    Why Water Features

    Large and Unique Residential

When it comes to planning a vacation for a little rest and relaxation, it’s no secret that water is the most

popular destination point. People flock to the coasts, plan a fishing trip months in advance, or look

forward to their upcoming cruise with increased anticipation. Unfortunately, vacations are over far too

quickly. But add a unique water feature to residential outdoor living spaces and people can enjoy the

pleasures of a waterfront vacation year-round in their own backyard.

    Corporate Offices

A well-designed landscape that includes a water feature helps to blend corporate

buildings into their surroundings. The sound of running water in the landscape

provides soothing comfort during a busy work day, helping to relieve stress and

making a memorable impact on visitors and employees alike.

    Zoos and Aquariums

Ecology is becoming more prevalent in the

teaching environment because it focuses on

the relationship between organisms and their

    environment. By researching the environment,

we better understand how humans and animals

interact with and impact each other and the

world around them. Water plays a critical role in

the study of ecology, representing the common

denominator for both species, as we all need

    water for survival.

    Why Water Features

    Parks and Recreation

Education is key in most parks and recreational areas

and a strong focus is on creating awareness for water

conservation. Water is our most precious resource and a

top concern throughout the world. The more the public

understands about this prized natural resource, the better

equipped they are to make smart choices regarding water

use and conservation. Water features in public places help

to show water as it was intended – clean and healthy, giving

    life to its surroundings.

    Health, Healing, and Special Needs

Water features provide soothing sights and sounds that can improve physical and mental well-being.

“Hospital patients who have a view of natural landscapes recover faster from surgery and require less

pain medication. In addition, heart rate, blood pressure, and other measures return to normal levels

more quickly when people view natural rather than urban landscapes after a stressful experience.”

(The Sustainable Sites Initiative. Standards & Guidelines: Preliminary Report.)

    Sustainability and Rainwater Harvesting

Earth is known as the Blue Planet for a reason; it’s no surprise that water is a dominant part of our everyday lives. Capturing,

filtering, and re-using rainwater is becoming increasingly important in efforts to conserve water. Unfortunately, traditional

ways of harvesting rainwater do not add beauty or value to a landscape. The Aquascape Rainwater Harvesting System

changes that by adding the beauty of a water feature to a revolutionary system for capturing, filtering and re-using rainwater,

while at the same time aiding in the management of stormwater run-off.

PRIMAVERA URBANA - Retail and Wildlife HabitatVillavicencio, Columbia

The largest water feature installed by Aquascape Construction is located in Villavicencio,

Colombia. Our crew was contacted to construct a truly amazing, interactive water feature

at Primavera Urbana, an all-new shopping center complex with office space and

restaurants. Located at the base of the Andes Mountains, the area experiences high

precipitation and ground water challenges. Aquascape Construction incorporated a

sustainable system that pumps surrounding ground water into large ecosystem ponds,

waterfalls, fountains, and lush plants that were installed to look like the jungle is cutting

through the shopping center. These features then flow into a natural river system.

Massive waterfalls, created with boulders from the adjacent mountains, flank each side of

the staircase that leads up to the shopping center. Visitors to the shopping center enjoy

interacting with this expansive water feature that amazes the eye at every viewing point.

CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF SONOMA COUNTY - Award Winning, EducationalSanta Rosa, California

An interactive, aquatic ecosystem provides outdoor fun and playful exploration at the Children’s

Museum of Sonoma County. The goal of this waterfall and stream system was to connect children

and adults to water in their environment by replicating the Russian River watershed. The water

feature captures and filters rainwater while attracting local wildlife such as butterflies, dragonflies,

frogs, and more. The entire stream is recirculated through a large wetland filtration system,

showcasing the importance of native wetlands to the health of local aquatic ecosystems.

  • PHIPPS CONSERVATORY - Center for Sustainable LandscapesPittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The new Center for Sustainable Landscapes at Phipps Conservatory is the

first building to meet four of the highest green certifications including LEED®

Platinum, Living Building Challenge, Four Stars Sustainable SITES Initiative™,

and WELL Building Platinum project. Aquascape Construction was called on

to construct a viable and sustainable rainwater harvesting solution. Water is

collected from the upper campus, off the roofs of the Center for Sustainable

Landscapes, and another nearby building. Collected rainwater is then directed

to a stormwater lagoon, designed to fluctuate with storm events and also serve

as a decorative element next to the Center.

Skimmers clean debris from the lagoon’s surface while the wetland filtration

system cleans and polishes the stormwater through stone beds by using a

multi-staged filtration approach of suspended solid removal, biological filtration,

and phytoremediation using native wetland plantings. A 65,000 gallon storage

system was installed along with a 23,000 gallon sub-surface reservoir to handle

overflow. This system allows Phipps Conservatory to drastically reduce its

    dependence on municipal water.

  • GOODWIN RESIDENCE - Million Dollar BackyardCrown Point, Indiana

A homeowner in Crown Point, Indiana desired a large

and unique water feature to run through his expansive

property. Fifteen hundred tons of limestone, sandstone,

and outcropping stones were used to create an

impressive pond, waterfall, and stream system with a

water flow of approximately 120,000 gallons per hour.

The feature begins with two large waterfalls, one with a

bog filter, that empty into an ecosystem pond. From there,

split streams wind their way through the property before

emptying into a 50,000 gallon reservoir.

PECK FARM - Interactive and EducationalGeneva, Illinois

Hitchcock Designs contacted Aquascape Construction to design and build an 80-foot

long interactive stream that runs through the outdoor educational area of Peck Farm

in Geneva, Illinois. Children enjoy taking off their shoes and walking through the water

while they explore the many features of this park. The focal point is the water feature

that includes a series of fountain jets that are activated when pressing a button on a

wooden pedestal. The feature was designed to replicate what you see in an Illinois river

area and includes a beaver dam with den, bird footprints, and a bird nest. The stream

and educational areas are a highlight for families during the summer months.

GLACIER CANYON LODGE - Golf CourseWisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Aquascape Construction installed a half-mile long waterfall and stream with a series of

cascades and rapids that replicate what you might see in the wilderness. Carved into the

bottom of a canyon in the Wisconsin Dells, the water feature cuts through the golf course

and covers a 90-foot elevation change from beginning to end, where it empties into a

quarter-acre ecosystem pond. Rainwater naturally collects in the feature and flows into

the main pond, providing efficient management of

stormwater run-off. Over 5,000 tons of stone from

the surrounding property was used to create this

stunning feature. The waterfalls are easily visible

from several vantage points of the golf course, and

every view was carefully considered when designing

this amazing feature to be enjoyed by visitors and

    golfers alike.

  • ORCHARD VALLEY GOLF COURSE - Fox Valley Park DistrictAurora, Illinois

A deteriorating pond and waterfall at the entrance to the Orchard Valley Golf

Course community in Aurora was in desperate need of a renovation. The

waterfalls were constructed of concrete and couldn’t stand up to the freeze

and thaw conditions of Illinois. A new rubber liner was installed for the waterfall

pools and natural outcropping stones replaced the fake stones. The result is a

beautifully impressive eight-foot tall waterfall with an expanse of 60 feet.

AQUASCAPE INC. - AqualandSt. Charles, Illinois

A 250' x 90' ecosystem pond with waterfalls graces the front of the Aquascape corporate office. Known as our

Signature Pond, the feature was created to replicate the Illinois watershed. In addition, the feature includes a

stormwater management plan that uses run-off as an asset on the property. Rainwater flows down the large,

sloping green roof and into a nearby retention pond, where it is then pumped into the expansive water feature.

Two waterfalls exist at the north end of the feature; one of which is 10-feet high with a grotto for behind-the-falls

viewing. The waterfalls cascade into a 10-foot deep ecosystem pond with an array of beautiful koi and

waterlilies. The water slows down as it traverses limestone outcroppings, located near a constructed wetland

filter that aids in the health and cleanliness of the pond. The water then flows over a vanishing waterfalls system

before emptying into a reservoir where it’s recirculated to repeat the journey.

    ESPLANADEDowners Grove, Illinois

Located in Downers Grove, the Esplanade

encompasses a variety of business and office

spaces, along with restaurants and a hotel. But

the star attraction of this complex is the highly

visible 1000-foot long pond, waterfall, and fountain

system that Aquascape Construction installed in

1998. A 110-foot wide waterfall was created for

employees and visitors to enjoy. Fifty fountains are

located in the pond areas and a large paver patio

with outdoor seating provides prime vistas of the

feature. Additionally, the expansive waterfalls face

    atrium windows for indoor viewing.

  • Milwaukee is positioning itself as a worldwide

leader in fresh water research. In order to

attract global players in the market, the Reed

Street Yards office park was created from

old warehouses. A request was made to

replicate a river and delta in order to educate

visitors on the hazards of urban environments

    on water quality. Aquascape Construction

    installed an Aquascape wetland filtration

system with a waterfall course that runs

through the plaza before emptying into a

    10,000 gallon sub-surface reservoir. Atop

the reservoir is a replica of a delta. Water

from the Milwaukee River is run through an

    ultra-filtration process, fills a 5,000 gallon

stainless steel tank, and is then guided

through the wetland filter where it continues

    its journey down the waterfall.

    MCCANNON FARMBig Rock, Illinois

An existing farm pond was in dire need of a transformation to remove a heavy build-up

of organic sediment and debris. Debris was robbing the pond of oxygen and chemicals

had been used in an attempt to rectify the situation. Aquascape Construction employed

new technology for renovating manmade ponds that follows an ecosystem approach

for water feature health and maintenance. A large waterfall was added to the farm pond

to adequately circulate and filter the water. Pumps, filters, and circulation jets were

incorporated to the existing pond to create a skimming effect to remove debris from the

surface of the water. An Aquascape wetland filter further cleans the water.

  • VICTORY JUNCTIONRandleman, North Carolina

Victory Junction provides a camp experience at no cost for

children with serious medical conditions. Founded by Adam

Petty, son of racing car legend Richard Petty, the property’s

large pond was in need of beautification. Smith Turf

coordinated the project and called upon Aquascape

Construction to carve a large and winding waterfall along

the natural slope adjacent to the pond. Three hundred tons

of rock, including boulders from the site, was placed to

create a narrow waterfall at the top, which then twists and

turns into a much wider waterfall at the bottom before

emptying into the existing pond. Richard Petty had always

envisioned a waterfall here and enjoys seeing the children

marvel at the falls during their stay at the camp.

LINCOLN PARK ZOO - Habitat ProtectionChicago, Illinois

Aquascape Construction installed a variety of water features at the historical Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. An

existing swan pond with hundreds of visiting water fowl was experiencing a decline in water quality due to a

high level of waste. A large skimmer and wetland filter break down nitrogenous waste while circulation jets

add much-needed oxygen by regularly turning over the water. A 20-foot Pondless® Waterfall was installed in

another location as a decorative element to the park. Additionally, fountain rocks were added to the school

bus drop-off and pick-up location for children to enjoy.

    SHEDD AQUARIUMChicago, Illinois

Aquascape has installed three water features at the

Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, the first of which is

located near the outdoor terrace by Lake Michigan. An

80-foot waterfall was built to replicate a watershed that

can be replenished with rainwater from the property.

The self-sustaining water feature provides a riparian

zone, which is instrumental in water quality for surface

    run-off.

Another waterfall was created at the museum’s grand

entrance. Constructed of Missouri moss rock, the

expansive set of waterfalls greets visitors upon arrival.

    Waterfalls cascade into a 10,000 gallon sub-surface

reservoir before recirculating up and over the falls to

    repeat the journey.

A third, smaller Pondless Waterfall is located near an

outdoor pavilion at the Shedd Aquarium.

  • BREVARD COUNTY ZOO - Tapir ExhibitMelbourne, Florida

The Brevard County Zoo in Melbourne, Florida had a messy

situation on their hands and needed an effective solution.

Tapirs are considered one of the messiest animals at the zoo.

Part of the tapir exhibit includes a lagoon where the animals

move their bowels, creating a lot of muck and sediment

at the bottom. The zoo had to continually drain the pool

and physically remove the waste. Aquascape Construction

created a skimmer system to pre-filter the floating debris.

A wetland filter with aquatic plants provided much-needed

cleansing of the water. Additional pumps were added to send

water through a series of pipes that behave as air jets on the

bottom of the pond so that tapir waste is pushed through

the pre-filter. This solution greatly reduces the maintenance

needed to keep the tapir exhibit clean.

BOERNER BOTANICAL GARDEN - Stormwater ManagementMilwaukee, Wisconsin

An Aquascape Rainwater Harvesting System with a decorative stream and waterfall was installed at Boerner

Botanical Garden as an alternate solution to managing stormwater to protect natural waterways. This grant

project was constructed to capture stormwater run-off from the roof of the large garden building and the

nearby parking lot. A section of roof run-off is stored in a 3,000 gallon sub-surface reservoir where the water is

accessible to irrigate the surrounding landscape and garden beds. Additional stormwater from the parking lot

and roof is directed to an Aquascape wetland filter before flowing down a stream and waterfall system into a

20,000 gallon underground reservoir, which is also used to irrigate the surrounding gardens. Bog and aquatic

plants in the stream and waterfall enhance the visitor’s experience to the botanical garden.

  • FRESHWATER PLAZAMilwaukee, Wisconsin

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District and an architect from the University

of Wisconsin called upon Aquascape Construction to create a green infrastructure

for capturing rainwater run-off from a newly constructed building on the south

side of Milwaukee. A series of rectilinear pools was paired with a wetland filter to

manage and detoxify the stormwater run-off. Numerous spillways discharge the

water into a series of cascading pools, adding beauty to this urban style feature

which stores up to 30,000 gallons of filtered rainwater in a sub-surface reservoir.

New technology is connected to a weather-based radar system to be alerted

of an incoming rainstorm. The system automatically drains the reservoir into the

storm system to make room for the new rain. Managing stormwater this way is

more sustainable with the water being recirculated throughout the decorative

    water feature for further filtration.
