Young Living Spring Planting a Time for Revitalization

page 1

I spent much of February trav-eling across the United States spreading a message I believe in deeply: Young Living offers tools and products for those who choose to be transformed.

Hearing this powerful message, our wonderful distributors packed meeting rooms in Idaho, Colorado, California, Oklahoma, and New York to be introduced to one of the most exciting and beneficial campaigns Young Living has ever unleashed—the Slique™ Experience. This life-changing program is geared to lead all participants to wellness, purpose, abundance, and vitality or, in short, to a transformed life.

Imagine a life elevated by these four virtues! Imagine the good you could do, the inspiration to others you could become. That is what life with Young Living is all about. The choice is yours.

As we move forward with the Slique Experience, some indi-viduals will lose sight of what this campaign is all about. To be clear, this campaign is not about weight loss. Weight loss is simply the measuring tool we use to calculate the healthy changes that will take place within your body and mind. What the Slique Experience is all about is making a choice to be changed, to trans-form your life, and to accept what Young Living can offer.

I have never been more anxious to see the life-enhancing results that I know will occur as you live the Slique Experience. Take advantage of this amazing oppor-tunity that is before you. As you do, I promise you will look back with gratitude for the real and lasting changes that have come into your life.

Choose to be transformed.

Essentially yours,

Every spring, distributors and volunteers converge on Young Living’s farms to seed and plant lavender and melissa. This year, participants will be planting a variety of trees and plants at St. Maries and Highland Flats farms, Whispering Springs in Mona, Utah, and the lavender farm in France.

Founder’s Message

pring has long been revered as a season of awakening and renewing. Rising from winter’s bitter days are blos-soms and colors spurred to

life by the sun’s warmth. Spring is the season of refreshment, regeneration, and transformation.

Drawing on the season’s spirit of revitalization, Young Living will return to its roots with a truly international spring planting event, beginning in the Intermountain West in April and spanning into the beautiful, enchanting French countryside during May.

“The spring planting season is an opportunity for us to reengage with nature and realize the importance of planting trees and plants to replace those we harvest and distill every year,” says Cory Weaver, Young Living’s vice president of global farm operations.

This year will present new challenges and experiences that have not been available for several years, as Young Living’s aggressive farm vision is lead-ing to the great acreage expansion at the Young Living Essential Oil Farms in Mona, Utah; St. Maries and Naples, Idaho; and Simiane-la-Rotonde, France.

The expansion in Utah will include 35 acres of lavender, 60 acres of peppermint, and 10 acres of oregano. Distributors who volunteer in Idaho will be planting more than 60 acres of

lavender, melissa, and tansy—as well as more than 25,000 balsam fir, Western red cedar, and Douglas fir trees.

“Our distributors will be able to come and participate in nature’s regeneration,” says Cory. “Hopefully, they will also see the parallel to their own lives and see that it is time to reenergize themselves. People, like plants, lie dormant during the winter, so this will be a great opportunity for them to get themselves reengaged with their own well-being.”

There may not be a better place for Young Living distributors to spend a few weeks in May than in France. Although the lavender died off a few years ago in the region from where all of Young Living’s lavender seeds origi-nate, the soil and time is now right for 10 acres of new lavender plants to dot the hillside.

“The planting season allows distrib-utors to get involved at the beginning of the Seed to Seal® process,” explains Cory. “They will actually be planting the seedlings; then in two to three years, the plants will be ready to harvest. It is a great experience to watch the expansion and see what we’re doing to meet the needs of Young Living.”

Simiane-la-Rotonde, FranceThe planting season for the new lavender will begin in May, pre-paring the way for the farm’s 20th anniversary celebration July 5–7. A new structure is also being built to house the farm office.

Guayaquil, EcuadorThe clinic is complete and has been moved to the Finca Botanica farm. The region is currently in the rainy season, which allows farm workers to continue ylang ylang production.

Mona, UtahThe Whispering Springs farm in Mona will planting lavender, orega-no, and 60 acres of peppermint this spring and summer.

St. Maries, IdahoThe Winter Harvest was a great success. Farm workers and volun-teers distilled more than 200 gallons of pine and nearly 300 gallons of blue spruce essential oils. The farm staff is now chipping and distilling Western red cedar trees.

Spring planting events will be held during the first week of April. Staff and volunteers will plant laven-der, melissa, and tansy, along with 25,000 balsam fir, Western red cedar, and Douglas fir trees.

Naples, IdahoVolunteers cut, chipped, and distilled more than 45 acres of trees at the Highland Flats tree farm in January. The ground is currently being prepared for April’s spring planting of 40,000 Douglas fir, Western red cedar, balsam fir, and blue spruce trees.

Distributor Spotlight

Young Living’s Harvest Hall of Fame

or many distributors, participating in a Young Living harvest is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that yields a lifetime of memories.

But for a dedicated few, the cold Jan-uarys and warm Augusts are annual beckoning calls to live the Seed to Seal® experience and display attitudes of gratitude for the privileges afforded by Young Living.

For Eldon Knittle, Chip Kouwe, Jim Powell, Kathy and Dave Gardner, and Cheri Ross, each harvest—and there have been many—has been an opportunity to give whatever, however they can.

Eldon Knittle admits he has lost count of the number of harvests he has worked. He does remember that he has harvested at the Young Living farms in France, Ecuador, Utah, and Idaho. Trying to remember how many years it has been, he pulls Gary Young aside and, after a laborious review, they decide that 2012 marks 13 years that Eldon has been involved in the harvests.

“If it has wheels and tracks, I like to

operate it as much as I can; that’s why I keep coming back,” Eldon jokes.

He reminisces for a moment on those 13 years and focuses on one thing: his wife. Without Nancy, who he describes as lovely, wonderful, and beautiful, Eldon says it would have been impossible to do what he has done and will continue to do.

“Doing all the harvests, for me, is more than paying back Young Living or paying it forward; it is from my heart,” he says. “I just have such great respect for Gary and Mary, and I want to do what I can to support them and Young Living.”

Among those who regularly participate in harvests, happily giving their time and efforts to a company that offers so much is a recurring theme.

“I like to give back,” says Chip Kouwe, a Diamond distributor who

has spent portions of three winters and four summers at the St. Maries farm. “Young Living has been so good to my wife and me, and I just want to give back.”

Jim Powell recently completed his fourth Winter Harvest after working the excavator at the Highland Flats farm for four weeks. While gratitude is the driving motivator behind his volunteer efforts, Jim sees the oppor-tunity to work with the machinery and play a role in producing the oils as the icing on the cake.

“I do this out of gratitude and to give back, because the lifestyle I enjoy that is provided by Young Living gives me the freedom to spend my time as I choose,” he says. “They have found a niche up here for me with the excavator, and I am just glad to help.”

Sharing the Young Living message

and learning the Young Living way is what participating in the harvests is all about. No one has shared that message more than distributor Cheri Ross, who has either brought or spon-sored more people to the summer and winter harvests than any oth-er distributor. Because of Cheri, her Young Living family tree is growing, abundant with people who know and appreciate what it takes to produce the world’s best essential oils.

For some, like Kathy Gardner and her husband, Dave, just being out in nature producing oils is reason enough to attend the harvests. The distributor couple from Ohio volun-teered to work all four weeks of this year’s Winter Harvest, their fourth. They know they will be back for more harvests, if there is any way possible.

“It’s like going to heaven once a year,” says Kathy. “We love the harvests, we love the amazing people who come, and it’s just indescribable to be part of making the oil.”

Transforming the Young Living Farms

As we continue with modern-ization projects and the transfor-mation of the Young Living Farms, we have implemented some name changes and clarifications.

The formal name for all of the farms will now be Young Living

Essential Oil Farms, citing Adven-ture, Discovery, and Tourism in each of the farm banners and logos, reflecting what the farms best repre-sent for Young Living.

The formal name for the Utah farm, also known as the Mona farm, the Mona Lavender farm, the Utah lavender farm, and sometimes the Whispering Springs farm, will now be the Whispering Springs Farm located in Mona, Utah. You will notice the implementation of the official name throughout this issue of the Essential Edge.

A Note on Young Living Reducing the Use of Rosewood OilAt Young Living we are committed to being responsible stewards of the environment and taking great care to preserve and protect our natural resources. These core values are demonstrated by our Seed to Seal philosophy, which promotes sustainable farming and sourcing practices, while enabling us to produce the purest, most potent essential oils in the world.

Occasionally, we learn of resources that are under stress from over-harvesting or industry exploitation. Over the past few years, we have become increasingly concerned about the health and population of Brazilian rosewood trees. These beautiful trees are under tremendous strain due to unscrupulous suppliers that illegally harvest and sell the wood for use in furniture, musical instruments, flooring, and other decorative items. In our efforts to be responsible corporate citizens and to lessen global rosewood demand, we are taking steps to remove or reduce rosewood oil in our oil blends and personal care products.

We will replace rosewood in these products with a new, proprietary blend of coriander, furanocoumarin-free bergamot, ylang ylang, and geranium. This unique combination closely matches the distinctive rosewood aroma and offers a similar chemical profile.

Rosewood has a lovely, woody floral scent and is high in linalol, a chemical constituent with antibacterial and antiviral properties. Its fragrance offers empowering and emotionally stabilizing benefits. Great care was taken to formulate the replacement blend with the same characteristics. Coriander was added to the blend because of its uniquely high levels of linalol. In addition, the blend includes furanocoumarin-free bergamot, also high in linalol, and specially distilled to remove photosensitivity properties.

We are confident that the fragrance and function of the reformulated products will be equal or superior to what you have come to expect. The products affected include:

Only the products listed above will be affected by these changes. We do not anticipate a need to reformulate other products but will continue to monitor the health and supply of rosewood and make adjustments if necessary. The reformulation of these products is further evidence of Young Living’s leadership role in the industry as we set the standard for ecologically friendly business practices that enhance and sustain our natural resources.
