1254 – 1296

Floris 5th was born in Leiden in june 1254.

When he was 2 years old, he became duke of Holland and Zeeland.

When he was 12 years old, he was old enough to reign over Holland.

Floris wanted to take revanche for the death of his father.

He tried to conquer West-Friesland and succeeded.

The nobility was unhappy, because Floris took their power and became more powerful himself.

Floris build a lot of beautiful castles. Here’s some of them: Muiderslot, Slot te Wijdeses, kasteel Ratbouw.

The Ridderzaal in The Hague was earlier build by Willem II, but Floris the 5th broke it down to build a bigger one himself. The Ridderzaal is now used by the Dutch government.

On June 27th 1296 Floris got killed by Gerard van Velzen.
