The Faculty of Management Placement Students: An Employer’s Guide Benefits for your organisation Placement students constitute a very adaptable and conscientious human resource whose employment will be cost-effective in terms of the amount and quality of work produced. Students bring an innovative approach. Placements often confirm the ability of fresh minds to solve old problems. The students have a good understanding of the business applications of information technology and can make effective and innovative use of computer systems. For any employer interested in graduate recruitment, having a placement student can be seen as offering a realistic probation period during which to assess performance with a view to later permanent employment. A number of students will base their Master’s dissertation on the experience gained at the placement. These have significantly contributed to the company planning process in some instances. Many Master’s students are international, offering an advantage to companies with a culturally diverse clientele. About the placement year

Aims of the placement • Toenablestudentstouseanddevelopthe

• Toprovidethestudentswithinsightstounderpinthedissertationstageofthecourse.

• Toassistthestudentsintheireventualcareerchoices.

Placement work rolesExperiencesuggeststhatourstudentsarecapableoftakingonaverywiderangeofwork;fromoperationaltomanagerialinavarietyofenvironments(hotels,touroperators,eventcompanies,recruitmentsector,financeandmarketingdepartments).Largecompaniesmayoftenhavewell-structuredplacementopportunitiesthatareseenasausefulcomplementtotheirgraduaterecruitmentprogrammes,whilstsmallercompaniescanusetheproblem-solvingversatilityofstudentsasanadditionalmanagementresource.Studentshavesufficientskilllevelsandabasiclevelofknowledgeandunderstandingtobeemployedinanyofthemainbusinessfunctions.Withinareasonabletimeframemoststudentsareabletotakeonasupervisoryorjuniormanagementroleinoperationaldepartments.Studentsalsohavesufficientknowledgeandunderstandingtoenablethemtoworkinsupportingdepartmentssuchasaccounts,marketingandhumanresources.Insomecasesthestudentswillremaininonedepartmentthroughouttheplacement,inotherstheemployer’sprogrammemayallowforperiodsofworktobespentinseveraldepartments.

Criteria for placements• Giventhevarietyofworkrolesstudentscan

undertake,thefollowingsuggestedcriteriamaybehelpful:

• Sometrainingshouldbeinvolvedasappropriateforpotentialmanagementtrainees.

• Thereshouldbethepossibilityofdevelopmentinthelevelofresponsibilityexercisedbythestudentduringtheplacement.

• Theprogrammeshouldbeflexibleenoughtoallowforamixofroutinewithnon-routinetasks.

• Aboveallthereshouldbeanawarenessofthestudent’sabilitytolearnduringtheplacementexperience.

OrganisationStudentsarefreetostarttheirplacementsassoonasallassignmentsforthetaughtpartofthecoursehavebeensubmitted(usuallybeginningofJulyforSeptemberstudentsorendofAugustforFebruarystudents).The30workingweeks(minimum),excludingholidaysandperiodsofsick-leavemustbecompletedbeforestudentsresumetheirstudies.Studentsmustreturntotheuniversityasfull-timestudentsbytheendofMarchforSeptemberstudentsandendofJulyforFebruarystudents.Conditions of employmentWhilstonplacementstudentsaretreatedinthesamewayasothertemporaryemployees.Studentsreceiveasalaryfortheirwork.Salarylevelsarelefttotheemployer’sdiscretionbutshouldrepresenta‘living’wage.

InterviewsItisexpectedthatstudentswillattendinterviewsintheUKtodiscussexactdutiesandconditions.Interviewsmaytakeplacewithinthebusinessorcanbearrangedattheuniversitybyrequest.Oftenatwo-stageinterviewprocessisemployedbycompanies,withthefirststagebeingcompletedoncampus,andasmallershortlisttheninvitedtotheplacementorganisationforthefinalinterview.

Supervision and progress monitoringSupervisionisseenasatripartiteresponsibility–betweenstudent,employerandtheuniversity.Daytodaycontrolofthestudent’sworkandperformanceisinthehandsoftheemployer.Theuniversity,throughateamofPlacementDevelopmentAdvisors,willliaisewiththementor/supervisortoensurethestudentismakingsatisfactoryprogressandisbeingtreatedappropriately.

Assessment of placement yearAreflectionwillbeproducedbythestudentwhentheyreturntotheuniversityfull-time.Thiswillinvolveastudentreflectingonhowtheplacementimpactedonthempersonallyandprofessionally,aswellasontheirfuturecareerchoice.

Code of practiceHospitalityPlacements:theemployerisrequestedtofollowtheCodeofPracticeasagreedbyCHMEandtheHotelEmployersGroupforworkexperience.
