Inspired has reached its seventh edition, providing an edgy snapshot of the design world. Through the eyes of the cosmopolitan participants at Istituto Marangoni, this issue explores the inspirations of these talented designers showing the Interior, Product and Visual Design projects developed during the three-year and Master’s degree courses. Studying at Istituto Marangoni Milano means being able to work with passionate and professional tutors, developing course projects with prestigious companies, and being surrounded by a vibrant atmosphere. It goes without saying that a strong Italian heritage, excellence in craftsmanship and the Milanese genius logic are strongly intertwined with the teaching approach and daily training. In fact, the School of Design’s programmes also include a 'hands on' approach through visits to showrooms, museums, craft workshops, galleries and leading designer furniture companies. The inspiration that comes from living in a city like

Milan, will do the rest. Not only academic courses, but a unique 'life experience' that drives participants into a full immersion allowing them to better understand and even anticipate the future trends in design and fashion. The course projects with prestigious brands represent an 'educational journey' that combines historic, stylistic and marketing research, leading to the development of mood boards full of suggestions, aimed at expressing and contextualizing the participants’ visions. Moreover, the drawing techniques taught within the school programmes represent a precious tool the participants can use to express their creativity in developing their projects, combing functional solutions with aesthetics, and tradition with innovation. Inspired aims at being a showcase of the results of Istituto Marangoni’s teaching approaches and an inspiration for the future talents in the fields of Interior, Product and Visual Design.

Marangoni offers its talents a true life experience, an immersive journey allowing participants from all over the world to explore and take part in the creation of the future trends of design. Located in one of the most vibrant areas of the city when it comes to events and showrooms, they will get a glimpse of the Milanese reality while studying in a campus that is itself a project of beautiful details and design. They immediately enter in contact with carefully selected pieces of furniture, which decorate the school and represent the best example of the made in Italy design.During their journey, they will develop all the skills that led and still carry the Italian excellence abroad: culture of the project, independence, attention to details and technical skills. Istituto Marangoni Milano Design, keeps a strong connection with the fashion world that would like our participants has been the DNA of the school for almost 80 years. We would like our participants to develop a sensibility to express their emotions and points of view through Product, Interior and Visual design projects, “dressing” not only people but also the life experience.

All the interior spaces inside the villa have been designed targeting a young generation of customers, interested in living new and different experiences. “Ancestral Freshness” takes inspiration from past aesthetics, like Egypt for example, while maintaining a modern and fresh vibe.

sense of roughnessnature touchdouble meaningequilibrium shapestechnologies applied

The participants were required to develop a residential project inspired by the Cappellini villas built in White Bay on the northern coast of Egypt, including an outdoor area, a swimming pool and a terrace. Inspired by the local culture, participants have been asked to decorate the interiors with sustainable coverings and furniture, considering the green village location. The resulting spaces should emanate an international vibe thanks to an accurate choice of materials, production processes, colours and finishes.

Following the “Cappellini” method, the concept was to create a rebirth of the products, mixing traditional and contemporary elements. The roughness of evolving the Egyptian materials is a reminder of the interaction between humans and nature. The natural light effects are recreated using artificial lights inside the villa and the the alternating symmetric and asymmetric shapes give the interior space a rhythm of its own. In order to transform light into a sensorial experience, inspired by the Egyptian sunrise, the project mixes both natural and artificial sources with a touch of colour. The panels are covered with a modern rendition of typical Egyptian patterns. The dialogue between the inside spaces, rough and luxurious but still innovative, communicates harmoniously with the outdoor ones, respecting Cappellini’s elegant aesthetic.

BIOURBANUTOPIA

The Tortona district and its peculiar atmosphere could be described as a bio-urban utopia: this brand new definition goes along with Vibram’s idea of design, allowing us to experience our world with their products despite the soil condition. The idea was to create a connection space between the city with its resilient nature and our need to find ourselves.

resilientundergroundhigh-techImmersiveoasis

Vibram assigned the participants the design of a series of Interior spaces capable to evolve with time and able to adapt to multiple and different situations and requests. Focusing on the transformation of the Vibram Connection Lab in Milano, the brand experience was interpreted through several and delicate interventions to the space mixing together performances, digital technologies, art installations, interactive surfaces, immersive experiences and design exhibitions.

The project proposal is in line with the company’s identity, suggesting the idea of a community space immersed in an industrial environment. The nature of the interiors is flexible and ready to adapt to different events and situations. “Vibram’s Carrarmato”, created in 1937, was the main inspiration for the metallic surface of “Teia Carrarmato”, obtained through laser cutting and harmoniously blending with the architectural structure of the project. The colours are inspired by the brand itself, with a yellow contamination matched with neutral colours in order to suggest calm and balance to the place. The future suggested by Vibram seems optimistic, a world where technology and nature will be able to live together, inviting people to reconnect with their roots.

TACTILEPERCEPTIONS

Melania AssuntaBianco Italy

Blending technology and craftsmanship techniques, Melania Bianco gave emphasis to the emotional and sensorial possibility of surface design with her project “Tactile Perception”. Thanks to her exploration of unusual themes and her reinterpretation of the brand’s identity and history, she created three distinct collections inspired by the texture of the “Slimtech Waterfall” tiles. “Ritmo Inclusivo” combines opaque and sandblasted layers, transforming the surface into a tactile experience. The only disruptive elements of this rhythm are the grouts, which become a decorative element. The result is almost three-dimensional due to the techniques used to erode the surface and the succession of the neutral and delicate colour combination. The main purpose of “Tactile Perception” is to change the client’s idea of walls inside residential or public interiors into a new way of perceiving the space around us, triggering our senses and emotions.

The participants were asked to elaborate a series of innovative design solutions in partnership with Lea Ceramiche. The key elements behind the projects were the current trends in the tile industry and the aesthetic of the brand. Inspired by the “Slimtech Waterfall” tiles, they were also required to describe in detail the technical aspects behind their ideas with the support of handcrafted mock-ups. The result is an exploration of the latest interior trends and possible future directions.

The inspiration for these 70s wall coverings comes from the work of the designer and architect Joe Colombo. Combining his vision and the typical elements behind his projects, such as curvatures, modularity and dynamic parts the geometric elements have been transformed and codified with a personal vision and sensibility in order to elaborate creative brand new design proposals.

70s inspiredJoe Colombogeometricvariabilitymodularity

“Jannelli & Volpi” presented the participants of the Master Surface & Textile course with the creation of a wall covering for their new brand CO.DE Contemporary Design. The company selected three different themes to be developed into a collection including brand new designs and aesthetics: Geometric 70s, Children and Floral. The creative approach and technical processes that led to the creation of the patterns and drawings were different for each proposal.

The shapes of “Combo-tube” alternate micro and macro formats, decorating the wall with an almost “regimental” taste but with a contemporary new twist. The vertical bands are covered with a series of detailed circular shapes of different dimensions, creating a dynamic rhythm. The colour palette is the result of a research and analysis of design patterns from the 70s, applying warm, achromatic and bright tones typical of the decade to the modern client’s vision and style. The patterns are digitally printed on a vinyl base according to the customer request and able to fit both residential and public interiors.

AIR SUNMarco RipaniItaly

The project was inspired by air and, in particular, by its aerodynamic and sculptural properties. Air is the element that surrounds every moment of our lives, entering our bodies through the simple, yet complex, act of breathing. We define and shape this element around us with the simple and rhythmical inhaling and exhaling. With this poetic metaphor of air flowing, the product tries to express an almost “plastic concept” of space, becoming a seat or space divider. These kinds of furniture pieces are never positioned within a room without a purpose but are able to modify the morphology of the interior or outdoor space itself.

Over the past few years, the real estate industry has grown rapidly thanks to the development of urbanization. According to the data collected by Transparency Market Research, the outdoor furniture market is expected to keep growing substantially over the next 5-7 years. In this scenario, the participants were asked to develop a series of outdoor furniture products using a range of materials: wood and synthetic fibres, but also metals and natural fibres.

Considering that a piece of furniture is meant to be used, AIR SUN allows us to develop a spatial relationship with our surroundings, which comes from our physical interaction with it. The way we move our bodies, our gestures or behaviours will refine space itself.

The project is a lamp able to change colour and temperature according to the different situations of the living space, enhancing the communication between the product and its user. The concept behind it takes inspiration from the use of different kinds of light sources in our everyday lives: for example, reading a book will require a different illumination compared to the one necessary to check our personal phones.

colour atmosphereadaptable experiencemoving shapeliving objectsmart elegance

With the merging of the material and digital reality, the world of design has to address two major issues. The first problem is the effect that digital tools have on our cognition and interaction with everyday objects. The second problem concerns the role of physical objects such as chairs, lamps, tables in the age of digitization. Physical objects can find their identity again in the digital era if we give them the chance to repair the negative effects of the excessive use of digital devices.

Product & Furniture Design • Master’s Course

The lamp becomes fluid and ready to adapt to our needs thanks to its sensors, capable of detecting our sleeping habits and sending feedbacks to our phones thanks to its Bluetooth technology. The system processes the acquired information by collecting sounds, for example snoring, and the lamp changes its intensity and temperature accordingly. The shape of the product itself is able to change: the surface, an A4 sized board, is made of a series of triangles attached to each other, which fold according to the client’s taste, allowing for different combinations and light effects.

INTENSEAlan AlpayTurkey

Pearls have a dual identity, both mineral and biological, the result of a fascinating process that is inorganic but comes from a living creature. The purity they are valued for is the result of the contact of an external element with the mollusc, which becomes the host of the pearl - a process called sedimentation. Slowly, the mollusc begins to fold this foreign object with layers of iridescent mother-of-pearl, in order to protect its internal tissues from irritation.

dirty purenessmineral organicglobular pulsingliving preciousnessbreathing jewel

Since ancient times, pearls have always charmed humankind. As a matter of fact, pearls were thought to be the emblem of female creativity and a metaphor for the origin of life. Born from a mollusc, the pearl evolves and grows inside of it, immersed in the mysterious depths of water and biological tissues. A secret and magical world that gives life to new incredible creatures and beautiful objects.

Fine Jewellery Design • Master’s Course

Pearls, and the process that leads to their creation, could be considered a paradox since their own existence comes from something dirty and casual. The “Intense” collection starts from these contradictions and translates them into a series of pieces with soft and rounded shapes. Each jewel appears almost organic and made of globular groups of pearls, precious and pure spheres clumped together in grapples. Everything maintains a pulsing, but still elegant, mineral appearance thanks to the touch of blue.

Pintu is a self-driving vehicle with the purpose of preventing the loss of face-to-face communication and intimacy between people in the future, when the Internet and technology will have reached such advanced levels that users will no longer need any kind of human interaction. Driverless cars could provide an unexpected solution to the problem, allowing people not to keep their eyes necessarily on the road and their eyes on the road and their hands on the steering wheel during the driving experience. Pintu consists of a self-driving module owned by an individual user that can be jointed with others of the same kind in different combinations, allowing social interaction between the clients during the journey and transforming it into a relaxing experience similar to the one we might have in a coffee shop. People can have a conversation, read, have a coffee or a drink while going to work or out with friends for the night. Each module can be customized, allowing the client to decorate and furnish as they like.

The Generation Z has nowadays outclassed the Millennials, who grew up used to the Internet and its evolution, while the second has always lived in contact with digital applications. Their way to relate to their surroundings is open, connected, creative but also fragmented. They live in a world where the material reality is losing its importance in favour of a growing technology. This requires a project methodology focused on the quality of the experiences rather than on stable solutions.

People who are used to travelling often forget their place of origin, living their identity through the cultures they have encountered during their journey. Moving around makes us resilient and teaches us how to adapt to new places quickly. Inspired by the concepts of diversity, inclusivity and adaptability, the project wants to explore the way we change our personality and perception of the world based on what we have experienced and whom we have met.

Nowadays, the way we perceive our homes has become incredibly fluid: not a simple sequence of rooms but a smooth experience that allows us to appreciate all the different areas of the living space. This contemporary and popular trend reflects a general evolution in the way we enjoy the domestic dimension. The objective of the project is to design a bathroom or lighting product in line with the current trends: the bathroom becomes more than a simple service room, acquiring an identity of its own and becoming incredibly important in our homes.

Las is a lamp inspired by the curved shapes of the trees in a forest in the North-West of Poland. Made entirely of ceramic, Las is a pendant-type lamp, making it easy to adjust to the client personal taste. The product comes with a 3m suspension wire in order to fit different heights and rooms and with a neutral selection of colours. The lamp can be a single element or have multiple pendants hanging together with different lengths. The light source is an OLED strip that follows the shape of the product.

The product takes inspiration from a picture taken in Huangfu that shows a group of people during the four traditional steps of bathing in ancient China. The ritual begins with someone playing soothing music to better appreciate the experience about to begin. During the second step, a massage to relax both the body and the mind is performed. Then, cream is applied all over it to maintain the skin soft. During the fourth and final passage, people finally immerse themselves in water. Ancient cultures considered bathing not only as a way to clean the impurities of the body but also as a process able to cleanse the mind and the soul.

This ritual could last two hours before being completed, combining the practical aspects of washing ourselves with a mundane ritual of purification. By contrast, nowadays it takes no more than twenty minutes to take a shower, a process we try to complete as soon as possible. The project invites the clients to experience calm and relax, encouraging them to take their time to wash their bodies as well as their minds.

Balenciaga brandmuseum tech-industriesdystopia post-internet architecture

The degree project of this year required the participants to develop the conversion of an industrial space into a showroom of one of the assigned brands: Valentino, Balenciaga and Missoni. The re-interpretation of the brand’s aesthetics and the participants’ ability to translate their ideas into the interior space was the main goal of the project. All the developed interiors were conceived as museums, exhibition and fashion spaces able to host various kinds of events during the design week.

Everyone is familiar with the unfortunate “404 Error” notification appearing randomly on our computer screens: the http 404, or server not found, is a common error in the hypertext response code in the computer network communications. The project is inspired by the subversive vision of the fashion designer Demna Gvsalia, creative director of Balenciaga. Demna is probably the first fashion designer that truly understands the internet culture, managing to tranlsate the Gen-Z language and showcase it on the runway.

As a response nature will re-gain its position on earth as an inminent truth, “a second chance.”

The participants of the third year of Interior Design were tasked by Flaminia to create a bathroom space, taking inspiration from the collections of the brand and creating contemporary interior projects in line with the company’s vision. They elaborated new concepts maintaining Flaminia’s identity and aesthetic, adding their personal touch. These ideas allow the clients to approach the bathroom space with a new sensibility and were developed for both residential or hotel suite interiors.

The concept behind “Lost in Dream”, a bathroom interior located in Ireland, was born form the analysis of how important this specific room has become for all of us. The idea is to escape the stress and frenzy of our everyday lives to find a resting place for our bodies and minds at the end of the day. The space is unusual yet familiar and the interior reminds of an Irish fairy tale with its eerie and ethereal atmosphere. Since the client requested the presence of natural elements, the project took inspiration also from the paintings of John Everett Millais, famous for his beautiful landscapes.

The colour palette is soft and relaxing with an almost dusty effect. The materials used for the panelling, like earthen, are matched with wallpapers representing nature. The projects selected by Flaminia express the idea of a versatile design typical of the brand, with light shapes made out of tiny layers of ceramic that give the interior space an aura of innovative elegance.

HATE WEEKRachele GuariniItaly

“Hate Week” was born form an extensive research about the iGeneration, focusing in particular on the cyber-bullying phenomenon. Considering the importance of social media in our society, it doesn’t come as surprise how this has become a frequent issue among the younger generations. Despite some attempts to contain it, such as the Ferrara Law and its #cyberesistance campaign, FARE X BENE Onlus and the #Iwillnotbedeleted

The Generation Z has nowadays outclassed the Millennials, who grew up used to the Internet and its evolution, while the second has always lived in contact with digital applications. Their way to relate to their surroundings is open, connected, creative but also fragmented. They live in a world where the material reality is losing in favour of a growing technology. This requires a project methodology focused on the quality of the experiences rather than on stable solutions.

global campaign launched by Rimmel make-up, cyberbullying is still an underestimated issue.“Hate Week” wants to raise the public awareness about the topic in a completely new and provocative way, inspired by the feeling of hatred and its consequences. The concept of the project imagines a dystopic week of international hate, where the public is forced to experience the power of the message behind the project and reflect on their use of social media. “Hate Week” uses different ways of communicating with the audience through a series of light installations involving various monuments and buildings around the globe and billboards hung in areas of visibility such as underground stations.

The project takes inspiration from Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland”, adapting the original story and its metaphors to a new narration. Elements from the original splot were expressly deleted or changed, creating a new plot that tries to explain the Generation Z point of view and the way they perceive the digital reality surrounding them. Alice in Wonderland shows an incredible number of similarities with our technologically addicted society and since the story is so well known, it was easy to approach it as a creative starting point that could easily resonate with the audience.

The project is a tribute and celebration of this generation in the form of a digital art work, hoping they will be able reflect on themselves and the reality they live in. A way, perhaps, to fight against their own doubts and fears and grow the courage to evolve and move forward in the real world.

This hardworking piece of furniture features two touch buttons on the top marble surface, allowing the client to easily and quickly adjust the table without efforts. The self-locking hinges are meant to extend or reduce the surface of the product or to raise its side walls, satisfying every kind of need and situation. It is a piece of furniture suitable to every hour and event during the day, able to blossom during daytime or close its petals at night time, just like a beautiful flower. A series of hidden wheels allow for easy transportation around the space and, thanks to its flexibility, it can be used as a bedside table or coffee table as well as a stand for computers. The combination of two different materials, wood and marble, gives X-Cube an elegant and modern look, in line with the technology hidden from sight, which is visible only when the charging jack blinks in case of low battery.

The contest involved interdisciplinary groups of participants in the Visual, Product and Interior Design courses who were asked to present a creative idea capable of making the physical borders and innovative character of the district visible. Over a period of two months, participants worked on developing their projects, which were then presented in front of a jury of industry experts.

The goal of the project is to reframe the IDD identity translating, interpreting and communicating the essence of the district through small architectural sculptures that become physical iconic signs distributed all around area and highlight strategic nodes of connectivity. The forms of the individual hubs are simple 3-dimensional abstract shapes that trace and mimic the forms of the architecture of the district. The results of this idea is the creation of The Innovative Hub , a big led tubes structure that is going to be placed in the Library of Trees. The project also uses lighting effects inside the m5 metro line, between Zara and Monumentale stations. Moving forward, using the light effects like light arches, wires or light projection, the traveller has the impression of travelling into the future.
