EARLY LIFE

He had a tough time growing up, due to his father’s death.

He decided to take up barbering after moving back to Illinois with his family. He was a barber, like his father.

CHILDHOOD

Dr. Daniel Hale Williams ||| was born on January 18, 1856, in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania to Sarah Price Williams and Daniel Hale Williams ||. The couple had several children, with the elder Daniel H. Williams ||| inheriting a barber business. He also worked with the equal rights league, a black civil rights organization active during the reconstruction era. After his father died, 10-year-old Daniel was sent to live in Baltimore with some family friends. He became a shoemaker’s apprentice. He disliked the work and moved back to his family, who moved to Illinois. Like his father, he took into barbering.

MARRIAGE AND LATER CAREER

Williams left Freedman’s Hospital in 1898. He married Alice Johnson, and the newlyweds moved to Chicago, where Williams returned to his work at Provident.

OPENS FIRST INTERRACIAL HOSPITAL

Williams set up his own practice in Chicago’s Southside and taught anatomy at his alma mater, also becoming the first African-American physician to work for the city’s street railway system.

HOW I CAN RELATE TO THIS PERSON?

Well, I would open an interracial hospital if I could. Stand against racism man.

I believe it would need to change if there were hospitals everywhere declining black staff.
