President’s LetterHappy New Year to everyone. I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and holiday break.

It has been a summer of extremes from weeks without rain north of Auckland to snow in the mountains of Queenstown and Wanaka. During our holiday at Omaha Beach water supply trucks were among the most common vehicles on the roads. I

confess we were regular customers!

The Club closes for most of January each year to give the management and staff a well-earned break and to enable refurbishment and maintenance to be carried out. While the Club’s re-opening day in January will be reviewed after completion of the new Bankside Extension project, the closure this year saw major works in the kitchen being undertaken where a new hardwearing fibreglass floor was put in, requiring all the equipment to be removed and reinstated. The front office and reception area was also completely re-modelled and members will notice the new layout when entering the Club from Princes Street.

May I say a special welcome back for 2017 to the 77 new members who joined the Club in 2016. We look forward to your participation at Club events and hope you become active users of the Club. It was especially pleasing that well over half were younger members and 20% were women, which are groups the Membership Committee is putting a special focus on.

Some of the outstanding Club events during summer months are the visits to Auckland’s exceptional sculpture collections and exhibitions. This summer the Club has arranged visits to Alan Gibbs’ “The Farm” on the shores of the Kaipara Harbour, to John Gow and his wife Jo’s property at Connells Bay on Waiheke Island, and to the “Headland Sculpture on the Gulf” exhibition on Waiheke Island which opened on 26 January. Having been to all three on previous occasions I cannot recommend these Club events highly enough. At the recent Gala Opening of the “Headland” exhibition, Northern Club Art Committee member Sir James Wallace described this year’s

exhibition as one of the best he’s seen there. I urge you to go with our groups to these three special venues and enjoy the superb sculptures, the world class scenery and the company of fellow club members. You are also welcome to take family and friends.

We also look forward to a new member of the Club’s management team joining us this month. Mrs Cathy Horton takes on the Member Liaison role held by Mrs Jocelyn Morgan who retired at the end of 2016. A profile appears later in this Diary. Please introduce yourself to Cathy when you get the chance.

Finally on behalf of all Club members I offer our warmest congratulations to our members who were recognised in the New Year’s Honours for their outstanding contributions. Club members were prominent recipients this New Year, including two of the country’s new Knights – Professor Sir Richard Faull and a past President of the Club, Sir David Williams QC. The full list of Club members honoured are:

Richard Aitken, Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and engineering.

Peter Kiely, Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to New Zealand's interests in the Pacific and the law.

MNZM

Alan Dormer, Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the law

Derek Firth, Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to arbitration and education.

QSO

Judge Charles Blackie VRD, Queen’s Service Order for services to the judiciary and the community.

I look forward to seeing you at the Club during the year.

Derek Nolan QC President

After the sculpture walk, enjoy a selection of gourmet platters in the marquee before returning to Auckland on the 9pm ferry.$60 per person includes transfers on Waiheke, platters, entrance fee and welcome drink.
