The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Emmanuel Presbyterian Church opens wide her doors and offers welcome to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are spiritually weak and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come.

Prelude Dr. Bogum ParkI Know Whom I Have Believed—D. W. Whittle & J. McGranahan

I know not why God’s wondrous graceTo me He hath made known,

Nor why, unworthy, Christ in loveRedeemed me for His own.

I know not how this saving faithTo me He did impart,

Nor how believing in His WordWrought peace within my heart.I know not how the Spirit moves,

Convincing men of sin,Revealing Jesus through the Word,

Creating faith in Him.

WORDS OF PREPARATION/SILENCE Galatians 2:11-21 All scripture passages printed in back of bulletin. COLLECT OF THE DAY

O God, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that, ever mindful of your final judgment, we may be stirred up to holiness of living here and dwell with you in perfect joy hereafter; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

I know not what of good or illMay be reserved for me,

Of weary ways or golden days,Before His face I see.

I know not when my Lord may come,At night or noonday fair,

Nor if I walk the vale with Him,Or meet Him in the air.

But “I know Whom I have believed,And am persuaded that He is ableTo keep that which I’ve committed

Unto Him against that day.”

Leader: Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; People: Unite my heart to fear your name. I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,

And I will glorify your name forever. For great is your steadfast love toward me; You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol. O God, insolent men have risen up against me; A band of ruthless men seeks my life, and they do not set you before them. But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, Slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. Turn to me and be gracious to me; Give your strength to your servant, and save the son of your maidservant. Show me a sign of your favor, that those who hate me may see and be put to shame Because you, LORD, have helped me and comforted me.

Hear my cry, O God, attend unto my prayer; From the end of the earth will I cry unto Thee,When my heart is overwhelmed, Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.For Thou hast been a shelter for meAnd a strong tower from my enemy.

When I cry unto God then shall my enemies turn back; This I know, for God is for me.In God will I praise His word, In God I have put my trust,Let my mouth be filled with praise,And with Thy honor all the day. Amen

The Service of Response

CORPORATE CONFESSION OF FAITH The Nicene Creed

Unison: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made: Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost, of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge the quick and the dead: Whose kingdom shall have no end.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Lessonsthe Old testament lessOn Isaiah 44:6-8

6 Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:“I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.7 Who is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before me,since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen.8 Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me? There is no Rock; I know not any.”

the gOsPel lessOn Matthew 13:24-30,36-43

24 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, 25 but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. 26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. 27 And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

36 Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.” 37 He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, 42 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

THE SERMON LESSON Galatians 2:11-21

11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party. 13 And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”

15 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; 16 yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

17 But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! 18 For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. 19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.

It is a tool to knit us together throughout the church year. While we would encourage the use of TGWH in its entirety, you are encouraged to adapt the offerings to your particular circumstances. The prayer is taken from “Lutheran Worship” and the psalm readings are taken from the “Book of Common Prayer” and the daily readings are from “The Daily Office.”

PLEASE BE IN PRAYER FOR:- Pray for Cathy and Ken Campbell as they mourn the loss of Cathy’s mom, Marjorie. Praise God that

Cathy was able to be on the phone with her as she passed, and that Marjorie was strong in faith. Pray for comfort for Cathy and her brother, David, as well as for the rest of the family.

- Carol Crill is still struggling with seizures and unstable blood pressure. Please pray for wisdom for the doctors to find a solution that will control her seizures and stabilize her blood pressure.

- Pray for our missionaries in Central Asia. COVID-19 is overwhelming local healthcare infrastructure, and their government now recommends riding out the illness at home. Our missionaries assume they will eventually contract the virus and develop immunity, and their middle son presently has symptoms. Pray for their safety and ability to continue their work.

- Please be in prayer for John Ellis, who had a memory lapse episode. An MRI did not show the cause, but John is seeing a neurologist to try to find the cause of these episodes. Pray for healing and for the doctors to figure out what is happening.

- Please pray for JD Stewart and his family, as JD’s father died recently. JD was able to see him in Michigan before he passed. Please pray for the family as they mourn.

- Pray for Sula Ly’s mother, who tested positive for COVID-19 while in India. She needs to return home to Indonesia. Please pray for her healing, and that she would be able to get back home soon.

- Pray that Cathy Campell’s wound would continue to heal.

- Please pray that the Lord will contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus, providing wisdom for all the decision-makers and caregivers, and healing for those affected by the disease.

- Pray for Susan Ellis and Deborah Altsman’s friend, Maryann Bird, and her husband, Johnny. He had to be tested for COVID-19 recently, and while he tested negative, his nighttime caregiver tested positive. Pray for Johnny’s continued safety, as well as for Maryann and their daughter, Lori, who are unable to visit Johnny in assisted living.
