AFL President’s Comment

So to Round 11 and we are on the home stretch now with only five games

until the finals. Round 10’s results included a couple of results that many

would have viewed as upsets. At No.1 Oval, the Roos had a convincing

win in the hometown derby. This was a reversal of the result in the first

round and demonstrated (if anyone doubted it) that last year’s premiers are

certainly contenders for this year’s titles. At Bellevue, the Dogs had a

good win over the Nomads who are often difficult to beat at

home. Although the Nomads were ahead at various points, in the end the

Dogs’ teamwork and fitness (or conversely the Nomads’ lack of fitness)

allowed them to run away easy winners. Finally down at Muswellbrook

the Saints had a huge win by a margin of 173 points with Mick Viney and

Joe Kimmince scoring heavily.

This week sees a double-header at No.1 Oval with both games looking

like they will be close. In the first game the Swans are at home to the

Nomads. This is an important game for both sides. The Nomads are

playing for a spot in the finals while the Swans will be looking to maintain

top spot which at the moment they hold on percentage. In the second

game at Tamworth the Roos will face the Saints. Both teams are coming

off good wins and both will want to keep up their momentum as they head

towards the finals. It should be an excellent game of football. In the final

match the Muswellbrook Cats host the Gunnedah team. With the return of

a few old faces, they will be hoping to be more competitive, especially at

home.

Enjoy the football.

Tamworth Swans

The 11th of July looked a big day for the Swans but ended in disappointment on all

fronts. A big effort in putting on the Ladies Day function was more or less wasted

with poor support, particularly from within the football community, and a big effort on

the field went to waste in a lack lustre 15 minutes in the final quarter.

With the Bulldogs joining us on top of the ladder, the Swans may seem under pressure,

but Jim Cassidy did allow the field back to Might and Power before careering away

with the 1997 Caulfield Cup. No doubt Rick Watt will be scrubbing his charges be-

hind the ears for their final effort as the business end of the season approaches.

Now we face the Nomads with their season on the line. With two tight tussles this

year against the students, the match promises to be a close one. The Nomads have

performed well with the wide flanks at Bellevue, which if transferred to Number One

Oval would incorporate the homeware section of Target, and the Swans will be confi-

dent that they can restore pride on their home waters.

The second match of the double header pits the Roos against the Saints and a great day

of footy awaits. Action starts at 1pm.

Yours in footy,

Josh McKenzie

The Mighty Cats are at home again this weekend to the Gunnedah

Bulldogs. The Cats are still looking to post their first win for the

season after yet another loss to the Saints at home last weekend.

The Cats have been steadily rebuilding throughout the year and

have produced some magnificent pieces of play during the course

of the season, we just need to find the catalyst to produce a win for

the 2009 season. The boys have been training the house down dur-

ing the week but have been unable to convert on Saturdays.

With time fast running out for the Cats, the Dogs had best be on

top of their game as they travel to Werriman Field this Saturday to

face the wounded and winless Cats. The Cats will once again be

looking for big games from Captain Grant Ellis, Stuart McAdam,

Adam Warner, Wayne Gunn Quinton Foxcroft, Adam Griffiths and

our newest life member and 101 game veteran Steve Mullane con-

gratulations Steve on playing your one hundredth game last week-

end and in doing it in style with a best on the ground performance

well done bullet.

Inverell Saints

The Inverell Saints travel for the fourth consecutive week when they head

to Tamworth this weekend to take on the Kangaroos. Although the Saints

have won 2 of their 3 games on the road this trip out, they have not won

at Number One Oval in their last 6 attempts. It has been an interesting

period for the Saints, but with only 5 rounds left to play in the home and

away season, it is time to deliver on what has been a season of promise.

These two teams have had some epic battles in the last 2 and a half

seasons, with less than 3 straight kicks being the difference in 5 of the last

6 matches. This match also looms as a massive one for both clubs, with

the Saints and Roos tied on 6 wins for the season and just 4 points from

the ladder leaders. With last week’s big win in Muswellbrook, the Saints

are left to rue even more the loss in Gunnedah two starts back when they

conceded a 5 goal lead. That win would be enough to have the Saints on

top the ladder, however now they must get over the Roos to give

themselves a chance of hosting a final this year.
