see, to get to who we are,
how we came to Fairview, what we do for the Lord and this congregation. We don’t want you to be “just” another face on a pew.
Please complete the questionnaire by Sunday, August 20 andreturn, as stated above, to an elder or to the church office where thesecretary will see that it gets to an elder.
We look forward to getting to know all about you!

PASTOR’S PONDERINGS
General Assembly 2017
Indianapolis saw Disciples once again makinghistory. We can make history for the sake of politicalcorrectness or on behalf of real change for the fullnesswithin the kingdom of God. I have to admit that Iapproached the election of Rev. Teresa Hord Owens withsome cynicism. The bio and picture that had been mailedout had not rang a bell. When I first saw her, I felt instantlymore comfortable realizing that I had indeed met herbefore and had heard her speak before. When presentedto the General Assembly, she answered questionssubmitted by members of the larger church with the heartof a minister not just an academic.
Rev. Hord Owens (also known as Rev. Terry) hasserved as dean of the Chicago Divinity School for the last12 years. She is much beloved by students and membersof her home church, Light of the World Christian Church,in Indianapolis. For several years she also has served asa local pastor in Downers Grove, IL. Before coming to theChicago Divinity School, she served to restructurebusinesses. She indeed has the skills our church needsnow desperately. Many times in her presentation beforethe vote and in her sermon at the close of the GeneralAssembly, she asserted that hers is not a job in isolationbut that it will take all of us to propel our church into thefuture. One of the most moving moments of theAssembly was when the pastor of Light of the World, whowas charged with delivering the installation prayer, calledthe whole of the Assembly forward for the laying on ofhands. We all are a part of Rev. Terry’s ministry to andwith us.
Installation Service OfRev. Teresa Hord Owens
“Rev. Terry”Newest President of the Disciples of Christ
Rev. Hord Owens is the first African Americanwoman to lead our denomination and only the secondwoman. She fully realizes the unique position that placesher in to speak on matters of justice as a minister. Thetheme of this General Assembly was “That we all may beone”. As a graduate of Berea College where our moytocomes directly from scripture “That God has made of oneblood all nations of humanity,” that is always my prayer aswell.
I want to wish Rev. Terry the best as my GeneralMinister and President and covenant with her to do mybest to speak in favor of inclusion of all God’s children andpledging further to keep Rev. Hord Owens in prayer. Weare blest to have a skilled and Christ centered leader likeRev. Terry.
Blessings,
Pastor Curtis

Coffee and the church
An 8-year-old girl who lived two doors away from aretired pastor asked him, "Why do you drink coffee?" Thesurprised pastor answered with a smile, "Because I likethe taste of it and it gets me going in the morning."
That pastor might have been interested in this bitof trivia: In 1592, Pope Clement VIII declared coffee to bea legitimate drink for Christians. Before that edict, it hadbeen labeled "the wine of infidels" because of its popularityamong non-Christians.

Seventy yearsBy the time you’re 70 years old, you will have spent nearlya quarter of a century sleeping. The average personspends about 23 years of his or her life in bed. Here areestimates of how most Americans spend their wakinghours during those 70 years:
• 11 years working• 8 years in leisure pursuits• 6 years eating• 5 years grooming• 4 years being educated• 3 years talking• 2 years reading• 6 months worshiping God
Perhaps Sunday morning worship isn’t as long as itseems.
