Students at Mitchell County High Schoolare Becoming Certified Nursing Assistants continued from page 1

The Nursing Assistant industry is an ever-growing field and will always be in demand. With the increasing aging population, this is a stable position for students to enter. Many individuals become a nursing assistant for many reasons. Some simply likethe field; others use their time as a nursing assistant as a stepping stone to get into more advanced careers in the medicalindustry. The beginning average salary for CNA is $18,500, for a LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) the average is $27,914 andfor RN (Registered Nurse), the average beginning salary is $49,504.

Nursing Assistants are usually employed at hospitals, nursing homes, mental health facilities, assisted living facilities and somework directly inside the patient’s home. A nursing assistant works directly under a nurse, who will instruct the assistant in theirdaily work details. A nursing assistant will spend a majority of their time with patients. The duties include examining vitalsigns, feeding patients, grooming, bathing, and helping nurses with different types of medical equipment. A nursing assistant isalso responsible for giving patients social as well as emotional support – empathy definitely plays an important part in nursingassistant’s role.

The training consists of learning about the basics of Anatomy and Physiology, the Fundamentals of Nursing Skills, Nutrition, and Infection Management. Not only will students learn from text books, but they will also receive hands-on-training. Studentswill do their onsite training at Mitchell Convalescent Center. Before going onsite for training, all students are required to have acriminal background check, a drug test and a TB skin test. Once training is completed, the students will take the CNAcertification exam. After completing all training and certification, the students will be ready for employment, which will allowthem to play an important role in our community. For more details about this program, contact Sheila Anglin at 336-0970.

CRCT Tips for ParentsParents, here are things you can do to help your children be as successful as possible on the CRCT. Make sure your children get a good night’s sleep before testing. Provide a healthy breakfast or have breakfast at school. (7:45 a.m.) Get them to school on time. When students are late or rush in at the last minute, it is hard to get calm and focused for testing. Check to see that your child has at least two number 2 pencils. Mechanical pencils are not allowed. If you must schedule appointments, schedule them for the afternoon so that

students do not miss testing. Students who test in their own classrooms and at normal testing time are morelikely to perform to their full capabilities. While we do provide make-up sessions, they are sometimes inunfamiliar settings. Help your child stay relaxed. Some students suffer from test anxiety but feel reassured when we are calmand tell them we have faith in them and that we know they will do their best.

Freshmen Academy StudentsCreate Bingo Cards on Computer Terms

In Ms. Jane Warren’s Computer in the Modern World class, students have been busy learning about the history of computers, which includesimportant people and terms. Each student created memory cards of computer terms which will be used with the BINGO Board they created. The bingo boards were designed by each student using their memory cards. They printed the Bingo Boards on colored cardstock. Afterresearching famous people involved in the computer industry, students selected a person and created a “Wanted Poster.” On their poster theyhave a picture of their person and information on that person as well as a reward for their capture. Did you know that the term computer bug

came from Grace Hopper who actually found a moth in thecircuit of her computer?

Students created a timeline of important events in the history ofthe computer. Each student selected their own events andpictures to place on their timeline. Last, students alsoresearched computer ethics and learned about copyright, plagiarism, and taking notes. They have learned aboutwww.snopes, a website to help determine whether informationis true or false. Students have found urban legends to be quiteinteresting.
