Objective
You will:

evaluate internet sources.
Show me by:
– Summarizing the main points in your
Cornell notes.
What is The CRAAP Test?
A way to evaluate internet sources.
Currency
Relevance
Authority
Accuracy
Purpose
What is Currency?
Currency deals with WHEN the
information on the site was
published.
– Out of date information is BAD.
What is Currency?
When was the info published or
posted?
Has it been revised or updated?
Is the info current or out-of-date?
Do the links function?
What is Relevance?
Relevance determines whether the information is related to the matter at hand.
What is Relevance?
Does the info answer your research questions?
Is the info at the appropriate level?
Who is the intended audience?
Have you looked at a variety of sources?
What is Authority?
The author must be a reliable
source with PROVED expertise in
the area.
What is Authority?
Who is the author, publisher or
sponsor?
Is there contact information for the
author or organization?
What is the domain of the site?
– .com, .org, .edu, .gov, etc…
What is Accuracy?
Accuracy means true and correct
What is Accuracy?
Where does the info come from?
Can you verify the info in another source?
Does the website language seem unbiased and free from emotion?
What is Purpose?
Everything is written for a reason.
The author’s purpose can have an impact on the reliability or appropriateness of the website.
What is Purpose?
Does the info attempt to inform?
Teach? Sell? Entertain? Persuade?
Is it fact? Opinion? Propaganda?
Does the point-of-view appear impartial and objective?
What happens if I use Wikipedia as a source for my paper?
Wikipedia does not pass the CRAAP Test.
– The Authority of the author(s) is undetermined
– The source of the information is often unknown
(Accuracy cannot be verified)
“If I use Wikipedia as a source for my paper, I
will earn a ZERO.”
With the C.R.A.A.P. Test you will know for sure.
Is it a good website or is it
____________??!!
Don’t clog up your paper
with nonsense…plungers
only work for toilets!
Citing an Internet Source
Open to Handouts Page 11 and
get your highlighter ready…
Always include as much information as is
available/applicable: – Author and/or editor names
– Name of the database, or title of project, book, article
– Any version numbers available
– Date of version, revision, or posting
– Publisher information
– Date you accessed the material
– Electronic address,
NOT underlined, printed between carets ([<, >]). Period goes
AFTER carets.
What should I include when I cite a web site?
It is necessary to list your date of access
because web postings are often updated.
Use n.p. if no publisher name is available and
n.d. if no publishing date is given.
What should I include when I cite a web site?
Highlight 10.3 on page 11.
Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). “Page
Title.” Name of Site. Date of Posting/Revision. Name
of institution/organization, date of resource creation
(if available). Medium of publication. Date of access.
