The Dolphin Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. By Connor Caudill Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929. When he was 15, he skipped two grades and entered college. Isn’t that awesome? He became a doctor of philosophy. In 1955 he support- ed Rosa Parks when she refused to give up her seat on a bus for a white person. He said to not use violence, but to boy- cott using the buses. This is called non - violent resistance. Dr. King believed this was the way to get things to change. In 1963 King led a march in Washington D. C. to get jobs for people of all races. This is when he gave his famous “I Have a Dream’’ speech. Once again, he said to be peaceful and be for change. Dr. King was killed in 1968. He was a very good man who helped all people and that is why we honor him still today. So, did you know that Lake Street is a Four Star School?!?!?! Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929. When he was 15, he skipped two grades and entered college. Isn’t that awesome? He became a doctor of philosophy. In 1955 he support-ed Rosa Parks when she refused to give

Do you know about P.O.P.P.?

If you don’t, I’m here to tell you more about it. You should have gotten a pamphlet telling you a little bit about P.O.P.P. and what it is. The pamphlet also had an important permission slip attached to it. To enter your poem or art you had to fill out some important information and have your parent/ guardian sign it. After that you should

first know that P.O.P.P. stands for Power of Poetry Project. You should also know it’s basically a poetry pro-ject where you write a poem, type it on the computer, print it out, and then send it into P.O.P.P.. You can also pub-lish your art along with your poem once you send you poem and or art to the people from P.O.P.P., they will look over the poems and art and then de-cide the winners. Once they have the

winners there will be a Lyceum in the spring time. Make sure if you’re a win-ner or just want to go and see who wins come to Lake Street. The date has not yet been announced, but listen for it on announcements or look for it in the newsletter. For each grade level you can win at 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and honorable mention. You will receive rewards for all those win-ning spots!

Chinese New Year is a time to celebrate life and all the good things. It gives people a chance to get rid of all the bad things that happened the year before. In the Chinese Zodiac, the Dragon is in the fifth and strongest position. The Dragon is this year’s Zodiac sign. People who are born un-der the sign of the Dragon are bound to be passionate, brave, and are confident in themselves.

With fireworks, family reun-ions, and feasts, Chinese

New Year is the longest and most important celebration for millions of people around the world.

Children’s parents throw dumpling making parties, stuff red envelopes with money, and decorate the front doors of their homes.

They clean their homes at the start of this 15 day cel-ebration and hang red lan-terns at the finish. In 2012, Chinese New Year began on January 23.

Others keep it simple and spend this holiday with friends at a restaurant or watching the dragons dance around their city or town.

Chinese New Year is a fun and important holiday that is cele-brated all around the world.

Mrs. Ciochina doesn’t look too happy with her twin sister, Nellie Sweet-water!

Nellie caused quite a stir during the Awards Ceremony on Wednes-day!

She rode her horse, Penny, right into the Lake Street Gym while Mrs. Ciochina was busy dashing about the hallways looking for her and trying to keep her out

of mischief!

Thanks for the visit, Nel-lie! We hope to see you (and maybe even Penny) around Lake Street again soon!

Movie Review: Soul Surfer By: Elise Hochbaum

Hey,! Have you ever seen the movie Soul Surfer? Well if not read this! Soul Surfer is a movie about a girl named Betha-ny Hamilton. She loved surfing so she went surf-ing with her friend. They went really far out of the water. Then suddenly a shark bit her arm off! Her friend’s brother called the hospital. Bethany’s dad was already at the hospital for surgery. When the doctor told

Bethany’s dad that Betha-ny had the shark attack he freaked out and tried to leave. But the doctor wouldn’t let him leave until he was finished with his surgery. When Bethany was in the hospital she was flipping through the channels on T.V. and all the channels were talking about her in the shark at-tack. Then her friend best friend walked in and said the shark attack is almost on every channel. When

Bethany got out of the hospital she decided to surf again. Then she en-tered in a surfing compe-tition and at the very last wave she was almost out of time! If you think that Soul Surfer is good so far, you will have to watch and find out what happens next!

More Book Bites By Alexis Hernandez

I asked a couple Lake Street Dolphins “What’s your most favorite book? Can you tell me a little bit about it?” Madison Kennedy “My favorite book is 11 Birth-days . This book is about this one girl named Amanda and this one boy nemed Leo. An old lady cast a spell on them so that they would have to spend every birthday together. Eventually, they did not spend their 11th birthday together. They have to keep repeating the eleventh birthday over and over and over again. Would they ever get out of their 11th birthday? Read the book and find out! Chloe Gomez The Popularity Papers is my favorite book series. The books are about two girls named Lydia and Julie. The girls make a plan to gain popu-larity by doing things other girls do. They face adventures along the way. I wonder if they ever gain “popularity”?
