When Queen Victoria died in 1901 her son succeeded to the throne. The attitude of the age still survived even if the era of Queen Victoria was finished. EDWARD VII came to the throne (1901-1910). He did not political changes until 1906, when after the elections the liberal party restored the majority. During the Edwardian age were taken legislative measures to improve the situation of England; these measures brought to the industrialization, to the growth of urban areas, to the increase of population and the extension of the transports. 1906: Trade dispute Act protected Trade Unions against industrial disputes 1907: introduction of medical service in schools 1908: invalid and old age pension act; Coals mines regulation act (work for 8 hours) 1911: national insurance act insurance against illness and unemployment; Parliament Act possibility for Lords to reject a finance bill and restricts their veto on other bills to a max of two years. This act was approved because a Lord proposed to put fees on the income that did not come from work (ie. Rent…) Even if it was a period full of measures, there were still strikes, violence and industrial unrest. Some of these people were French syndicalists, someone other thought that the only way to move the state to do something was using strikes against the increasing prices. Women wanted the right to vote, but because of the fact that they used violence, they were not good-seen. GEORGE V came to the throne after Edward VII (1910-1913). It was the British counterpart of “Belle Époque” , but Victorian habits still survived and the upper class still thought of itself as the centre of the civilized world. This all ended after the 1 st World War. EDWARD VIII (1936) and GEORGE VI (1936-1952).
