The Estill County Tribune, June 6, 2018, Page 7 Watch And Pray? by BOB CASEY, preacher Cornerstone Church of Christ 70 Bond Street at Camp Avenue in West Irvine In Mark 13:31-33 is recorded there teachings of Jesus, “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.” The word “watch” is used in three sentences in the Bible: 1) To watch, in order to be on guard, 2) To watch, meaning to look for, and 3) To watch in the night time. Some of the points in this text reveals clearly that this earth as we know it shall have its end. In 2 Peter 3:10-11, it is declared, “The Day of the Lord,” that “will come as a thief in the night.” In the which, the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, big bang, and the elements shall melt with the fervent heat. The earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Then Peter admonishes all of us, saying, “Seeing then that all these things shall be dis- solved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation (action) and godliness.” I encourage all of our readers to read all of Chap- ter 3 for it is a very alarming text. So, we are admonished to be on guard, to look for, because it may happen when we are not pre- pared for it, hence, the thief in the night. One of the ways that we can be prepared is to be on guard for our own souls. On the Day of Pentecost, recorded in Acts 2:40, after Peter has preached that great story, about 3,000 requested by asking, “What shall we do?” Peter gave them this message, saying, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall re- ceive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” (Acts 2:38) Called in Ephesians 1:12-14, “the gospel of your salvation.” “And with many other words did he testify and ex - hort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward gen- eration.” (Acts 2:40) I ask, how was this possible? Verse 41 gives the answer, “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.” So, then, in this manner they so acted in obe- dience so that they helped themselves. Some have a different opinion concerning this, but their opinions can never dissolve this Holy Word. Hebrews 13:8, says, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” So, our Lord hasn’t changed his mind con- cerning how men are truly saved; so, if you have not obeyed the Lord, then you are not saved. So, who’s fault is it? This much I know for 101%, that only the ones who hear, believe, obey the words of Jesus will go to heaven if they remain faithful unto death. Hebrews 5:8-9 clearly states that Jesus “became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.” So, in closing, let me say this clearly, with the greatest concern. If you are not on guard, watching for your soul, you may very well lose it by failing to obey the terms offered by the Lord. So, we stand ready to teach you the truth. Attend with us this very next Lord’s day. For no one knows when his coming will be. Sincerely, Bob Casey, (1-859-369-4165), local “Brother,” said St. Francis of Assisi to a young monk who had just entered the monas- tery, “let’s go to town and preach.” They left the monastery and walked to the town and did not say a word to each other or the people they passed in the marketplace. After several hours they re- traced their steps and re- turned to the monastery. The young monk wondered what was go- ing on and after waiting for what seemed like an eternity he finally broke his silence and asked, “I thought we were going to town to preach. When are we going to preach?” “We have been preaching,” replied St. Francis. “As we walked, we were observed: peo- ple watched our man- ners, our faces, our be- havior, and our clothes, what people thought we stood for. We have been preaching.” All of us preach all of the time. Our behavior is our message and our places of interest our pul- pits. Our lives become lectures and our pursuits are examples of our pri- orities. People watch us even as we watch them. And each time we pass from view and our words can no longer be heard our sermon ends and a decision about the value and importance we place on being like Christ in all we do and whatever we say is made. The problem we face today is not the quantity of Christians but the qual- ity. And if we want to win more, we must be more. How different would the world be if when we “de- clared God’s glory,” we also lived God’s glory. How we live is more im- portant than words. No matter how small it seems, it’s in our power to decide which way or things we choose. Believe me, I’ve made a lot of choices and wished that I had made the other choice instead. But, too late . . . I have to keep my choice. When I first came to church with my young daugh- ter, I got to witness God’s healing power on site. My daughter always had a problem with poison ivy and poison oak. Anything of that nature that she came in the vicinity of, she would break out almost immediately. I mean, just passing by it, not even in contact with it, she literally would swell up and break out so badly, and it would head straight for her eyes. Which meant doc- tor time and in hurry! However, this service time, my daughter had already come in contact with poison ivy, right before service time. So, we went into church, none the wiser. As church started I noticed that in that short time period, her eyes had already almost swelled to- gether. As people gathered around for prayer, my little girl got prayed for and instantly the red swelling started going down, around her eyes, neck and arms. By the time church was dismissed, she had her eyes complete- ly cleared up with the swelling gone. I am sure she was glad she made the choice to get prayed for. Joshua 24:15 - “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” It’s our choice to serve the Lord or follow after our on will and ways. If the choice we make is right, we can rejoice in it. If the choice is wrong, we will have to suffer through what- ever the results may be. Psalms 119:30 - I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me.” I choose this Word of God, as my choice. Luke 13:27 - “But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; de- part from me, all ye workers of iniquity.” Backyard Bible Club will be held , Monday-Wednesday, June 11-13, 2018 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church, 4470 Spout Springs Road in Irvine, for children in preschool through sixth grade.
