Trimester 1

Managing Sustainable CorporationsThis course will set the scene for your MBA. Reaching beyond traditional debates on CSR and sustainability, you will explore the regulatory and political context that shapes responsible business decisions, learn how you, as a leader, can use management and governance systems to inspire responsible conduct, and address problems such as corruption and human rights violations. In the first part of the course, you will look at how macrofactors such as politics and economics shape an organisation's interest in and adoption of responsible business policies. During the second part, you will look at how to overcome organisational barriers to lead responsibly. This course makes frequent use of practical elements such as guest lecturers and cases.

Organisational LeadershipIn this course, you will explore key leadership issues and challenges related to organisational strategy and structure, and how to enhance organisational performance by managing people and work processes. You will be encouraged to share insight and experiences with the rest of the group and will encounter several case studies on current organisational topics such as changing an organisational culture, fostering socially responsible

behaviour, implementing diversity management, and dealing with stakeholders. The course will complement the personal and psychological perspectives developed in the Leadership Discovery Process.

Human Resource ManagementIn this course, you will learn the key components and concepts of strategic human resource management. Drawing upon a wide range of disciplines – including organisational behaviour, strategy psychology and economics – you will present, discuss and apply theories, frameworks and tools to manage human resources more effectively and to support the strategic objectives of the firm. The course is taught using the 'case-based teaching' method, which assumes inductive knowledge generation and involves high-energy discussion, debate and interaction.

Management AccountingYou will gain an understanding and appreciation of the strengths and limitations of an organisation's accounting systems and how it relates to management decisions and responsibilities. You will acquire a framework for analysing and understanding these accounting systems (such as budgeting, reporting, analysis and management of cost, responsibility accounting and transfer pricing), as well as the design of comprehensive approaches to performance management.

Course ContentThe teaching in the MBA auditorium includes the use of cases, guest speakers, simulations and active participation. Throughout the MBA year, you will be evaluated through a mixture of exams, papers, group work and presentations.

As soon as I started to speak to the CBS staff, I knew this was the MBA for me. The manner in which things are done inside and outside the MBA classroom is friendly and inviting, and being in a small class means I benefit from lots of attention from faculty.”

THE COPENHAGEN MBA18

Furthermore, you will reflect on the internal accounting system’s role in keeping the firm and its members honest, responsible, and able to actively engage in activity that is both economically, environmentally and socially sustainable, i.e. to manage the Triple Bottom Line.

Marketing ManagementIn this course, you will learn to apply concepts, frameworks, models and theories, enabling you to analyse the 5xCs data (company, competitor, customer, collaborator and context). This will let you find the best match between your organisation’s resources and the existing market conditions. You will also learn to use advanced qualitative data (mindset, mind mapping) as well as Big Data (structured and unstructured, social media, sensor), including how your mindset as a manager affects the strategic use of Big Data, hereunder various new market approaches (sales and promotion, listen and learn, connect and collaborate, empower and engage) as well as the platform revolution. Issues related to responsible marketing and ethical dilemmas are woven into class discussions.

EconomicsThis course will give you an understanding of how economic principles can be used in decision-making and to predict the effects of changes in the economic environment where firms operate. In the microeconomics part of the course, you will explore cost analysis, pricing strategies, and strategic interaction in markets. In the macroeconomics part, you will examine the economic aspects that shape the business environment. You will also review the current economic situation, both nationally and internationally. After completing the course, you will be able to explain the determinants of economic developments both in the short- and long-term, and understand the impact on the economy from the various shocks that hit it and the impact of subsequent policy.

Analytics and Big DataIn this course, you will learn to extract value from business data –a crucial skill in today’s environment and a major competitive advantage for firms. You will learn to understand the relationships

between different business factors, forecast trends, appreciate the risks arising from management actions, and optimise investment strategies. In order to make the right decision under uncertainty and time pressure, you need to grasp the range of uncertainty rapidly and make a rational decision that is both flexible and robust. This course is multidisciplinary and links to accounting, economics, finance, marketing and operations management.

Trimester 2 Financial Statement AnalysisThis course is an introduction to financial statement analysis and will develop your ability to read, understand, evaluate and use financial statements. You will learn how to measure and assess a firm’s profitability and liquidity risk analysis using financial ratios. Furthermore you will learn how to forecast projected earnings and cash flows. This in turn will be used for assessing the current and future financial health and value of the firm of your interest, be it the firm you are working for, competing with, allying with or buying shares (or full ownership) in.

Change ManagementIn Change Management, you will examine theories of change and development as they apply to organisations, groups and individuals. You will explore how different theoretical perspectives on change are reflected in the range of approaches that can be applied to the diagnosis and solving of problems in organisations. Special attention will be given to the critical issues that need to be considered when developing and implementing a plan for change, such as organisational politics, stakeholder management, strategic leadership, communication, motivating others to change, and maintaining control during the change process. You will also study change agency and styles of intervention.

Operations ManagementDuring this course, you will study the development, production, and delivery of goods and services to the final customer. Supply chains are often organised around complex multinational networks where sourcing of inputs, production processes and distribution channels are tied together by integrative

Hereafter, you will focus onunderstanding the importance of a firm’spayout policy, why firms choose aspecific capital structure, and howto estimate the cost of capital.Upon completion of the course you will

understand the relationship between riskand expected return, know how to valuea partly debt financed investment projector firm by estimating expected cash flowsand cost of capital, and have a clearunderstanding of when payout policyand capital structure matters.

Strategic ManagementIn this course, you will learn to understand the strategic issues that you, as a manager, must address. Strategic analysis assumes that most resource and product markets are fundamentally imperfect and are not necessarily in competitive equilibrium. In fact, they would often seem to be in a state of permanent disequilibrium. Opportunities constantly emerge when industry conditions change, or when innovating firms change these conditions. Firms achieve competitive advantage by understanding these conditions and opportunities, by designing strategies and organisations that match their capabilities to available opportunities and by executing well. We will therefore also discuss your roles as responsible general managers in organisations and how you can manage and implement strategy.

I very much appreciate this diverse MBA environment. Since we are part of a small class, I get to know my classmates properly and building a network of people from all over the world helps broaden my horizons.”

Trimester 3

Elective CoursesIn addition to the core courses, you will have the opportunity to further your MBA skillset in the third trimester by selecting three of the elective courses on offer. The electives vary from year to year, but below are examples of the courses which may be available to you:

• Big Data (progressional)• Economics of Strategy• Business Plan Writing

for Social Entrepreneurs• Mergers & Acquisitions• Negotiation• The MBA Accelerator• Innovation Management

The Integrated Strategy ProjectThe pinnacle of the programme is the final strategy project, during which you will channel your new-found business skills and knowledge into a real-life strategic challenge. You and your fellow students work together in a small group, acting as advisers to a company in the region, obtaining information and analysing data and translating this into a strategic plan for the relevant business unit. Many MBA students speak of the strategy project as the highlight of their year, as it tests and challenges your entire MBA skillset. It also provides you with an unmatched opportunity to create ties and relations to an international company that is based in Denmark.

I use the principles of the Copenhagen MBA every day. Running a start-up requires me to be in contact with so many different stakeholders on a daily basis. Whether I am talking to a VP, a lawyer, or an accountant, I need to be able to speak the language. The Copenhagen MBA taught me that whatever your position is, whatever you are doing: you are a leader every day.”

HOW HAVE ALUMNI PUT THEIR MBAS INTO PRACTICE?

I’m currently employed as Group Commercial Controller at Carlsberg Group in Denmark. It’s an exciting role in a global company, offering the opportunity to interact with the 100s of markets across the world in which Carlsberg is produced or exported.

The skills and experience I gained through the MBA provided the perfect stepping stone for a global role. The small class sizes of the Copenhagen Business School MBA were a huge plus, enabling me to get to know and work with everybody, and giving me opportunities to learn more about several different cultures. This gave me a head start when it came to dealing with the many and varied markets that my role requires.

In terms of soft skills, the MBA has been a great eye-opener. The course, and in particular the Integrated Strategy Project at the end, really brought home to me the fact that despite learning the same methods and tools, everyone has a different approach to management. And that’s a good thing. The MBA has given me a great opportunity to try different approaches and develop my own style by seeing, through trial and error, what works and what doesn’t.

An MBA from Copenhagen Business School really helps you stand out from the crowd when it comes to job search and performance at a senior level. The skills I’ve learned have been more than worth the financial and time commitment required!

Group Commercial Controller,

Carlsberg Group

CMO, Kilroy Group Today as the Chief Marketing Officer, I work in the intersection between strategy and operations. I find it inspiring to work with strategy from a holistic commercial perspective because it forces me to consider the interdependencies across functions and business areas.

The MBA has definitely prepared me for my current position, and I find myself leveraging my learnings from the broad variety of classes and experiences from the MBA.

On a daily basis, I use tools and learnings from the Leadership Discovery Process, Managerial Accounting, Strategy, A-board but also my participation in the Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) have proven valuable in my work when assessing companies for partnerships or potential acquisition.

Completing the MBA is the best investment I could have made in myself. It provided me a unique opportunity for accelerated development on both a professional and personal level.”

I genuinely love my job. From finding bottom line efficiencies in production to establishing relationships across borders, every day holds a new challenge!

Before my MBA, I worked in financial analysis in different industries in Venezuela and the transition could have come as a bit of a shock, both culturally and professionally. But the skills learned on the MBA have set me up perfectly for my current role.

I find that I am practicing the Leadership Discovery Process skills almost daily when reflecting on meetings and planning tasks. I have also revisited many of the hard skills learned – benefitting from the analytical and holistic mindset we were encouraged to develop throughout the course.

I can only recommend working for a Danish company – my experience of transitioning into the Danish job market has been nothing but positive. The market is buoyant, the work-life balance is good and the working environment is built on trust, diligence and flexibility. Working within a flat organisation means that there are plenty of chances to establish relationships with professionals with plenty of experience, which in itself is a great learning opportunity.

Green CityKnown as the world's "most liveable city", Copenhagen offers a huge range of possibilities in lifestyle choices. Arts, culture, sports, leisure activities, food and drink are all easily accessible. Part of the city’s uniqueness comes from its environmentally-friendly agenda, which is expressed in creative concepts such as city beaches. There is also no need to leave the city in search of green spaces; all residents live within easy reach of parks.

High Quality of LifeCopenhagen has one of the lowest crime rates in the world and visitors often mention the feeling of security and safety as one of the city’s most distinctive features. The well-functioning public transport infrastructure in combination with the bicycle lanes throughout the city make it easy for you to get around and enjoy the rich culture of the local area. Copenhagen is world-renowned for leading the sustainability agenda in transportation, energy, waste management and other aspects of city development.

Your Working EnvironmentDenmark offers one of the world’s top working environments where work/life balance and self development are encouraged.
