At 6 am the boys were woken up and had a team build on the field this was followed by a tasty breakfast prepared by peppers & Pans - I was amazed that we managed to feed over 200 boys in the space of thirty minutes. Meanwhile the extremely strong wind had played havoc with a number of the tents and repairs and rebuilds were the order of the morning. At 8h30 the staff from Spirit of Adventure arrived and briefed the boys on the programme for the day. The group was divided into teams and they rotated through the following activities: mind muncher, various leadership exercises, pool Olympics, and time trials and tug-o-war championships. All activities were specifically designed to enhance group dynamics and team work. Lunch time was a much needed break in the busy Spirit of Adventure programme and Peppers & Pans came through with a super tasty chicken burger and chips. After lunch the boys continued with the rotation and finally wrapped up with a feedback session. The afternoon was then dedicated to a tour of the school and some much needed down time; but our enthusiastic Grade 8s soon split into two distinct groups - the swimmers and the football players. After another tasty dinner provided the boys were allowed time to reflect on the day’s activities and feedback to the prefects and mentors. Soon enough Sunday morning came and the task of packing up the camp. As is the DHS tradition now the boys moved off to rehearse their bell ringing ceremony under the watchful gaze of Mr Cele.

Here are a few of the boys’ reflections on the camp: “I enjoyed the camp very much - it was such a bonding experience for us. My favourite part was when we did swimming and the other water activities. I like how we were taught to work together as a team and how to work on our leadership skills. The food was amazing and I really enjoyed the burger and chips.” “The Grade 8 camp was a lot of fun. The highlights for me were the Spirit of Adventure activities and swimming. The food was delicious but I really enjoyed Saturday’s dessert. My highlight was war cry. I lost my voice proudly showcasing DHS’s reputation of being the loudest and proudest School in Durban.” “The camp was amazing. On the first day we met with the Mentors and I made new friends while talking in our groups. The things I liked about the camp was how I made friends, learned about helping other people, the activities and especially swimming.” “Where to start? Camp was awesome and I would like to thank Mr Lewis and the other staff for the planning that went into it. My favourite part was setting up the tent as this brought us together as a group. Having Spirit of Adventure visit us was a blast. We really had a great weekend of fun activities and delicious food.” “The camp out was an excellent idea for the Grade 8s to get to know one another. We got to eat and sleep together and got to interact on another level. It was very hot and everyone enjoyed the swimming. I also enjoyed it when we were allowed to play late nights sports of our choice. Everyone was very excited for the braai on Friday night. We got to wake up very early and go to sleep late.” I would like to thank the Prefects, Mentors and RCL

After a number of briefings earlier in the week a very excited group of grade 8’s converged on Top Field at the end of school on Friday. In their briefings the goals and aims of the camp were explained and I am glad to report that our new crop of grade 8’s took their planning stage to the next level. After an initial briefing the important skills of team work and communication were tested when the boys erected their tents. For some this was the first time doing this and it was rewarding to see the boys helping each other. In addition to the Prefects, Mentors and RCL a number of Matrics also came to assist. After this the Mentors were given the opportunity to do ice-breakers to make the boys feel at home. Once the icebreakers were completed the boys were given the opportunity to create teams and play touch, football and cricket. Their enthusiasm for the games was extremely high until they saw the smoke from the braai stands. In true DHS form the boys cooked up a storm and it was again encouraging to see boys taking the lead and working together to make sure everyone’s meat was braaied to perfection. The process of braaing and eating was interspersed with more games. At about 8 pm the braaing finally finished and the boys were taken to the main field stands for War Cry. Ably lead by the War Cry Leaders the Grade 8s once again showed their excitement and enthusiasm for their new School, and quickly learned the words that will resound throughout the school for the next five years. By the end of the session there were more than one or two boys with hoarse voices. Then it was lights out in preparation for a busy day ahead.
