Brothers and Sisters of Local 80, Are you having a heart attack? I was. Do you have a burning sensation across your chest?
A feeling of impending doom? Are you fatigued easily? No pain down your left arm, but your neck aches, feeling lightheaded?
September 2, 2016, the air is thick with smoke, the heat oppressive. I'm having trouble breathing; the air quality index is off the charts. Just walking outside and back is exhausting. My neck hurts, but this is not unusual to many injuries.
I call Dave Sharlein. He gives me a ride to the E.R.: oxygen, EKG, draw some blood, chest x-ray. Blood pressure is 150/100.
I'm told they are going to transport me to Bakersfield Heart Hospital. Once there an MRI and a heart sonogram confirm that I have at least two clogged arteries.
September 3, I meet the cardiologist, and I’m told as soon as I'm stable he is going to perform an angioplasty: twilight sleep, insert a balloon to widen the arteries.
September 4, I wake up to meet the hospital
cardiovascular surgeon; my arteries are too clogged. One is 70%, the other 80%, and they can't really see, but it appears a third is 100%. I need a triple bypass!
September 5, the surgical team saws my chest open. They pull a vein from my leg, another from my chest. I have a tube down my throat. The surgery is a success.
September 8, I'm released. It will be awhile before I can drive. I can't lift over 5 lbs. I have a teddy bear (Sir Koff-a-lot) used to keep me from pulling the surgical wire through my sternum before it heals 6 to ten weeks. My diet is undergoing big changes; low sodium, low fat.
Can you avoid this? Yes. Go to the American Heart Association website follow the links for diet. Exercise regularly, quit smoking. Talk with your doctor, express your concern about that pain over your heart; possibly it's not heart burn.
By the way, a chest x-ray will not show clogged arteries; only a heart sonogram can do this accurately. If you have concerns, if your family has a history of heart disease, talk to your doctor.

Work has picked up quite dramatically, and it
seems that it will stay that way for most of the balance
of the year.
If you are not working, but want to, be sure to call
at least once each week to make sure that your name is
on the appropriate available list.
Ask the call steward what telephone or cell phone
numbers they have for you. Ask what skills are listed
for you, and have any that are no longer valid removed
(we can't all continue to work up high, or do layout
board, or put up steel deck forever).
When every Local 80 member who is available
to work has themselves listed at the callboard, when
every member who is listed as available actually is
available, when every member troubles themselves to
make certain that their contact numbers are current, and
when every member has their correct skills and job
preferences listed, calls can be filled quickly and
efficiently.
When calls for work can be filled quickly and
efficiently, there is little chance that more off-Roster
workers will gain days towards membership than there
are jobs to support members.
That is the way that the callboard is intended to
work, it is the way that our call stewards would like it
to work, and it is the way that it would be the most
beneficial to our Local's members to have it work.
Please do your best to not be one of the members
who keep it from working that way.
The Holiday season somehow manages, or so it
seems, to begin a bit earlier each year, bringing with it
the temptation to pour more money than you should
really be spending into gifts that are likely to be more
expensive than they really should be.
Holiday decorations started appearing in stores
before the end of September, and there are already
companies running Holiday Sale ads (most of which
seem to be designed quite specifically to make you feel
as guilty as they possibly can for not maxing out every
last one of your credit cards, as well as taking out a
home equity line of credit so that all of your children
and grandchildren can enjoy the latest soon-to-be-
forgotten video game or smart phone app.)
Don’t let yourself be sucked into that financial
morass: getting back out of it can easily consume all of
the time and emotional energy that you should have
been investing in the very people that working to pay
off excessive debt keeps you away from.
It is not the money that you have paid for a gift
that makes it something that will be treasured; it’s the
gift’s least obvious quality. Least obvious, that is, to an
outside observer,
The quality that makes gifts valuable to the
recipient is clearly visible to the recipient, and is nearly
always the direct result of the personal consideration
that goes into them, and the emotional content of the
memories associated with them: the stuffed animal that
you buy for your child that reminds them of a happy
day spent with you at the zoo will be treasured long
after the most expensive new video game is forgotten.
Going out on a financial limb to buy gifts will
almost inevitably prove to have been counterproductive
in the long run. What your loved ones need more than
anything else from you is your time and emotional
investment. If you are worrying about how you are
going to pay your bills when you are with them,
because you spent more than you could really afford on
gifts, they might not know exactly what is wrong, but
they will know something is. Worse yet, they will pick
up on the fact that it has something to do with them.
If you are working to pay off bills for expensive
gifts instead of spending time with your kids, what they
understand is not that you are working because you
love them, but that money is more important to you
than they are. If you are lucky, they might realize their
mistake by the time their own kids are the age you are
now.
Your wife or husband will probably be able to
understand in an intellectual way why you aren’t
spending more time with them, but the emotional
burden can still crush the life out of a marriage.
The most meaningful gifts that you could possibly
give to your children, your spouse, or to anyone that
you love, are your time and attention, spent doing
something that they, and you, find meaningful. It’s a
gift that you will never be able to afford to give if you
are spending that time working to pay for expensive but
meaningless toys.
