7. Expert Opinion

7.1 Andy Brink, Global Technology Manager at Michelman Visiongain sought the expertise of Andy Brink PhD, Global Technology Manager for Fibres and

Composites at Michelman. Andy Brink has an extensive twenty-year work history in the composite

industry, and established his own company, Hydrosize Technologies, that was subsequently

purchased by Michelman in 2008. Andy Brink also speaks publicly about composites, and

presented at the 2013 Global Outlook for Carbon Fibre conference. His talk was titled “The

Importance of Fibre Sizing on Composite Processing and Properties”.

7.2 Areas for Potential Growth in Composite Demand Visiongain: Where do you expect to see growth in the Composite market?

Andy Brink: The largest application that is driving the market is the automotive sector. The USA’s

Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations demand a reduction in vehicle weight, and

composites are ideal materials to reduce weight.

Wind energy has previously been a significant growth driver, but since the start of the financial

crisis in 2008, the market has slowed. Several factors have contributed to the slower pace of

growth: due to much slower economic growth, or even recessions, the growth in electricity demand

has slowed down significantly. In the US market the recent strong developments of shale gas have

led to unprecedented low prices of natural gas. Just as the wind energy market has caught up with

the price of coal fired power, it now needs to catch up with all the price of low natural gas.

In the US, instability in tax incentives makes growth unpredictable, especially with annual Congress

debates. The wind-energy sector will grow with or without such government subsidies, but growth

rates can jump unpredictably and the uncertainty in policies leads to speculative behaviour. In

Europe, government austerity programs have led to significant – and in some cases even retro-

active – cuts in incentives. This has created an unfavourable climate for investment.

Lastly, the Chinese wind energy market is recovering from significant overcapacity in the supply

chain and from wrongly placed incentives. China had built too many wind turbines compared to

what its grid could handle, so consumption of composites ground to a halt a few years ago. These

issues are close to being resolved.

Asahi Fibre Glass, headquartered in Tokyo is one Japan's leading manufacturers and sellers of

residential insulation fibreglass since 1956. Asahi Glass Company (AGC), Asahi Fibre Glass’

parent company, has used its core technology and expertise to expand into new business sectors

including that of industrial materials and construction and this is origination of Asahi Fibre Glass.

Asahi Fibre Glass was the leading company in both the glass fibre and total composite markets,

accounting for 4.3% of the fibreglass market and 2.3% of the total composite market.

Asahi Fibre Glass is Japan's leading manufacturer and seller of consumer residential insulation

fibreglass since 1956. The Company leverages its accumulated technology to expand into new

business sectors, including industrial materials.

FONTEX (which stands for the fount of the light) is the new plastic optical fibre (POF) developed

with AGC’s technology platform of POF and fluorine. FONTEX is fully compatible with next-

generation AV data communication due to its high-speed characteristics at 10Gbps and above. In

addition, FONTEX is able to function even when knotted or bent while existing silica optical fibres is

not able to. Therefore, FONTEX is the reliable, safe optical fibre for next-generation household

electronic appliances which is capable of stable high-speed data transmission with a certain level

of rough treatment.
