DESCRIPTION

Part 2 of the series "The Health and Illnesses of a data center". This deals with busway for power distribution to the server racks. Many types of electrical distribution busway systems. There can be many different product limitations due to design and maintenance considerations. The different types systems discussed are: 1. continuous, plug-in busway, 2. sandwich Busway. Primary differences such as hot swappable (the ability of engaging an electrical device while the system is energized) are available on certain products. The systems such as Starline Track Busway meet the safety and the usability criteria for data centers. Easy to use, Safe, simple to install, and maintenance is not required. The best in all categories.

Page 3: The day the music stopped, the health and illnesses of a data center, part 2 busway

It has been said “what can go wrong will go wrong”

•Costs and risks of installing power cables (whips)

in a live data center environment

•Costs and risks of installed busway and installing traditional busway

• Space restrictions, access easily blocked

• Difficulty adding and removing the plugs

• Poor connection of plug contact to the conductor surface, positional contact

of contact blade against flat surface

• Time for the installation is slower, due to weight, tightening of joints,

corrections

• What could go wrong? Loose Joints, heat build-up creating fire hazard, ,

workmanship, flaws, missed items during maintenance checks,

difficulty of putting plug on and off of the system

Common Types of Busway / Busduct

Air-insulated

Feeder Bus – wrong choice for Rack power

Sandwich Busway – requires maintenance –

bolted joints, plug connection is a positional

contact of flat blade against a flat surface.

Difficult and time consuming to put plugs on.

Many companies require the system to be

turned off when putting plugs on for safety

purposes.

Cast Resin – much improved conductor

insulation but same maintenance and plug

connection limitations as Sandwich Busway.

Both Sandwitch and Cast Resin products

best applications are as feeder systems

where power supplied over distance with

limited connections.

Mounting positions easily blocked by anything. A bracket, or any physical obstruction prevents mounting of plug-in devices Maintenance is required on the feeder bus

systems. Fire hazard if have loose joints

Improving the Design and Performance of the Data Center

The ability to accelerate the changes without creating errors has huge advantages

Introducing systems that have beneficial performance and eliminate the maintenance difficulties and warranty issues.

To Be or Not To Be . . . Do decisions create honey or do you get stung?

Page 19: The day the music stopped, the health and illnesses of a data center, part 2 busway

Efficiencies can be added to the overall designs – the technology is available to simplify the architecture

Overhead mounting– either

access slot facing side-ways

or access slot facing down.

Under Floor – either access slot

facing side-ways or access slot

facing down.

Structured Power. All products have strengths and weaknesses.

Of Starline’s many strengths – The most important is the reliability

of the Joint construction. Starline has never had a loose joint on

this system.

Helps to eliminate Fire Hazards caused by loose wires

Operational Temperatures to 70 deg. C
