Since its formation in January 2009 as an inde-
pendent local community resuscitation charity, East Neuk First Responders have achieved a
great deal with the support of the local com-
munity. Entirely self-funding, they initially
raised thousands of pounds to purchase kit
bags, training equipment and a dedicated vehi-cle which has allowed them to respond to al-
most one thousand 999 emergency calls to
date.
Three years ago they launched their Public Ac-
cess Defibrillator (PAD) campaign, and with huge community support have now installed
36 of these lifesaving machines in the East
Neuk. Over 1000 local people and school pupils
have attended defibrillator awareness training
and the group were delighted when in January this year one of their PADs was used to save the
life of a Crail lady.
In addition to the defibrillator and First Aid
training they have offered Heart Health, blood pressure checks, health awareness events and
also undertake First Aid event cover at local
events. Their work has made a great deal of
difference to many people and given those
living, working or visiting the East Neuk of Fife the best possible chance of survival should they
suffer a life threatening emergency.
They now need to recruit more volunteers to
help with this work, if you are interested in be-
coming a First Responder, a First Aider, a First Aid Instructor or work in a support role they
would like to hear from you.

You don’t have to live in a 250-year-old house to enjoy the
timeless elegance of Georgian
style. Refined and uncluttered, its symmetry, proportion and
classicism looks good in all
kinds of homes, says Katherine
Sorrell
Did you know it was the
Georgians who made us
modern? During the century or so following the ascent of
George I in 1714, our towns and
cities, and homes and gardens, were transformed and the
inexorable rise of popular
culture began. Perhaps it is part
of a trend away from pared-down minimalism in favour of
bolder colours, decorative
surfaces and more intricate shapes, or perhaps it is simply
the appeal of classic elegance –
either way, it is not surprising that we find Georgian life and
times, and especially its
architecture and interiors,
fascinating.
But what was Georgian style?
According to V&A curator Julius
Bryant: ‘The prevailing mood of the period is one of classical
revival, of symmetry, order,
balance, space and calm – in contrast to Victorian clutter. The
centrepiece of a room would be
a fireplace with a prominent
mantelpiece, and then lovely floorboards, Turkish rugs, and
furniture made from walnut and
mahogany, with carved edges,
stable and strong.’
This was, of course, the age of
the master cabinet-maker:
famous names such as Thomas Chippendale and George
Hepplewhite. The general
preference was for fine, small,
light pieces made from rich woods, often featuring
decorative gilding, marquetry
or lacquer. If you can’t afford Georgian antiques, look for
Victorian or Edwardian replicas.
As for fabrics, cottons and linens became extremely
popular and a host of beautiful
printed and woven patterns
appeared, many of which are still available, including chintzes
featuring large, bright florals,
bold stripes, Chinese scenes and the monochrome images of
toile de Jouy. On walls, either
wood panelling or block-printed wallpaper would be
perfect, or paint colours from
the many historic ranges on
offer today. Georgian ‘common’ colours included off-white,
stone, grey, cream and a wide
range of earthy tones. Generally speaking, the stronger the
colour, the more expensive it
was to produce, so some people added touches of pea
green, olive, lemon or pale blue,
while the very well off
employed brighter shades such as pink, orange, straw, deep
green, ultramarine and Prussian
blue.
At the start of the Georgian era homes were very poorly lit, but
by the turn of the century gas
and oil lighting was the latest thing for those who could
afford it, though candles were
still the norm for most. This
meant that decorative light fittings became fashionable.
Period lighting can be tricky to
get right; either seek out good reproductions or stick to simply,
timeless modern fittings that
won’t clash with other pieces.
In many older homes, panelled-
wood shutters look just right at
the windows, but otherwise
simple curtains made from a suitable fabric work well. The
later part of the Georgian
period saw the introduction of French rod curtains that drew
horizontally – the forerunners
of our modern curtains.
Last of all, to really get things
right, add one or two typical
finishing touches such as
classical busts or statues, romantic porcelain figures,
lacquerwork screens, rococo
silver and Wedgwood ceramics. And ensure that your rooms are
arranged with an emphasis on
order and symmetry. You will no doubt appreciate how this
gracious and tasteful style has
become an essential element in
our interior vocabulary.

BeautyBeauty
and the Beach
Whether you’re planning a staycation, or a round
the world trip, camping or a five-star hotel stay, read on for our pick of summer beauty essentials.
For many of us, slapping on foundation is the last
thing we fancy doing on a summer’s day. But if
you still want some coverage, try a Blemish Balm
(BB). Similar to a tinted moisturiser,
but with added benefits, a
BB cream hydrates and
primes your skin, while
helping to even out your
complexion. Pacifica Alight
Multi Mineral BB Cream is a
steal at just £16.99 from
www.naturisimo.com. It’s
perfect for creating that
fresh-faced glow.
Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Bricks are a bit of a cult
favourite, and the new Brightening Bricks (£34)
look set to become just as popular. You use them
in much the same way as you would a blusher,
but the multi-tones help to avoid ‘Aunt Sally’
cheeks, and make for a far more natural, youthful
effect. These have been designed to lock
moisture into the skin, while absorbing oil to keep
shine at bay. Choose from six shades, including
coral (pictured top of page).
You need to protect your skin from the sun
all year around, but it’s even more vital in
the warmer months. If you suffer from
eczema, psoriasis or other skin complaints,
you may want to opt for a natural sunscreen,
that’s less likely to irritate your skin. Neal’s
Yard Remedies Chamomile & Aloe Vera
Moisturising Sun Lotion gets our vote. It’s 100%
natural, has an SPF of 25, and offers both UVA and
UVB protection. Usually, it’s best to buy a separate
facial sun cream, as most body creams are quite
greasy, leading to spots and skin irritation.
However, this lotion is gentle enough to be used
all over, and is packed with nourishing
ingredients, such as shea and coconut oils.
Ah the joys of trying to fit all of your make-up and
toiletries into your suitcase. Travel sized versions
of your favourite toiletries can be much more
expensive, per millilitre, than their big sisters. A
cheaper option is to invest in some refillable
bottles. Do make sure that at least some of them
are under 100ml, if you want to keep them in your
hand luggage when flying. Some sets even come
complete with a see through bag, so there’s no
faffing around for a plastic
bag at the airport check-in.
We like The Body Shop’s
Travel Kit, £7, which has
three bottles, two jars and a
handy spatula.
Miniatures are, however, a great way to try new
skincare ranges without forking out for a full sized
product that might not suit your skin. If
you’re looking to treat yourself to a new
travel washbag to house all your new
goodies, we’re lusting after the Orla Kiely
Large Washbag in Floating Flower, which
has three separate compartments and a hook
to hang it up. Treat yourself for £32 at
www.Cuckooland.com.

There is something lovely
about this part of the summer.
The veg plot tends to be in
overdrive and there are some
delicious fruits cropping too.
But sometimes your beloved
flower beds and borders, pots
and planters can be looking
ever-so-slightly sorry for
themselves. There is often a
distinct mid-summer-flop. You
planted up your flower beds
and numerous pots and
containers to make them look
good but how can you keep
them looking on top form for as
long as possible?
Regular feeding is essential,
particularly for anything
growing in a container. Often
crammed into a fairly small
space and with compost whose
fertiliser content is pretty well
used up after a few weeks, by
July plants in pots can be close
to starving if you’ve not fed
them regularly. At this time of
year I would still feed
herbaceous perennials and
annuals growing in open
ground too, but I suggest you
resist the temptation to feed
shrubs as these could be
encouraged to put on new
growth which will not be
toughened up enough by the
time winter comes; this late
growth is then very prone to
frost damage. A tomato feed
with a high potash level works
well for anything that you grow
primarily for the flowers so
every time you feed your
tomatoes make up a bit of extra
feed and pop it onto flowering
plants. I tend to buy
concentrated tomato food by
the mini-tanker full as this
works out much more
economical!
Make sure that everything is
deadheaded regularly, both the
faded flowers and if necessary
remove the flower stem too. On
soft stemmed plants you may
be able to do it using your
thumb nail, but a pair of sharp
scissors or similar often makes
for the quickest, neatest and
least messy job. Do this as soon
as the flower starts to
deteriorate so that no energy
whatsoever is used to form
seed heads and it will make a
huge difference to the
performance you see the plants
put on over the next few
weeks. I am a great believer in
the ‘hair cut’ approach where
perennials are given a trim
using scissors or shears as soon
as their flowering period is
over. Do this promptly and
follow it with a good feed and
you can often encourage a
second, later flush of flowers
too.
If plants have become a little
too tall or there has been a lot
of rainfall they can literally flop
over, clogging up the lawn on
borders next to the grass, and
generally looking a real mess.
This is easily solved if you check
that stakes and other supports
are still doing their job and re-
position them if necessary,
taking care not to snap any
flower stems in the process.
You may even find that you
need to add a bit of extra
support or tie in a few of the
taller or more wayward stems –
the foam-covered wire works
really well for this.
At this time of year many
flowers succumb to common
diseases. This is how to deal
with them:
Powdery mildew: keep the
plant well watered at the base
but avoid wetting the leaves
and spray with a suitable
fungicide if necessary.

GardeningGardening
Keeping Healthy In The Sun
20 To advertise in the The Edition The Edition The Edition The Edition call 01333 313941
Aphids: remove with a strong
jet of water, introduce
ladybirds or spray with an
insecticide.
Leaf spots: just pick off the
worst affected leaves.
Rusts: pick off the worst
affected leaves, try to keep the
foliage dry and spray with a
suitable insecticide.
Caterpillars: pick off by hand or
spray with a suitable biological
or chemical control.
Keeping on top of these small
problems is essential - regular
checks should allow you to
take prompt action, so
avoiding too much damage
occurring and often meaning
that you do not even need to
spray.
Weeds tend to be growing
rapidly too, so try to remove
these as they make for a lot of
competition for water, food
and even light. Pulling them
out or hoeing them off when
they are still fairly small is a
much easier and more efficient
way to deal with them than
trying to pull out a massive,
long-rooted triffid that has
already done a lot of damage.
If the weather is dry, regular
watering will also help to keep
your flower beds and
containers looking their best.
To minimise water wastage
and the risk of those delicate
petals becoming scorched, I
suggest that you should only
water in the evening or, if this
is not possible, very early in the
morning. A less frequent but
thorough drenching is a lot
more beneficial than very
frequent but light waterings.
So, with a little extra TLC
everything in the garden can
still look gorgeous for a long
while yet!

[Murray] I’m good. How are you?
[Mr P] I’m f ine but Edna’s nae s’ guid. She’s
really hae’n difficulties getting in or oot a’
the bath. As you ken she’s nae light-weight
any mare an’ I just cannae lift her.
[Murray] Well, there is a wide range of
equipment which can help. There are
steps, boards, seats, grab handles…
[Mr P] Aye. We huv tried lots o’ things but
wi’ her back she’s just no able to get o’re
the side.
[Murray] Well, perhaps the best thing to
look at is a bath lift. This has a seat with
side flaps which you sit on outside the
bath then swing your legs over the side
before lowering down into the water.
When finished bathing the seat is then
raised until the flaps are level with the bath
side. The whole thing is electrically pow-
ered using safe batteries.
[Mr P] That sounds just the job!
I wis speaking tae Jimmy Gibson the ither

Easter Monday saw the most radical
changes to private pensions for a gen-
eration. The political spin is it’s ‘freedom
and choice in pensions’. Yet more choice
means it’s far easier to get it wrong, so
here’s what everyone needs to know in 5
minutes…
Pension freedom sounds like something
from Braveheart – what’s actually hap-
pening? I suspect George Osborne does
picture himself as a financial freedom
fighter. Yet only time will tell whether these
reforms will paint him as the man who lib-
erated older savers, or who exposed them to huge risk.
This is all about how you use your pension
savings. As always you can take a quarter of it as a tax-free lump sum. Yet for decades
most people have effectively needed to use
the remainder of the money to buy an an-
nuity – a product that pays you an income
each year until you die. Now anyone aged 55 and over can take the whole amount as
a lump sum, paying no tax on the first 25%
and the rest taxed as if it were a salary at
their income tax rate.
Does it apply to all types of pension? No,
we’re only really talking private pensions
where you and/or your employer saved up
a pot of cash for retirement. Technically
these are known as ‘defined contribution’
or 'money purchase' pensions.
It doesn’t apply to the state pension, nor in
the main part does it apply to pensions
where what you’re paid is a proportion of your final salary – known technically as
‘defined benefit’ pensions.
There are ways to convert these final salary
pensions into a pot of cash (be very careful of scammers), but don’t do it without genu-
ine independent financial advice
Is it worth taking out my pot as soon as I
can? Usually not. If you’re in your 50s or
early 60s you’re probably still working to-
wards retirement and should be focusing
on putting yourself in a position to have enough income when you do retire – so
you want your pension to keep growing.
Plus by accessing your funds earlier than needed you can reduce your ability to make
future contributions.
Yet you’re saying if I want to, I can just
take out all the cash? If you choose to yes,
but remember only 25% of it is tax-free. The
rest is taxed at your current income tax rate
like salary, and if you take a huge whack, just like if you earn more, some of it will
push you into the higher tax bracket. See
the income tax calculator at www.mse.me/
taxcalc to see the various levels.
If I don’t want to take it all out what can I
do? There are many options, some of them
can be combined, here’s the main ones.
Option 1: Leave it in your pension for when you need it. Then each time you withdraw, 25% of that amount is tax free. Eg, if you had £100,000 and took £20,000 out you’d
31 Please mention the The Edition The Edition The Edition The Edition when responding to adverts
get £5,000 of it tax-free, the rest would be taxed at your current rate.
Option 2: Take 25% tax free, then buy a flexible income drawdown product. This is a product you buy to keep the rest invested so it can still hopefully grow, but you can
also use it to take income when
needed. Here you get the first 25% you
withdraw tax free and then the rest is taxed when you take it – possibly useful if you’re
likely to be in a lower-tax bracket once
you’re older.
Option 3: Take 25% tax free, then buy an annuity. This gives you a guaranteed in-come each year for the rest of your life.
There are different charges on all of these,
and it’s important to check them out and
always compare different providers.
Eh, I thought annuities were as dead as a
dodo’s granny? Actually annuities are a
decent concept, you get the security of
knowing exactly how much you can spend
each year, and that it’ll last for the rest of
your life.
The problem is the rates have been crap,
and 60% of people just got them from their
pension provider rather than checking for
better deals, especially people with poor health who could’ve got much better
rates. Yet done right, with some of your
pension, it can be a useful option for secu-
rity of income for life.
How do I know how much cash I should
take out? That depends on when you’ll die.
I’m not being a smart arse (well maybe a little), but truly that’s the only way to know.
Yet the Office of National Statistics morta l-
ity stats do show likely odds. The typical life
span for a man who hits 65 in the UK is an-other 18 years, a woman 21. Add a little on
that for safety and it means unless you’ve
bad health you probably want to spend
around 4-5% of what you’ve got a year.
What’s this ‘huge risk’ you talked about –
let me guess you’ll warn me not to buy a
Ferrari? I don’t think I need to. If you
choose to do that you know you’re proba-
bly either rather rich already, know you’re being foolish, or that you ain’t got long left.
Actually, I’m far more concerned many will
be nervous about releasing the cash in case they’re left with none in old age and will
therefore sit on it, never spending it, depriv-
ing themselves of the benefit and living a
worse life than necessary. We’re not an in-
vesting nation and are relatively risk averse, so I see this as being a real potential prob-
lem. There’s also the worry that there’s a lot
of scammers about trying to tap people for
cash too.
OK so it's complex, but hasn’t the Gov-
ernment set up a free advice service? No.
It has set up a free guidance service called www.pensionwise.gov.uk. This isn’t
just a semantic difference – this system will
tell you what you can do, not what you
should do. It won’t include help on your benefits, nor on what product to get.
If you’ve a sizable pension pot it’s worth
spending the £300 to £1,000 it’ll cost to get
an independent financial adviser who can tell you what to do (get quotes from a few
first). You can find a local one
through www.vouchedfor.co.uk
or www.unbiased.co.uk.

Enjoying long walks together
should be one of the highlights of
dog ownership, but it can so easily
turn into a nightmare if you’re
constantly battling against a
strong dog. With the best will in
the world, being pulled from pillar
to post by an over-exuberant dog
is no fun, but there is one thing
you can do that will limit this type
of behaviour.
Non-pull dog harnesses are
designed to help you retain
control, and train your
dog to walk well
on the lead. It’s a gentle way to
encourage good behaviour,
which can be reinforced daily.
Reasons why harnesses work
• Harnesses of this type generally
clip on to a dog’s collar, and by
attaching the leash in this
position rather than on its back,
pulling power is significantly
reduced.
• Non-pull harnesses are gentle
training tools which allow
owners to reinforce good
behaviour with treats and
longer walks. Unlike choke
chains, which were popular
in the 1980s,
there’s no
danger of the dog’s throat or
neck being damaged. This can
be a big problem, even with
standard dog collars if the dog
pulls too hard.
• Harnesses like these are
designed with extra padding to
cover areas where friction might
occur, such as underneath the
dog’s stomach and legs where
the skin is delicate.
Dogs are extremely sensitive to
the mood of their owners, so if you
are happy and relaxed when out
walking, the two of you will form a
closer bond.

Set in the Carpathian basi n,
Hungary’s capital is said to rank
among the most beauti ful cities
in Eur ope. Here, the legendary
Danube fl ows thr ough the heart
of town, meandering
romantically around green
islands and under iconic bridges.
On the west bank, the wooded
hills of Buda climb to 527 metres
while to the east, the plain of
Pest rises gently i nto the
distance.
Stroll along the promenade or
sail on t he Danube and as you
gaze at the elegant façades, the
domes and spires glistening
with mosaics, it’s easy to see
why the river banks form an
integral part of the city’s World
Heritage. On the eastern side,
beyond the superb Chai n Bridge
guarded by lion stat ues, pride of
place goes t o the grandiose
Parliament Building, bristling
with pinnacle s and turrets and
topped by a splendid red dome.
Stretching 268 metres al ong the
river, with 27 gates, 691 room s
and a stunni ng 20kms of
stairways, it was inaugurated in
1896 for the Millenni um whic h
marked 1000 years of Hungarian
history. It is home to the Crown
Jewels a nd affectionately
known as the ‘Mother of the
Country’.
On the Buda side, the Royal
Palace rises on Castle Hill, one of
the prettiest districts around
with cobbled squares and
traditional buildings. There are
imposing statues and wrought
iron gates, stylish c olonnades
and archways, a lofty church
with neo-Got hic ornaments and
the must -see Fi sherman’s
Bastion, named after the Guild
once resp onsible for its upkeep,
now a top attraction for its
unrivalled views over the river
and city.
Beyond its hist orical complex,
Buda is a select residential area
while down town, Pest is all
hustle and bustle, its streets
lined with gl eaming shops and
architectural gems, ranging
from neo-Gothic and
Renai ssance to Bar oque,
Ottoman and Art Nouveau.
Andrassy Avenue, the 2.5 km
long commercial hub, is
protected by UNESCO,
alongside the Millenni um
Undergr ound Railway which
foll ows the same route, starting
a few steps from St Step hen’s
Basilica and stretchi ng all the
way to the city park. Among the
many notable sights are the
State Opera House, the nearby
Franz Liszt Academy of Music
and at the entrance t o the park,
the Museum of Fine Arts and
Heroes’ Square where t he semi -
circular memorial is described as
‘a history book made of stone’.
With a lake which is a n ice rink in
winter, Botanical Gardens and
medicinal baths boasti ng 18
pools i n and outdoors, the park
is a favourite haunt of city folks,
just one of many venues where
you can relax i n this ‘land of
1000 hot springs.’ There are over
100 of them i n and around
town, incl uding those on Gellert
Hill prized since Roman times.
The hill offers sweeping vistas
over the city.
But sooner or later, the Danube
calls you back with waterside
restaurants, panoramic cruises
and bridges revealing ever
changing views and
architectural styles, from the
contemporary Elizabet h Bridge
to the iron Liberty Bridge where
the last silver rivet was put in
place by Franz Josep h, Emperor
of Austria and Ki ng of Hungary.
Budapest suffered much
destruction i n the past, but with
its beautifully rest ored
buildings, the ‘Queen of the
Danube’ truly deserves its place
among Europe’s fi nest cities.

Ready in 1 hour Makes 4
Barbecued Barbecued Rack of RibsRack of Ribs
Ingredients:
• 2-3 racks of pork ribs (see Tip)
• 6 tbsp tomato ketchup
• 3 tbsp maple syrup
• 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
• 2 tbsp sunflower oil
• 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
• 1-2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
Tip:
Most large supermarkets sell racks of
ribs or ask your local butcher to
prepare them for you. Single ribs will
work just as well (you’ll need about 2kg
in weight), just reduce the simmering
time to about 25 minutes.
1
2
3
Place the ribs in a large pan and cover with
cold water. Bring to the boil then skim off
any scum from the surface of the water.
Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently
for 45 minutes.
Meanwhile, place the rest of the ingredients
in a pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5-
10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season to
taste with salt and freshly ground black
pepper. Leave to cool.
Remove the racks from the pan and drain
on a board lined with kitchen paper. Leave
to cool for 5 minutes then brush each rack
liberally with some of the sauce.
Cook the ribs on the edge of a hot barbecue
for 10-15 minutes, turning and basting with
any remaining sauce until the ribs are
lightly charred in places. Alternatively, the
ribs can be cooked under a medium
preheated grill.
4
Pre-cooking ribs in a pan of
simmering water before placing them
on the barbecue will ensure meltingly
tender meat every time. This method
also saves space on the barbecue as
the final cooking time with the sauce
is much shorter. Serve with a spicy
chunky tomato salsa, if liked.

Clutter has a way of slipping
into our world without us
even noticing. It piles up on
our hotspots, in our dresser
drawers and on our back-
sides. Yes you know that
very personal clutter that we
collect because we over
indulge. All clutter is a result
of over indulging; too many
clothes, too many shoes, too
much stuff!
What do we do with our
clutter? We try to disguise it;
by putting it in pretty little
boxes, baskets and plastic
tubs. Just because we have
contained it does not make
it any less clutter. In fact if
you need to find something
those clutter containers
throw up all over your
home. In our haste to cam-
ouflage our clutter we don’t
get rid of it we just cover it
up.
We do this with our bodies
too! Think of it this way!
Let’s say our favorite jeans
get a little too tight! Instead
of eliminating those sodas
and sweet treats for a week;
we reach for our fat clothes.
You know the ones that are
hiding in your drawer for
those bloated “that time of
the month” days. The ones
with drawstrings and elastic;
has wearing these clothes
become part of your daily
routine.
Elastic is not our friend! It
doesn’t bring our Body Clut-
ter to our attention! That
little uncomfortable feeling
in our jeans should be just
the call to action we need to
take the babysteps to de-
clutter. I am not talking
about crash dieting either.
Those don’t work any better
than crisis cleaning. Oh yeah
they will help you lose the
weight to get into that wed-
ding dress or bathing suit
but after you accomplish
your unrealistic goal; the
weight will come back and
more too boot! We don’t
need any more weight in
our boots.
Here is what we can do to
address our Body Clutter.
1. Don’t wear clothes with
elastic or drawstrings.
2. Weigh every day! This tells
you how your body reacted
to what you did yesterday!
3. Never crash diet!
4. Eat 3 meals a day and 3
snacks. Eat something good
for you every two hours.
5. Babystep your way out of
drinking sugar or diet sodas.
Replace with water.
6. Do 15 minutes of lov ing
movement each day!
7. Drink 8 glasses of water.
This is so simple and it is the
best beauty treatment you
can do!
8. GET RID OF YOUR FAT
CLOTHES!
Body Clutter is n ot just the
cellulite on our thighs, it is
the negative thinking we
have between our ears.
When we look at our re la-
tionship with food, we will
begin to eat and move to
bless our bodies. We have
been indulging our little
princess for a long time! You
would not allow your chil-
dren to eat like you do or be
sedentary! It is time to go
out and play!
