It was the 28th January and I was feeling extremely happy. After a rough few months things were finally starting to look up and I was packing my case ready to get married in two days time!I danced around the house ticking items off my list as I threw them in my bag, deodorant? Check! Toothpaste? Check! And then as my hand hovered over a box of tampons, a small frown came over my face as I started to do mental calculations in my head. Where the bloody hell was my period? I’d worked out it should have been and gone long before the wedding!I usually have a test or two knocking about so I grabbed one and did the business. You know the drill, pee, put the cap on, stick it on the back of the loo and wait three minutes. Usually

I walked towards him, white pee-covered stick thrust out towards him. “Peter, I’m pregnant!’In my head he would jump up to greet me and hug me and tell me everything was going to be okay. In reality he gave me the briefest of glances before saying “Ha-ha’“No, Peter, I’m pregnant.’ ‘Yeah - sure you are...’“Peter! Look at the stick!’He looked at it puzzled and said, “Well I don’t know what that means!’I stormed up the stairs in a sudden rage, he followed me up and I shoved the instructions into his hand. I stood, panting waiting for his response.‘Cool’ he said, a big grin on his

Did he not understand? I was pregnant, with child, up the duff!“Peter you have to go and get me another test right now’ I shrieked, on the brink of tears. For once he didn’t argue and disappeared swiftly out of the door.Quickly I dashed to the bedroom and grabbed my phone to call my sister.“Hello’ - thank God for

A mixture of sobs and tears but when I explained I’d only done one test she told me to ring back after test two. So mine isn’t a fairy tale story, I had a big life-changing shock. But as my next few posts will prove, it’s all going to be okay.. honest! So if you’re in a similar situation, don’t panic!

After having a very long and painful labour with my first child, Maddison, who is now 6, I was determined it wasn’t going to happen again. I didn’t want my previous experience to affect me with my second so that’s when I decided to try hypnobirthing. I had read about it and how it can help you relax with the build-up and during labour and enable you to birth with minimal pain relief. I enrolled on the course from around 30 weeks and attended once a week for 5 weeks with my fiancé Liam. He was a little apprehensive at first but after a couple of sessions he

MY BIRTH

STORY

was just as eager as me to learn more. Vicki, a midwife at North Tees Hospital, led the classes and got is to interact with other couples, taught us all techniques and extra things to practice at home. We were given the Marie M o n g a n hypnobirthing book and CD to use at home which I read and listened to every night. I had a smooth and easy pregnancy but once my due date came and passed I got a little anxious and just wanted my baby to arrive. After trying all of the old wives tales she still didn’t want to come.

At 7 days I had a sweep with the midwife which I was hoping would start my labour like it did with my first child, but this wasn’t meant to be either! The following day I went for a long walk and again on the evening with Liam which brought on my surges (contractions) and they became strong and regular but weren’t painful. Late that evening I rang the hospital to prepare them I may be coming along soon as I had planned a water birth at The Birthing Centre and they need plenty of time to prepare.

Unfortunately after a visit there my contractions slowed; I was only 2 cm dilated and in the early stages of labour. I was very upset to be sent home and had visions of the same thing happening again with Maddison. I was up and down all that night and the following day with irregular contractions but they were getting stronger. I used the breathing techniques I had learnt and used lavender oil on a flannel to keep me relaxed.

On the Saturday I was term plus 10. After an irritable night and lots of trips to the toilet I decided to visit the day assessment

unit as I suspected a water infection. My suspicions were correct so I was prescribed antibiotics and was then examined by the midwife for a second sweep. To my absolute joy she told me I was 5cm dilated and assured me our baby was coming that day. I nearly hopped off the bed with excitement. She suggested I go home and come back once I was ready.

After a quick trip to Tesco for my prescription my contractions were coming thick and fast. We managed to make it home for my bag and rang the delivery suite to say I would be heading to the birthing centre. Unfortunately there was a shortage of staff at North Tees so they were unable to release a midwife. By this time I didn’t care where I went I just wanted my baby here.

We arrived around 11:30am and I was ushered to an active birthing room. I decided if I couldn’t have my planned water birth I would try a bath, which gave Liam a little time to watch some of the Middlesbrough game he was missing! After a short while he ordered me out as it was slowing my surges and once out of the bath they were coming one after the other. I perched myself on a bean bag and knew that she was about to arrive. At this point I used the gas and air as I was really struggling to breath through my nose as I had been taught, because I was full of cold.I carried on with my surge breaths, listened to Liam’s encouragement and began to breathe my baby down. The

midwife didn’t have chance to examine me as once my waters

broke her head was visible with a mop of hair. The feeling was elating knowing that I was breathing my baby down, without any intervention or pushing. After a short time our beautiful daughter

w a s born at 3:07pm on Saturday 14th March, We named her Florence.

After a few hours we took our healthy and very relaxed baby home to meet her big

sister. I felt absolutely great and was happy not to need any stitches this time.

I had 2 midwives during my time in delivery, Wendy and Trish, who were wonderful and very understanding of my hypnobirthing choices. With the help of Vicki’s h y p n o b i r t h i n g classes I managed to have

the birth I had been wanting. I also couldn’t have done

it without the support and encouragement of my amazing fiancé Liam.

I would highly recommend hypnobirthing to anyone whether it may be your first or fifth baby and I will undoubtedly be using it again next time.

One Week

Towards the end of your baby’s first week, his stomach will have grown to the size of an apricot. Your baby should be putting on some weight now and be producing around six wet nappies a day.

The Size of your newborn’s stomach

Your baby’s first few weeks and months are amazing in terms of growth. Knowing what to expect helps you relax more and enjoy your baby without the anxiety that you are not feeding ‘enough’ or your baby isn’t gaining enough weight. This little guide into the actual size of your newborn’s stomach should help to dispel the myths concerning how much or little your baby needs in the first few weeks.

Day One

When your baby is first born, their stomach is no bigger than a cherry. Because of its small size, your baby will need to feed often to keep themselves feeling full. Your baby will be able to take in a little more milk with each feed.

Scrummy Mummie’s Midwife says: “Babies all gain weight at different rates. The rapid growth of your baby’s stomach coincides with your milk coming in, and may also go some way to explain those sudden growth spurts, and periods of demand feeding where if you are breastfeeding you feel as if you are constantly feeding!”

Day Three

Three days after your baby was born, his stomach will have grown to about the size of a walnut. It’s already grown a lot from the day they were born!

One Month

The expansion of your baby’s stomach will have slowed a little now. But by the time your baby is two weeks old, his stomach will be roughly the size of a large hen’s egg.

The Competitive OneYou know your baby sleeps finally? Trixibelle has been sleeping through since six weeks. Your baby is crawling? Trixibelle started to walk the other day. Your baby says ‘mama?’ That’s nothing, Trixibelle has been communicating since four months old.Anything your baby does Trixibelle will have done better. And sooner.Hard to believe that darling Trixibelle is a walking talking genius when she just looks like a pink blob in the pram.

The Lush OnePersonally she is one of my favourites, there is nothing that can’t be solved at the bottom of a wine glass bottle. Or a better sound than the clink of ice cubes for your G&T refill. You need a stiff drink then this is the mummy for you. If you need someone to clamber round soft play with, then I’d steer clear. Wine and soft play do not mix. Even if you need a drink after attending one!

The (more) Knackered OneThis is bad. But she makes you feel better. Up three times in the night with your baby? That’s nothing, this poor mum was up on the hour every hour thanks to young Freddie and his reflux. You are in awe of how she is still managing to walk in a straight line let alone leave the house. Please feed this mummy coffee and give her a massive hug. She needs it.

The Know-it-all OneYou just don’t know what to do, your baby is sick again. Ms. Know-it-all will have the answer; be it Calpol or sliced onions in their socks she will have a trick for you.Need your baby to sleep? White noise. No white noise. Comforter. Dummy. She will have an answer or an opinion on it all. Infuriating. Especially as this mummy hasn’t got years of experience to fall back on, nope little Genevieve is only three weeks old. But you know. She’s read the books. She knows what’s what.

The Over Sharer OneTimmy did a poo. Whoop. Timmy did

a poo in the potty. Double whoop. Timmy’s poo looks a little funny. So take him to the doctors.I do not have any desire or need to see any pictures. And definitely no videos. I see enough of my own child’s poop to be assaulted with images of any more.

The Dr Google OneAlfie has a sniffle. Nope. According to Dr Google, Alfie has the flu which means she should steer clear for a week.

The Types Of Mum Baby Groups

Mummy friends, mummy enemies, the mummy we love to hate. You find all sorts lurking in baby groups, doing the circuits.Having held the title “Mummy” for just over two and a half years I have been around the block with the baby groups and coffee mornings. Probably even more so given the fact I emigrated when the toddler was six months old and all the work I had put into meeting Mum friends had to be re-done.This I feel qualifies me to warn you of some types you may encounter along the way.

Alfie has a heat rash. Nope. According to Dr Google, Alfie could have the start of chicken pox, or hand foot and mouth.Alfie is teething. Nope. According to Dr Google, Alfie is too young/too old/not in the right wonder week to teethe. It must be something else.

The Hippy OneBaby wearing, baby led, organic loving, home made mummy. She’s never bothered with a pram and looks disdainfully at your beloved Bugaboo with your sleeping (ha) angel in as you sit down for coffee. True, she has her hands free with little Moonbeam strapped to her chest but imagine the heat. Then the guilt you’ll feel as you stuff chocolate cake as a form of bribery treat for your toddler to sit still for one second as she pulls out the organic vegetable sticks, no refined sugar here.

The Facebook OneYou meet her once and she tracks you down on Facebook. You may never see her again but you know how young Archibald is doing because she posts about him 17 times a day. And when not posting about young Archibald she’s checking in at soft play. Or asking inane questions. Or doing that Facebook thing we all love to hate....Archibald’s Mummy is feeling depressed.Cue list of nosey concerned friends oozing sympathy and asking what’s up leading to the one comment that will leave everyone fuming.Oh I’ll PM you.

The Pinterest Perfect OneYou’re congratulating yourself on showering and wiping the baby sick that’s been there three days from your shoulder with a baby wipe when little Tallulah’s mummy arrives with a pristine Tallulah, bearing home made fairy cakes she whipped up

that morning just because, with Tallulah’s latest art project and craft peeking out of her designer handbag. Not the scribbled, screwed up mess your offspring presents to you but beautifully completed projects that ACTUALLY look like the Pinterest picture.

The Blogger OneYes I am a mummy blogger. Chances are if we have a play date I will attempt to write an amusing anecdote about it (I say attempt as I have about a 50% success rate). I will take pictures and then crop out your offspring at your request, so I can blog about our day.I probably have nothing left to say that you didn’t already know because you’d read it on my blog. At least. I like to think

you’d read it on my blog. What do you mean you don’t follow me on Facebook??Are my social media buttons not big enough or in your face enough??

The Mummy Soulmate OneWhere it doesn’t matter what type of Mummy you are, you just click and bond over all things Mummy related. Before you know it they become a true friend, one you laugh with, cry with, drink with, eat too much cake with, wipe baby poo off all conceivable surfaces with. Once you find this one make sure not to let them go!To all my mummy friends I’m sorry if I’ve used you on the blog or relayed any stories above..... you know who you are and you know I wouldn’t be without you.

Hamsterley Forest Superworm Trail Based on the children’s book by Julia Donaldson. Activity packs to go with the trail can be bought onsite at the cafe (£3.50 and include a special edition book). The trail starts on Saturday 14th March and runs to October.

Research shows that around the age of two is the best time to start potty training. In fact, nappies could be ‘masking’ that your child is ready.

Look for the clues…… Can your child communicate with you? Does he/she have good physical skills, such as being able to walk and climb stairs? Can he/she take direction, like being shown how to wash hands? If you answer yes to these and your little one is around two or more then don’t be afraid – go for it!

Don’t put off taking the nappy off.

Although it can be tempting to wait for a holiday to start potty training, you will reap the benefits if you start when your child is ready. (Research shows it can take longer if you wait too long.)

Simple Steps to Potty Success

1. Before you start potty training, begin teaching the routine of going to the toilet. Take your child into the bathroom with you to ‘practice’ everything from turning on the light to wiping off the poo, washing hands and closing the door.

2. Stop using nappies and nappy-style training pants and put your little one into proper pants. (You can pop in a Dry Like Me pad to catch accidents.)

3. Pop your child on the potty or toilet 20 minutes after food and drink. Do this in the bathroom when you can.

4. Accidents are a key part of learning. When your child has little accidents, remember that they will be starting to understand and react to what’s happening. This awareness is key to making real progress, so try not to use a product that makes it difficult for them to realize they

have had an accident.

5. Potty training can be a stressful time, but try not to get too stressed. It can help if you turn any anger or frustration towards the accidental poo or wee! “What a naughty poo!”

Tips from the award-winning book ‘How to Potty Train’ by Judith Hough and Diane Titterton. For more tips or to find out more about the book, ‘How to Potty Train’ see www.DryLikeMe.com.

HOW TO GET YOUR LITTLE ONE OUT OF NAPPIES AND INTO PROPER

PANTS

WIN A ‘SMART WAY TO POTTY TRAIN’ PACK TO GET OUT OF NAPPIES AND INTO PROPER

PANTS

Dry Like Me, the award-winning potty training pads worn in children’s proper pants, were created by mums, Jude and Di, when they couldn’t find anything that helped to move their potty training children away from nappies and into their own pants. Dry Like Me are now sold by most supermarkets and online at Amazon and www.drylikeme.com. There are three types to choose from: ‘Early Days’ for the start of potty training, ‘Original’ for the middle to end stages and ‘Night-Time’ to help children get dry at night. For the first time ever, some of the best loved - and most feared - heroes and villains of Roald Dahl’s stories have been brought together in a brand new interactive adventure story, as part of a marvellously messy and ground-breaking partnership between Persil, the Roald Dahl Literary Estate and Quentin Blake. The ‘My Messy Adventure’ story enables every child (and big kids!) to be the hero of their very own Roald Dahl story, where they will get to meet The Witches, Matilda or James (James and the Giant Peach) along the way. Free to play at www.persil.co.uk/Roald-Dahl, the story will encourage families to get outside and go exploring this summer. The ‘My Messy Adventure’ story can be accessed on a smartphone or tablet, and is totally interactive and enriched by the outside world. This innovative new format allows children to enjoy Roald Dahl’s amazing

TV personality & mum of two Gabby Logan says: “I loved reading Roald Dahl books when I was growing up, and then again with my children – our all-time favourite is Matilda! With ‘My Messy Adventure’ from Persil, kids can actually become part of the story and it brilliantly combines the enchantment of Roald Dahl with fun, physical outdoor activities. With the summer holidays approaching, this is a fantastic, free way to entertain the whole family.”

The path they take will determine their unique and personal journey, culminating in a ‘digital scrapbook’ to showcase their exciting adventure. With several characters to choose from, the story guarantees hours of fun during the summer holidays.

Confessions of a

scrummyMummy

There is something I have been thinking about a lot over the last few weeks. After two weeks on holiday with the children, I feel like I could use a holiday myself! I’m absolutely shattered, there wasn’t a day when we stopped and we just kept going and going, with so much to do and so much to see. We had a blast, but it has definitely not been the relaxing holiday of yesterday year where the tan is topped up and the cocktails flow.

I’m not complaining. I wouldn’t have it any other way, I have loved every minute of being with the boys and playing in pools, exploring bazaars and enjoying swimming in the warm sea. The journey home I did not enjoy at all and neither did they. They were tired, grumpy and just generally badly behaved. Reuben started the day by being rude and obnoxious towards me, deliberately defiant to his Dad and just being on the whole, a little rat bag. Toby was over tired and grumpy for most of the day, the child has

an aversion to sitting still and displayed that aversion with a style that is rarely seen outside of zoos. I’m talking gymnastic style temper tantrums. By the time we got to the airport and got stuck in a huge border control queue, I was about ready to cry and so were they. It didn’t even bear thinking about the 4 1/2 hour drive home.

I went from being the mother I like to think I am (the one I feel proud of and like to pretend I am all of the time) to being a raging, shouting, swearing (oh yes, swearing – and at the children too) monster that I absolutely abhor. I’m pretty sure I uttered the words, ‘ If you don’t stop doing that to people, Reuben, I am going to literally KILL YOU!’ Model your parenting from me people, just go ahead and consider me a guru.

Then something happened. A lady came up to me and asked how old the children were. She had been watching them on the flight and had seen us all go from relatively cool and in control to frazzled as their behaviour deteriorated. I answered that they were 1, nearly 2 and 3 1/2 years old. She told me she was surprised by how well they had coped with a flight and how well behaved they had been, what lovely children. Was she seeing the same kids as me (at this point Toby was hanging upside down in a suspended crab because he didn’t want to be held anymore and Reuben was casually trying to take the legs out of every person waiting for a passport check on his trunki)? I looked at them and then back at her and she told me that for 1 and 3 you could hardly tell they were there, they had been quiet and well behaved for the most part, far better than most kids she knew who spent from take off to landing screaming or throwing things.

I couldn’t believe it, and then I looked at the boys again and really thought about their behaviour.

Had it been so bad? Or was it more mine that had been questionable as the supposed adult? Had I lost my temper so many times with them because they were, in fact, behaving like normal children and I was the one ‘acting out’ because I was tired and frustrated? The simple fact is, children aren’t meant to sit still and behave themselves on travel days that take 14 hours, they aren’t meant be seen but not heard. They act out because they are bored and tired and fed up, just in the same way that we do.

My expectations of that trip home were just way too high. Why had my children’s behaviour been so much better on the way out? Had I asked Reuben why he had been so rude and uncharacteristically awkward/defiant towards me and his Dad since he woke up? Nope. So I decided I would. Do you know the reply? ‘Mummy, I don’t want to go home, I don’t want to go back to preschool and I’m sad that I can’t go to the pool. You said I couldn’t go after breakfast and that makes me angry and smashy.’ That is quite simply the same way I felt. I didn’t want to come home, go back to normality and the humdrum of daily life. The difference between me and a 3 year old is that I have years and years of understanding of the way the world works and that holidays eventually end, life goes back to ‘normal’ and we look forward to the next one. If I could have a temper tantrum about it all without being locked up for ABH and criminal damage then I’d probably whack someone and kick a few chairs too!Toby isn’t quite 2 years old and feeds from his surroundings, if his brother is behaving badly then he follows suit.

On the drive home, after our little chat about the holiday being over now but that didn’t mean we had to stop having fun, and how he would see all his friends at preschool and his Grandparents the week after, Roo was a dream child. He slept for the majority of the way, woke up to ask for drinks, food or a toilet break and then drifted off again. Toby followed his big brother’s footsteps and calmed right down, though he didn’t sleep quite so well because

he was hungry and over tired. I spent the rest of the journey really thinking about how the

whole day had played out and how I should try to adjust my parenting style from now on, to really avoid those times when you just lose your cool. I’m not saying I’ve had an epiphany and will never lose it again, of course I will, but maybe an unnecessary meltdown can be avoided by asked more questions, stopping for a second and thinking about why the boys are acting out. Validating the way they are feeling and possibly expecting, not less, but different outcomes

to situations.

So, a little challenge for you. If you are prone to losing your cool, or you just find that you are doing it more often of late, then I challenge you to sit down and really think about how your child is behaving and what it is that they are doing that

drives you so crazy. Is there a reason? Have you asked? Is there a time or a place that the behaviour worsens, and if so, could something be on their mind that they can’t express because they haven’t learnt how?

Give it a go, or if you already are a pro at this, let me know and tell me how you make it work for you… unless it’s with wine. Then go away and come back after January ok?

Harriet x
