Box 361 Winooski, VT 05404 (802) 338-8979 tel www.dreamprogram.org Elm Street DREAM Monthly Snapshot September 2012 Program Happenings and Highlights Elm Street DREAM started off another great semester of mentoring and welcomed co- chairs Seth Delorme, Madeleine Gibson, Hannah Faesy, Caleb Demers, and Kate Cahalane. Three Elm Street mentors joined other mentors from around the state for DREAMstocck, The DREAM office’s annual mentor retreat. Mentors and mentees hiked a section of the long trail along with 40 other UVM clubs in honor of former mentor Avi Kurganoff. This memorial and fundraiser raised money for a scholarship fund so that DREAM kids throughout New England will have the opportunity to participate in Outward-Bound trips. Avi’s parents honored DREAM by joining the mentors and kids on their section of the long-trail. The Elm Street program is currently recruiting new mentors and kids. Elm Street welcomed back former co-chair Steph Baer as the Program Partner. She will help support the program throughout the semester. Participants Mentees Mentors Total: 37 Total: 39 Females: 20 Females: 31 Males: 17 Males: 8 Weekly Programming with Children Elm Street kicked off a new semester of mentoring with a barbeque at Oakledge Park. Mentors and mentees played lots of fun yard games like Frisbee and tag. Mentors took the kids down to the waterfront for a day of fun in the sun. Mentors and mentees competed in a watermelon seed-spitting contest that was tons of fun. DREAM and the UVM Outing Club teamed up to lead an afternoon of survival skills at Centennial Woods in preparation for the Catamountain classic. Mentors and mentees learned about navigation, fire building, and plant identification. The programs split up for one-on-ones to relax before a big Saturday of hiking at the Catamountain Classic.
