dating and challenges ahead and open sessions and lectures on following sub
themes.
1) Rock Art Dating and Challenges Ahead
2) Rock Art and Tribal Art
4) Symbols, Language and Meaning in the Rock Art
5) Cognitive and Behavioral Aspects of the Rock art
6) Rock Art- Regional Importance and Contributions
7) Cupules- Antiquity, Continuity and Present perspectives
We are also organizing a visit to Bhaja and Karla Buddhist rock cut caves for the
congress delegates on payment basis provided we get sufficient number of
participants.
Rationale
The discovery of rock art in India was made by Archibald Carllyle in 1867-68, near
Sohagighaṭ in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh India. Therefore, this year we are
celebrating the 150th year of the discovery of rock art in India. During this period rock art
has been reported from throughout the country and we have made long strides in the
regional studies of rock art. Dr. Vishnu Shridhar Wakankar, the founding father of Rock Art
Discipline in India, had strong association with Deccan College. Besides, India has played
crucial role in the study of early petroglyphs in the world and has the credit to be the
pioneering country for understanding the technology of early cupules in the world. Thus,
Indian rock art studies are playing crucial role in understanding the cognitive and cultural
development of the early humans. Now the time has come that India should expand our
vision and try to understand the role of India in the cognitive and cultural development of
the early humans in the global perspective. Sea provided an easy route for migration and
coastal regions were better suitable for sustainable development of the early humans.
Thus, the Congress theme, “Rock art discipline in Indian Ocean Rim Countries:
Prospects, challenges and strategies to meet them” is befitting the occasion. It includes
the Indian Ocean Rim countries from South Africa upto Australia. Therefore we invite
papers for the future plan and strategy of rock art research in India and in the overseas
countries.
