Orange Park, Florida - Dark clouds and rain could not dampen the spirits of the Florida Moose members and the Moosehaven residents in attendance on Sunday March 24 for the annual Florida Day Picnic. In anticipation of rain a large tent was set up outside and the residents’ display areas were set up inside.

During a break in the rain the crowd gathered outside for the presentation of two vehicles.

A new bus was donated by the Florida Bermuda Moose Association and a fully renovated passenger van was donated by Bill Grier of Pensacola Lodge #557.

The keys of both vehicles were presented to Moosehaven’s Executive Director John Capes.

District 4 President James Esposito also presented John Capes with a motorized wheelchair and hand made blankets for the residents.

In addition the Association presented John Capes with a check for $5000.00 to jumpstart preparations for Moosehaven’s Fourth of July festivities.

We, as Florida Moose, are blessed to have Moosehaven in our own backyard. If you didn’t make the trip this year plan on attending next March.

By the time you read this we will be winding up the Moose Year if is not already complete. At the time of this writing I do not know if we will have a gain in active members for the year but it looks promising. Either way I want to thank all who put forward the effort to do

our best to make it happen.

Now we must look forward to the new year and the new membership campaign from Moose International. I have no idea what it will be at this point, but I am sure it will be something to help our Lodges, Chapters and Moose Legions to accomplish the goals set forth.

The new FBMA Membership Campaign is “Making Good Things Happen.” By signing new members we are making good things happen at Mooseheart, Moosehaven and in our communities. Each of us can make a difference. Lets make the 2013-2014 year the best we have ever had.

I hope by now all of you have made your plans to be in Milwaukee for the International Convention. I have not been to Milwaukee in 25 years but I bet it is as nice a city as it was then, maybe even better. Let’s have a big showing for this convention. We had all Lodges represented in Tampa, so let’s show the fraternity we can do it when it is outside of our back yard.

I also would like to see as many of you as possible at Mooseheart’s 100th Anniversary on July 27, 2013. It is going to be one heck of a party. Stop and think about that accomplishment. We, the members of the Moose, have been caring for children on our own campus for 100 years. If that doesn’t make you proud to be a member ,I don’t know what would.

I am looking forward to the next Moose Year and all it will hold for us. I know that the summer is a tough time for many of our Lodges due to the snowbird traffic. Maybe it is time for those Lodges to start thinking outside of the box. Each of our communities have residents that reside there the year around. Each board of officers taking office May 1st should be looking for ways to capitalize on that local population. Be creative with your membership campaigns at the lodge level. Maybe even host an Open House during the summer to let those locals see what you have to offer. Get involved in the community by supporting local community service events, not by throwing money at them, but by throwing bodies at them. Wear your lodge shirts while participating in these events. If we just try something new we may not have to be worrying about the numbers on April 30, 2014.

Thanks for all you do and be safe this Spring and Summer.

Fraternally,

Jerry MonkRegional Manager

MESSAGE FROM THE REGIONAL MANAGER

"Search the Internet, make the difference." This is the motto of newly developed search engine called GoodSearch.com. This new engine, powered by Yahoo, was created by Ken and JJ Ramberg and allows users to search the Internet

while donating money to a charity of their choice at the same time.

be looking for ways to capitalize on that local population. Be creative with your membership

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

When you read this, we will have already had our 53rd Mid - Year Conference. What an outstanding conference it was. Valuable information was shared by all those scheduled for a presentation, and it is my wish that all in attendance will share that information with their Lodges and Moose Legions.

It was great having Ron Sweetman, our Official Visitor, and his wife Pearl at the conference. Ron has a wealth of knowledge in regards to our fraternity and I hope some in attendance had an opportunity to speak with Ron. He would be welcomed back as the OV anytime.

As I write this for the Courier Publication we are still short on members to have a plus 1 gain in association membership come May 1, 2013. But with hard work and dedication by all, I know that we can make it happen.

As the new Moose Year begins May 1st, we must continue to work on increasing our membership and RETAIN/RECOVER those members in an expired status. Growth in membership for our Association and Fraternity is a must for the continued funding and support of Mooseheart’s Child City, and Moosehaven’s City of Contentment.

As we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Mooseheart this year, I hope those who can, have made plans to attend the International Convention schedule May 24 – 29, 2013 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Let’s make it a 100% showing for the FBMA by having at least one member in attendance from each of our Lodges.

Please continue to support all International and FBMA campaigns.

Thanks again for what you each do for your Lodges, our Association, and our wonderful Fraternity, which is second to none!

Let’s continue to make this the best year ever!

Fraternally, Lynn A. Klein, FBMA President

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY GRAND REGENT

WOW! WOW! WOW! Florida Co-workers are Fabulous!

We had the Mid -Year Convention at the Rosen Plaza in Orlando in April. What a turn out!!! Lots of great new and old friends and our Grand Chancellor Barb McPhearson shared plenty of information.

We had great skits, flashing lights, plenty of women with horns and lots of wee tiny kids. I wonder what we will have at our State Convention in September for our Green Cap Convocation.

I hope all of you are planning to go to the International Convention in Milwaukee on May 22 through May 29. So many of our Moose members will be receiving Degrees and there will be Mooseheart Graduations.

This will be a big celebration for Mooseheart Kids and the Women of the Moose for a Great 100 year span.

We will all wear our Centennial scarves to honor them at the Joint opening session on Friday May 24th at 7:00 PM.

Hope to see all of you there. DO IT FOR THE KIDSCherry RunyonDeputy Grand Regent

On behalf of the Hostess Chapter, Palatka, Tudy Cundiff would like to say Thank You to all the Chapters who made their job so easy at the Mid-Year Conference. They all did a great job with the door prizes, pre-registration and being kind when there was an issue to deal with.

Milwaukee Convention Photo Call, Bring Photos Of Your Lodge’s And Chapter’s Family Activities And Sports

We will once again be providing corkboards, in the Lodge Operations Department display area at the International Moose Convention in Milwaukee, to display photos of your Lodge activities.

All Lodges are encouraged to bring a photo or two, not larger than 5"x7", to post on these display boards for all of the attendees at the Milwaukee convention to see.

This is your opportunity to post pictures showcasing the fun times we all share as Moose members and the specific activities enjoyed by the members of your Lodge and Chapter.

You may wish to include a brief description on an address label sized sticker on the front of the photos. Lodges will have an opportunity to reclaim their photos, if they wish, on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, prior to noon. Unclaimed photos will not be returned to the Lodges.

ORLANDO, Florida - For the second year in a row, the Palm Bay Moose Lodge sponsored a t e a m t o participate in the Special O l y m p i c s

Florida Polar Plunge at Aquatica. Our team raised more than $900 this year and when combined with the Florida Bermuda Moose Association Heard of Moose Team our group raised over $4200. The amount announced that was raised at the Plunge this year was $220,000. While the feeling of the cold water was breathtaking, the feeling of being part of

such an effort to provide activities for our local youths in the State of Florida meant so much more. With temperatures the morning of the plunge dipping into the low 40's, no one knew how cold the water would be. I know with our team we brought a support troop that would keep us warm all day long. You see, if you raised $100 for Special Olympics, you and two guests received admission to Aquatica the day of the plunge. All the pools are heated and the kids enjoyed being able to swim all day long. As last year, we were one of the last five cars in the parking lot after the park had closed. What a fantastic day, Raising money for Special Olympics and having fun with our family and friends. Just let us know if you are interested in participating next year!

COMMUNITY SERVICE and FUNDRAISING

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida - On March 10, 2013 Palm Beach Gardens Lodge 2010 held a benefit in conjunction with Southeast Rods and Customs to raise money for Hospice of Palm Beach County. This will become an annual event at the Lodge as it is for a very worthy cause. All the money raised stays in Palm Beach County to fund the various programs that Hospice oversees.

Governor Michael Pietras would like to thank everyone who helped to make the event a huge success - from the Bullfrog Crew, that did an awesome job on the Barbeque, to everyone else that helped in more ways that it’s possible to mention.

This was an excellent example of how the members of Palm Beach Gardens Lodge 2010 and Chapter 1471 come together and make things happen and make their Lodge shine in the Moose Fraternity.

Pictured at right is Michael Pietras accepting an award of appreciation from Southeast Rods and Customs on behalf of the members of the Lodge and Chapter.

ST. JAMES CITY, Florida - The Officers of Pine Island Moose 1954 honored Ron Bokros at their meeting. A tribute was held in his honor for his diligent efforts for 14 years of chairing the Annual Bicycle Poker Run. This annual event is the biggest fundraising event of the Lodge, with hundreds of participants. A good time for a worthy cause, the Poker Run proceeds fund Scholarships for graduating Island Seniors. Ron Bokros and his faithful crew have provided scholarships for over 50 graduating Seniors. Ron retired last year and passed the torch to Tom Akers. The Officers were proud to present Ron with a plaque and have a perpetual scholarship named “The Ron Bokros Scholarship”.

FLORIDA SHERIFFS YOUTH RANCHES

One of the benefits of working for the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches is seeing firsthand how our services help kids. As a case in point, I’d like to share this note from a camper named Monica to someone who sponsored her for summer camp:

Each year the children at summer camp send “Thank You” cards to their sponsors. Many of these cards are heartwarming to the recipients… confirming their financial gifts have impacted the life of a child.

“At camp I learned to be a kid again…” That’s a powerful statement from a child.

Each summer we hear heart-wrenching stories of abuse, neglect and children who are missing out on their childhood. Many of the boys and girls who attend camp are in desperate situations.

Summer Camp is a fun-filled break from the life children encounter at home. At Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches summer camps kids participate in swimming, challenge course activities, arts and crafts, sports, singing, and other related recreational adventures. The experiences boys and girls have at camp show them there is a wonderful world outside their daily lives.

For 55 years, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranchers has been fighting to change the lives of Florida’s unfortunate and neglected children. We wish our services weren’t needed, but the reality is there are many families who face hardships that are difficult to overcome. Fortunately the Sheriffs of Florida had the foresight to try and impact the lives of unfortunate and neglected children in a positive way… and you can too.

If you would like more information on how to help sponsor a child at camp, please contact Frank Kenny, Donor Relations Officer at 1-800-765-3797 or visit us at www.youthranches.org.

HOW SUMMER CAMP CAN HELP A CHILD

The Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches is extremely grateful for the van provided by the Florida Bermuda Moose Association. The new van is being used at Lewis Cottage at the Boys Ranch in Live Oak, Florida. Several of the cottage boys helped install the new decal recognizing the Florida Bermuda Moose Association for this most generous gift.
