Dear Waters Landing Families:

Can you believe that we are getting ready to enter the 4th Quarter? It really seems like the

school year just started. We have students and staff working hard to make certain all of our

students are learning and making progress. Thank you to all of the volunteers who donate their

time to help out with our classes.

I am proud to announce that Ana Carolina Avillez do Nascimento won the Young Author’s

Contest sponsored by the state and county councils of the International Reading Association.

Her short story “Hijacked” won for fourth grade in Montgomery County. She went on to win

2nd place in the state contest. Congratulations, Ana!

Thank you to all of the families who came to the Winter Dance, Book Fair, and Valentine’s

Parties, Science Fair, and Multicultural Nigh. It was great to see so many families at our

school. At the March 5th PTA meeting, Mr. Andrew Bradshaw, WLES Math Content Coach,

presented information on the C2.0 math curriculum. At our next PTA meeting scheduled for

April 9th, we will have a special update from Mr. Joe DeRosa regarding our construction pro-

cess.

Report Cards for the 3rd Quarter will be sent home after spring break. Please take time to re-

view them with your child. If you have any questions, please make certain you email or call

your child’s teacher. You are an important part of your child’s educational team. We want to

make certain that your child is making progress and learning.

Kindergarten Registration Remember when you came to register your Kindergartner? It’s time to welcome our newest members to

WLES!! Registration will be May 9th and 10th, from 9:30am to 3:30pm. Volunteers are needed to help

the staff make copies, give a short school tour (1st floor only) to new parents or help set up drink and

snacks for the incoming Kindergartners. If you have some time and would like to help, please contact

Lucy Monroy at 301-793-9871 or email Lucinymd@gmail.com. We are looking for help anytime between 9:30am-12pm and

1pm-3:30pm. Children are welcomed , they can go with you to the tour or play in the snack room! Please consider donat-

Mark your calendars for DOLPHINMANIA!!!

Dolphinmania, our school's spring carnival, will be held Saturday, May 18th from 4pm

to 7pm. It will be a fun time of celebrating another great school year...you won't want

to miss it! We have GIANT inflatables lined up, a balloon guy, games, food, crafts,

and so much more! We'll, again this year, be holding a basket auction so watch your

April Friday folders for some ideas for donations for your grade level's basket. And

your teachers are already thinking about their ideas for the teacher auction so stay

tuned!!! We have some great volunteers that have stepped forward to head up different

areas of the carnival and we are grateful to each of them, but they will also need some

help on the day of the carnival. We're looking for volunteers that would be willing to help, for any length of time,

Olympic Days are fast approaching. Mark your calendars now for these fun

events which are held during the school day. Each class will select a state to

represent this year. Students participate in a wide variety of activities in the

gym and out on the fields and blacktops. Students should wear tennis shoes

and cool clothing. Information letters will be sent home describing each day

more in detail.

Multicultural Night Success!! A great big THANK YOU to the ESOL Team for putting together the Multicultural

Night!!! It was a huge success!! Some of the countries present were: El Salvador,

Honduras, United Kingdom, Jamaica, Pakistan, Italy, Dominican Republic, South

Korea, Cuba, Panama, Vietnam, China, Germany, India, Ghana and last but not

least, the US with NY!! The kids were so enthusiastically visiting all the countries

that had set up camp that night. Great performances by the parents and kids, exquis-

ite attire was worn by many and magnificent food was served. Overall a wonderful

night was had by all!!!

WANTED: PTA PRESIDENT, VICE PRESIDENT, TREASURER AND SECRETATY Dear Parents and Guardians:

We continue to plead with you regarding the Executive positions becoming available for this coming year. Election time is

drawing near for our new slate of PTA Officers for the 2013-14 school year. All of our current officers will be stepping down,

so this is your opportunity to take a vital role in continuing the great work of our PTA at Waters Landing. Below is a list of the

duties of the 4 officers that make up the executive leadership of our PTA. Please take some time to read over the position de-

scriptions, and really give some thought to how you can help. All of the these positions can be, and have been, held by some-

one with a full-time job. We are all working parents regardless of where we work, so we all understand that the volunteers who

serve on the PTA do the best that they can with the time that they have available to devote to their position. It is also helpful to

know that all of these positions have been held by at least one parent who is currently still at Waters Landing, so you will have

an opportunity to receive some on-site training and a resource to ask questions of should you need assistance. Further, every

summer the Maryland PTA holds training on a Saturday for all officers (as well as select committee chairpersons) , it can be

very helpful to get you started on the right path. Please consider volunteering your time in one of these important positions next

year. Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss any of these positions further, or if you would like to serve as an of-

ficer. Let's continue the tradition of excellence that so many in the past have worked so hard to achieve for our PTA and our

school!

Duties of Officers

The President shall:

a. preside at all meeting of this local PTA, the board of directors, and executive committee;

b. coordinate the work of the officers and committees of this local PTA in order that the purposes may be promoted;

c. perform such other duties as may be prescribed in these bylaws or assigned by this local PTA or by the board of directors;

d. represent this local PTA at all council meetings or send an alternate.

The Vice President shall:

a. act as aide(s) to the president;

b. in their designated order perform the duties of the president in the absence or inability of that officer to serve;

c. and perform such other duties as may be prescribed in these bylaws or assigned by this local PTA or by the board of directors.

The Secretary shall:

a. record the minutes of all meetings of this local PTA, the board of directors, and executive committee;

b. be prepared to read the minutes of the previous meeting;

c. file all records;

d. have a current copy of the bylaws;

e. maintain a current membership list; and

f. perform such other duties as may be prescribed in these bylaws or assigned by this local PTA/PTSA or by the board of directors.

The Treasurer shall:

a. have custody of all funds of this local PTA;

b. keep a full and accurate account of receipts and expenditures including reconciliation of the bank statement each month;

c. make disbursements as authorized by the president or board of directors of this local PTA in accordance with the budget adopted

by this local PTA;

d. present a written financial statement at every meeting of the executive committee, the board of directors, the general membership

and at other times when requested by the board of directors;

e. make a final report before the newly elected officers officially assume their duties;

f. be responsible for the maintenance of such books of account and records as to conform to the requirements of Article IV, Section

14 of these bylaws;

g. be responsible for preparing and filing all necessary tax forms; h. have the accounts examined at the close of the fiscal year and upon change of treasurer by an auditor or an auditing committee of

not less than three (3) persons who, satisfied that the treasurer’s annual report is correct, shall sign a statement of that fact at the end

of the report. An auditor or an auditing committee shall be selected by the board of directors at least thirty (30) days before the new

officers assume their duties; and

i. perform such other duties as may be prescribed in these bylaws or assigned by this local PTA/PTSA or by the board of directors.

HOSPICE CARING IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

CAMP CARING - FREE – Dates: May 31, June 1, June 2, 2012 WHERE: Skycroft Conference Center in Middleburg, MD.

CAMP CARING is a 3 day bereavement camp designed to bring comfort and support to children ages 8-12 (grades 2-5) following the death

of someone they love.

The camp takes place in Middletown, Maryland at a 300 acres Skycroft Conference Center. This facility is complete with dining hall, chal-

lenge course, playing courts, and swimming pool. Campers sleep in lovely air-conditioned cabins, complete with full bathrooms and show-

ers. Hospice Caring provides bus transportation from the Cottage in Gaithersburg to and from Skycroft.

Each child is paired with an adult “Big Buddy” who gives support, is an ever-ready listener and is with them 24 hours a day.

Chelsea Cunningham How long and what grades have you taught?

I have been teaching for several years. I taught 4th grade

for two years and this year I am a third grade teacher.

Do you have a family? Yes, I am married.

What is your cultural background? I was born in Balti-

more, but I also lived in Uruguay, South America.

What college did you attend? I graduated from UMD. I

studied elementary education and Spanish literature. Go

What do you like to do when you are not working? I enjoy

running, reading, and playing piano.

What is your favorite food? Sushi.

What is your favorite color? Yellow

What is your favorite book? “Out of the Dust.”

What is your favorite vacation? I like to go to a beach

where I can scuba dive.

What is your favorite holiday? I like the 4th of July, Inde-

pendence Day.

What do you like best about teaching at WLES? I like get-

ting to know my students and watching them become life-

long learners.

If you had one dream, what would it be? I would like to get

an unlimited travel pass to go anywhere in the world by

plane.

Where in the world would you most like to visit? Thai-

land!

If you had one message, what would you most like to teach

your students? Don’t let anything, including yourself, stand

in the way of your dreams becoming reality.

What life experience made you want to become a teacher?

My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Diamond, changed the way I

looked at learning. Since then I always want to learn more

and I want learning to be enjoyable for other children.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU, MR. MICHAEL GILLEN, P.E.

Interviewed by fifth graders: Logan Key and Ben Reese How long and what grades have you been teaching? I have taught physical

education for two years at two schools.

Do you have a family? Yes, I am married and my wife is a third grade teacher

in MCPS. She did her student teaching here at WLES several years ago. We

do not have any children yet.

What is your cultural background and where were you born?

I was born in Wilmington ,Delaware and I am of Irish descent.

What college did you graduate from? What was your major area of studies?

I graduated from Towson University. I majored in PE, grades K-12.

What do you most like to do when you are not working? I like to play sports,

watch sports, and walk my dog.

Favorites: Food: Pepperoni pizza. Color: Green Movie: “Ironman”

Book: “Harry Potter 6” Actor: Will Smith Vacation: Las Vegas

Holiday: I like every holiday!

What do you like best about teaching at WLES? I like being a P.E. teacher. It

is the best job in the world.

GETTING TO KNOW MR. ABNER BAEZ, MUSIC TEACHER

He has been teaching music for 17 years. He is married and has two chil-

dren. He was born in Puerto Rico and is Latino. He went to college in North

Texas and majored in music. In his free time, he likes to play the saxo-

phone. His Favorites: Food –rice and beans. Color: blue

Vacation: Puerto Rico Holiday: Christmas

Mr. Baez most likes seeing his kids progressing with music. His dream closest

to his heart is living for one whole century. (100 years old!) He would like to
