The Dem Newsletter Week 7- Friday 2 September 2016 LMBR goes Live!!!! As mentioned in previous newsletters, North Sydney Demonstration School is migrating to a new system for managing finance and student administration (LMBR). This system will be in place from next Monday, 5 September. All the office staff are excited to be part of a new system but will be in need of time to adjust to a new way of doing things related to students and student payments. If you are making a payment in these first few weeks, the office will take down all your details (either in person or over the phone) and will process payments later in the day. A receipt will be sent home with your child within three working days. Please remember that POP is still unable to be used for the rest of this Term. Refer to page 3 for a reminder on payment options. We wish the office ladies good luck in their training and thank our parents/carers for your continued patience. Late Arrival to School Change of Procedure As part of the new student management system, students arriving late to school will receive an electronic late slip from the front office when they arrive to school late. They will then take this slip to class and give it to their teacher. All late students must go to the office FIRST, get the electronic slip and then proceed to class. Book Week Authors/Illustrators Last week we welcomed Tohby Riddle to the school to present to students in Kindergarten and Yrs 4, 5 & 6 and this week we welcomed Gus Gordon who presented to students in Yrs 1, 2 & 3. Both gentlemen engaged the students with storytelling and illustration tips. Thank you to Mrs Alice Bennett for keeping Book Week alive and interesting. K-2 Disco What a great night last Friday! Thank you to our P&C and all the parents who have volunteered to help out and make the disco such a successful event! Thanks also to Vanessa Horler for coordinating the event and for the wonderful decorating of the Hall! The Dem welcomes Dr Maker, Dr Zimmerman and Randy Pease Dr June Maker, Dr Bob Zimmerman and Randy Pease will be visiting the Dem from Tuesday 6 to Tuesday 13 September to continue their work with students in Years 2- 6 as they engage in real world problem solving. During their time with us Dr Maker and her associates would like to conduct interviews with parents or carers regarding their child’s experience with the REAPS problem solving process. The interview is voluntary and a letter outlining the questions was sent home with your child earlier this week. If you would like to be involved and have misplaced the letter, please see page 5 of this newsletter. If you would like to discuss the questions with your child prior to the interview so that you feel more informed about what REAPS looks like in the classroom, then this is OK too. Thank you to those parents who have registered their interest to participate in the interview. What’s On? National Asthma Week 1-7 September Become a Better Breather National

Asthma Week coincides with the beginning of spring - pollens are a known trigger for

asthma Sections of the Asthma Australia website that can help with asthma

management include

Take the Asthma Control Test to see if you could make improvements to help your child become a better breather

Manage allergies often linked with asthma including allergic rhinitis (hayfever)

Did you know 90 of people with asthma use their medications incorrectly

Check your childrsquos technique to see if they are getting full benefit from their medication

Regular review of your childrsquos asthma with your GP and pharmacist will help them to become a better

breather Need help with your childrsquos asthma Contact our Asthma Assist line on 1800 ASTHMA (1800 278

462) and talk to one of our friendly Asthma Health Professionals

Asthma Management in Winter and Spring

Asthma is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions affecting 1 in every 10 children in Australia

Emergency admissions and hospitalisations peak during the winter for children with asthma and flare-ups are

often more prevalent during the winter and spring Good management however can help children with asthma

and their carers get through this tricky time of year with more confidence

Here are a few tips for parents and carers

make an annual appointment for an asthma review by your childrsquos doctor

update your childrsquos Asthma Plan at the start of each year and provide a copy to the school

talk to the teacher and other key staff about your childrsquos asthma ndash their usual triggers symptoms and medication

provide an in-date blue reliever puffer and spacer for use at school (clearly labelled with childrsquos name and date of birth)

help your child understand the importance of taking their preventer medication every day as prescribed

ask their doctor about having a flu vaccination

encourage hand washing and covering onersquos mouth when coughing to help prevent the spread of germs

School sports and asthma

Physical activity acts as a major trigger in up to 90 of people with asthma Exercise Induced

Bronchoconstriction (EIB) commonly known as exercise induced asthma is the temporary narrowing of the

lower airways occurring after vigorous exercise People with poorly controlled asthma are at a higher risk of

EIB due to the sensitive nature of their airways This may result in episodes of coughing wheezing a feeling

of chest tightnessdiscomfort or shortness of breath often worsening 5-10 minutes after exercise

To ensure your child can safely participate in sports and exercise at school the first step is to make sure their

asthma is well controlled If your child is requiring their reliever

medication more than twice a week it is a good idea to see

their GP for a review as this may indicate poorly controlled

asthma Also provide the school with an Asthma Plan from the

doctor particularly before a sport carnival or excursion The

plan will include any instructions for EIB (eg use of their

asthma reliever prior to physical activity) You can help them

check that they are using their asthma devices correctly by

watching our videos on the Asthma Australia website

Asthma app is now available free at the iTunes store

(Android coming soon)
