Perforated steel front door option provides 72% airflow.

The Black Box RAK-IT server cabinets are built to an incredibly high standard offering the very best quality at a very competitive price. Based upon a CR4 steel constructed frame, the Black Box RAK-IT server cabinets offer unrivalled 360° access to the cabine.

The RAK-IT range of cabinets are tested to 1200 kg total weight with even weight distribution and so are built to hold even the heaviest of kit in a secure but accessible cabinet.

The ventilated steel front door provides 72% air flow and is easily removed by the use of two sprung hinges that give positive feedback when they are locked. The rear door is hinged on the same quick release mechanisms. The two side panels are able to

be unlocked, and when the front door is removed, the side panels will slide forward without inference. This means that even if the cabinet is butted up against another cabinet, access can be provided to the entire cabinet. Once all the panels are removed, only the four uprights are left in position, making installations a piece of cake. Suitable for use in all conventionally cooled data centres, as well as both cold aisle and hot aisle containment systems.

All of the cabinets in the range come complete with transport castors enabling the cabinet to be transported over rough surfaces, such as tarmac car parks and concrete floors, without damaging the final castors or plinth.

Each cabinet is also shipped with 8 jumper rings for vertical cable management as well as both front and rear mounting angles.

To ensure adequate air flow, each cabinet also has a vented top cover and an open bottom. Air can be drawn through from the bottom of the cabinet for cold aisle containment, or through the vented steel front doors for hot aisle / cold aisle containment applications.

Cabinets & RacksData Centre Cooling Data Centre Cooling vs Containment Systems

Traditional Data Centre Cooling vs Containment Systems. There have been lots of discussions regarding the cooling of data

centres and heat management. Fuelled by recent government legislation detailing the need to reduce energy consumption, this has become a hot topic. The need to reduce heat, and thus power and costs, whilst offering maximum efficiency has become more important than ever.

The traditional method of cooling a data centre is via perimeter cooling, and is born from a time when rack densities were low and energy costs were considered irrelevant or were not visible to the customer. The cost of energy has rocketed up over the past few years and when combined with modern requirements to become greener and cosume less energy, a strong case is presented to re-evaluate traditional thinking on data centre environmental control. No more so than in this current economic downturn.

Two recent developments have been the idea of containing either the hot air or the cold air and managing them separately to each other. The common theme between them is to separate out the cooled air in to the cabinets from the hot air exhausted from the cabinets. So how do these technologies work, and how do they differ? Perimeter Cooling

Traditional data centre cooling is based around perimeter cooling, where air conditioning cooling units, placed around the circumference of the data centre, cool all the air inside the data centre. This includes the air above, below and around the cabinets, in the false floors and false ceilings, as well as the actual cabinets themselves. This is not very efficient as it’s the equipment inside the cabinets that needs cooling, not the air outside the cabinets. Also the hot air produced from the equipment in the cabinets is exhausted straight back out into the main data centre, causing more work for the cooling units. Since most of the air being cooled is not actually in the cabinets, the majority of energy consumed in the cooling process is wasted, effectively wasting money. As a by-product, it also produces an uncomfortably cold data centre where engineers, installers and visitors are subjected to conditions that can make it hard to work. Cold Aisle Containment

Cold aisle containment works differently. By taking the cold air directly from the coolers and routing it to the base of the cabinets, a direct path is established, removing the heating effects of the exhausted hot air. The cold air is drawn up from the front of the cabinet and through the equipment inside, and the resulting hot air is exhausted from the rear of the cabinet, back out into the data centre space. The main advantages are a significant reduction in the energy used to cool the data centre, and the removal of the hot air mixing back into the cold air supply

This diagram shows the flow of air from the air conditioning unit (not shown), through the plenum under the false floor, to the front of the cabinets held within the cold aisle containment area. This air is drawn through the equipment by their internal fans and exhausted to the back of the cabinet, where it rises to join the ambient air in the data centre. This air is then drawn in back through the air conditioning unit.

This diagram shows the flow of air from the air conditioning unit (not shown), through either the plenum under the false floor, or through ducting to the front of the cabinets (most effective installation method), where it is drawn into the cabinet, passed through the equipment and then exhausted to the rear of the cabinet. The hot air from the cabinet is contained and piped back through dedicated piping directly back to the air conditioning unit.

Cold Aisle Containment Hot Aisle Containment

However, to achieve this, the cold air must be channelled under the floor rather than being dispersed into the data centre. This means that air flow through the data centre has to be re-thought and a lot of new equipment added to ensure the air is channelled correctly. This can mean an expensive up front installation particularly for a data centre already using traditional perimeter cooling

Basically the data centre has to be rebuilt and often redesigned. Also, as more moves, adds and changes are implemented, the space under the floor can become more and more congested with new cabling, that will directly affect the air flow through the floor, and decrease the efficiency of the cooling system.

Since the return air to the coolers will become mixed with both hot and cold air, the coolers are unable to run at maximum efficiency further decreasing the overall efficiency of the system as a whole. The data centre itself becomes the area to which the hot air is exhausted to and so the ambient temperature within the data centre can become uncomfortably high, which can present a psychological barrier for new customers expecting the data centre to be cool and concerned about the effects of the heat on their equipment. It becomes a process of education to manage customer’s expectations and to change the typical beliefs and myths regarding data centre temperature management.

Cabinets & Racks Data Centre Cooling

Data Centre Cooling vs Containment Systems

Traditional Data Centre Cooling vs Containment Systems.Hot Aisle Containment

Hot aisle containment is similar but focuses on the exhausted hot air from the rear of the cabinets. The hot air is extracted from above the cabinets and is directly chanelled back to the coolers. This air is not mixed into the data centre but is only fed back to the coolers. The coolers reduce the air temperature and push the resulting cold air through under floor ducting, to the floor in front of the cabinets where it is drawn up through the cabinet again, completing the cycle. The advantage of this system is that it is much easier to install into an existing data centre, as the additional equipment required is fitted above the cabinets, easing the installation and reducing costs. In the event of a cooler failure, the ambient data centre temperature is able to cool the equipment for longer, giving a greater resilience against fast temperature increases. The effectiveness of the system is increased further as the hot air is still removed from the top of the cabinets, removing the effects of the exhausted hot air mixing with the cold air from the coolers. This sytem allows the coolers to run more efficiently than with other systems because the return air is that much hotter. The data centre itself will be regulated at a comfortable temperature since it is no longer the space that the residual heat is dumped to.

Alternative Cooling SystemsTemperature Controlled FansOne easy to install and cost-effective solution can be to install temperature controlled fan trays into existing cabinets. These trays are typically installed into the top of the cabinet and when the temperature rises above a user defined point, the fans come on to help exhaust the hot air from the cabinet. They have their own thermostat built in and only require a single mains socket to work. Since fan trays are installed into the roof of the cabinet, the heat generated by the fan will be exhausted into the air space above the cabinet, which means that temperature controlled fans do not add to the heat inside the cabinet.

Climate CabinetsClimate cabinets are cabinets that have their own air conditioning systems built in. This system has some advantages such as the ability to place the cabinet anywhere, even if there is no false floor or no existing air conditioning system. These cabinets are ideal for smaller office, where a dedicated server room is difficult, or where there is only a small amount of the equipment to be cooled. They work the same way as any air conditioning unit and require a thermal exchange unit to be placed remotely from the cabinet, usually on the outside of the building. They are not the most efficient way to cool equipment, since the air conditioning unit will have a fixed exchange rate. So although the cabinet may start off with only a few items of heat generating equipment, if more kit is scheduled to be added, the air conditioning unit will have to be specified as a larger unit, minimising the efficiency until the cabinet is complete. The correct blanking panels would need to be removed and thrown away when more equipment is to be installed.

ConclusionThe least economical form of cooling is perimeter cooling, so any move from this system is likely to increase efficiency and reduce energy bills. A large green field data centre may consider cold aisle containment as the ideal solution, but for many existing data centres, hot aisle containment looks to provide the best overall increase in efficiency and potentially the best cost saving in energy reduction. It is easier to install and maintain, which helps reduce both the initial cost and the on-going maintenance costs. In both hot aisle and cold aisle containment solutions, it is imperative to ensure the correct flow of air is present and that all cabinets have blanking plates, where required, to force the air to follow the desired path. Whichever solution is opted for, correct air flow is the key to ensuring the best, most effective cooling.Climate cabinets, with their built-in air conditioning systems, provide a great solution for individual cabinets. Smaller installations where little more than a single wall mounted or floor standing cabinet are required, are the perfect place for this solution. Climate cabinets provide the cooling required, in an easy to install solution, without some of the wastage associated with other cooling methods. The Black Box range starts with an 800 BTU wall mount cabinet and goes right up to an 8000 BTU full height floor-standing cabinet. For cabinets without the massive heat generation of servers and blade servers, roof-mounted temperature controlled fan trays are the answer. If the cabinet contains a few Ethernet switches and routers, it will not generate the same level of heat as a cabinet full of blade servers, so why pay more for an expensive solution you don’t need?As each and every site is different and every customer has a different requirement, allied to the fact these solutions are mostly modular, we feel it’s best to discuss each customer’s requirements with them. So give us a call about the solutions available, and we’ll help you choose the system that’s right for you.

Cabinets & RacksCooling Cabinets ColdLogik

ColdLogik CabinetsWhen cooling is everything.

ColdLogik — How It Works1. Chilled water is provided by a free cooling module, chiller or a combination of both.2. The resulting chilled water is pumped through the pipework by the patent pending Leak Prevention System.3. Chilled water is then drawn through each rear door cooler. The waste heat from the active equipment housed within the cabinets is rejected to a heat exchanger matrix. The net result is that the exhaust air returning back into the room is at ambient temperature and therefore has no impact upon the interior of the data centre.4. The ColdLogik system controller's continually monitor the 'air off' temperatures and the returning water temperature. This in turn regulates the rear door cooler fan speeds, the inlet water temperature and volume.

Intelligence — ColdLogik Management SystemThe key element to controlling the room environment is the 'ColdLogik Management System'. Each rear door cooler is intelligently manged for optimum efficiency by embedded computers that continually adjust the operational parameters in response to the heat removal demands placed on the system. By making continual load adjustments the ColdLogik System Controllers maintain the room ambient temperature.

Peace of mind — Leak Prevention SystemThe patent pending Leak Prevention System is another ColdLogik initiative. By putting the data centre loop including the rear door coolers on a negative pressure circuit the whole data centre is safe from potential leaks in places where it can beleast afforded. In the unlikely event say a coupling became loose or a hole was drilled into a pipe, air would be pulled into the gap/hole, thereby preventing water from escaping. The resulting air now in the circuit is drawn through to a tank inside or outside the chiller, where it is finally vented out of the system and prevented from continuing back around the loop. Inline sensors detect a leak which in turn provides a warning, alerting the user to the problem. Importantly the ColdLogik system will continue to work, with no notable effect to its cooling capabilities. As with all aspects of the ColdLogik system the 'LPS' can be retrofitted to an existing circuit, is modular in design and therefore scalable, so it grows with your data centre.

Cooling Distribution UnitIn many cases it is necessary to tap off an existing chiller which already supplies chilled water to other on site services at 6OC. If chilled water from the primary circuit were to remain at this temperature condensation would be induced within the rear door coolers. The Cooling Distribution Unit has been designed to provide close control cooling to the rear door coolers eliminating the potential of condensation. The process side water, otherwise known as the secondary circuit is a sealed pressurised system with the heat extracted from the rear door coolers being rejected to a raw chilled water circuit via a stainless steel plate heat exchanger.

Saving Money — Free Cooling ModuleFree cooling modules can be supplied as a factory fitted extra within the chiller cubicle when space is at a premium or as a separate self-contained unit. All the units are designed to the closest ambient for the desired system water temeperature which at worst case is within 3OC. Our free coolers are all fitted with inverter driven energy efficient fans to increase energy saving when ambient falls below the point of free cooling. These can be fitted to an existing facility when changing from a standard CRAC to ColdLogik system.

Energy Efficient — ChillerOur chiller systems use the latest technology with either high efficiency scroll compressors or oil-less magnetically driven centrifugal compressors both with high EER and ESEER energy figures. Our custom built units from 10 to 250kW can cater for any ambient from -40OC to +55OC or adverse environmental conditions. The chillers can be supplied complete as a standalone package with pumps and tanks or as part of a larger system. The chiller controls communicate directly with the ColdLogik system controller and can vary the water temperature as required.

Cabling Cooling Cabinets

ColdLogik

The Black Box range of ColdLogik cabinets, feature a water cooling system that effectively reduces the heat generated by equipment at source without the usual risk of leaks. Water and electricity obviously do not go well together, and traditional systems do not offer any solution to the possibility of water leakage, an effect that would be devastating to a cabinet of live equipment. The Black Box ColdLogik range of cabinets employ a ‘pull’ pump for the water cooling system, rather than the traditional ‘push’ pumping system. This ensures that if a leak occurred, air is sucked into the pipe work rather than water spilling out. This type of pump system is called a negative pressure system, as there is no ‘positive’ pressure forc-ing the water out of the pipe. Instead, the sucking effect of the pump pulls the water through the entire system, and leaks will only serve to add air into the flow. This air is removed from the pipes further down the chain.

Due to the high efficiency of the cooling system, the water temperature can be much higher than the traditional 6OC, which means a smaller chiller size may be employed, reducing both capital expenditure and ongoing running costs, and increasing the availability of energy efficient ‘free cooling’.

The water temperature may be comfort-ably set between 14OC and 22OC and yet still achieve the maximum heat dissipation of 45kW. The requirement for a smaller chiller

reduces the typical energy consumption down by 35%. For a further 60% in energy savings. When these savings are added together, an energy saving of over 90% can be achieved.

These energy savings can be equated directly to qualifying companies, as a recognised reduction in carbon foot print and therefore taxation benefits through the Carbon Trust and the Enhanced Captial Allowance Schemes initiatives.

To add further savings, because the water temperature is higher than the traditional 6OC, there is no need to purchase condensation prevention equipment as there is no chance of condensation forming at the water temperatures used.

Capital expenditure is a major issue with any new build or new requirement, but for green field sites, the decision is now a no brainer. The Black Box range of ColdLogik cabinets require no false floor for cooling ducts, and they require no hot aisle or cold aisle containment systems. They provide a better use of the available space and lose no ‘U’ space from within the cabinet. They even require no side of cabinet space at all and without doubt offer the best solution for requirements where space is a real issue. This makes the range ideal for installing into cabinets that are already being used. With no demand for under floor space or over cabinet ducting, these cabinets provide the ideal solution at a cost effective price.

Retro FittingOne of the best features of the Black Box

ColdLogik range, is that it can be retro fitted to existing cabinets. All of the cooling appa-ratus is built into the rear door, which can be fitted to any existing cabinet. By cooling down the exhausted air of the cabinet, to less than the ambient room temperature, these cabinets can actually be used to keep your whole data centre cool. You can even switch off your existing CRAC units in most situations. When installed with the free cool-ing module, these cabinet rear doors, can handle 40kW of heat entering them, and still only exhaust an air temperature of 12OC. Typically, these cabinets will require a water temperature of between 14 and 20OC. Most customers run them at 14OC. This reduces the amount of energy required by at least a third. After installing a free cooling module and turning down the CRAC units, you can expect a total energy reduction (based on the cost of the data centre cooling) of around 90%. The ability to add this feature to any existing cabinet from any manufacturer makes this a very powerful solution to the cooling conundrum.

The cooling doors weight a lot. The 40kW units weigh well over 100kg, but the cabinet does not take the weight. The doors are connected to the cabinet, but the weight is taken by an independent pole system so the cabinet is never put under any stress. It’s this clever mounting design that makes it possible to use these doors as an upgrade to ANY existing cabinet.

ColdLogik Cabinets.Traditional cooling in data centres is provided by edge cooling

as already described. This is an inefficient method of cooling the data centre as not only are the cabinets cooled, but also all the space above and below the cabinets, and to the sides, and of course the front and the rear. Most of this air does not require cooling. As such, cooling the areas other than the cabinet represents a huge loss in efficiency and a huge gain in running costs..

Hot Aisle and Cold Aisle containment systems are based around the idea of either controlling the hot air or controlling the cold air, but both are based on the premise that one should be kept away from the other. Both these systems increase efficiency over the traditional method.

ColdLogik cabinets employ a different approach again. They bring the cooling right into the actual cabinet and remove the heat at source. This system uses the smallest amount of space of all the systems, ideal for where space is at a premium.

The ColdLogik range are the only cabinets to boast a leak prevention system. Other cabinets can only provide a leak detection system. And as we all know, prevention is better than cure.

Most water cooled cabinets push water through the system using a pump. If a hole develops in the pipes, the water is pushed out into the inside of the cabinet. Where all the sensitive equipment is.

By employing the pump at the far end of the system, the water is pulled through, known as negative pressure. If a hole develops in a pipe, the water is still pulled through the system. The worst case is that some air will also be pulled into the system. Therefore no water will leave the pipe work, keeping all the electronics safe and secure, and cool.

How it works – Water is chilled by the free cooling module, a chiller, or by both a free cooling module and a chiller. The resulting chilled water is then drawn through each rear door of the cabinets via the pipe work, using the patented negative pressure Leak Prevention Systems. The waste heat is rejected to a heat exchanger matrix. This air is then expelled into the room at the ambient room temperature, therefore having no effect on the air in the data centre. The ColdLogik system controllers continually monitor the exhaust air temperature and the returning water temperature, modifying the rear door cooler fan speeds, the inlet water temperature and the volume of water.

Cabinets & RacksAcoustic CabinetsuCoustic Cabinets

uCoustic CabinetsReduce noise and manage heat — all in one cabinet.

• Reduce noise by up to 28.5dBA.• Heat dissipation of up to 7.2kW.• Independently tested.• Available in active or passive

configurations.

The Black Box range of acoustic cabinets feature 28.5dBA of noise attenuation whilst still maintaining adequate heat control. These cabinets are available as either active cooling or passive cooling and can dissipate up to 7.2kW of heat. The uCoustic range have been successfully tested by MIRA Test Laboratories (Sound Power Measurement in accordance with ISO3744) and are fully compatible with all the leading server brands including the full range of blade servers available.

Typical office environments tned to have noise levels of between 48dBA for a quiet office and 78dBA for a noisy office. A human whisper is aorund 23dBA so by using the Black Box uCoustic range of cabinets, it is possible to reduce cabinet noise to less than a human whisper — quiet enough to be unheard in a normal office environment.

The uCoustic range of cabients are available in three sizes, 12U, 24U and 42U, and all are 780mm wide and 1100mm deep, ideal for servers and blade servers alike each cabient is available in either passive cooling or active cooling configurations, and all cabinets are shipped with load bearing castors, removing the need to replace castors upon delivery.

The active cabinets feature a temperature control sensor and variable speed fan mount-ed on the rear doors. These active cabinets provide 7.2kW of heat dissipation, whereas the passive cabinets provide up to 2.75kW of heat dissipation.

Cable entry is via the base of the cabinet and the cabinets come complete with a cable entry acoustic foam block and acoustic foam cladding to the sides and doors, which is tested for flammability to the following standards: FMVSS 302 — Pass. U194: V0, Hf1 ISO 9001 Acrreditation.

All the foam cladding is easily removed and heat management can be added by using the quick fit blanking panels, which add a further 0.5dBA of noise attenuation. Air flow is deisgned into the cabinet, with cold air being drawn into the front of the cabinets, and the hot air exhausted through the rear of the cabinets.

As a further option, dust ingress protection is available through the use of dust filters. Each cabinet can also be optionally installed into the universal plinth. Finally, to complete the installation, earth bonding kits are available for both the passive and active ranges of cabinets.

Cabinets & Racks Acoustic Cabinets

uCoustic Cabinets

Limited Space Hot Air ExhaustIn some cases, for instance in area's of limited space such as a corner of an office, the hot air is exhausted through the top of the rear doors ensuring that the exhausted hot air is kept away from the cold air stream presented to the front pf the cabinet at all times.

Cold Air FlowCold air is drawn in through the front doors of the cabinet. This air is drawn through the front of the equipment by the internal fans present, and exhausted into the rear of the cabinet. The cold air may be chilled by traditional perimeter cooling, or by hot/cold aisle containment.

Hot Air ExhaustOnce the air flow has been through the equipment it will be hot. Typically, this air could be as high as 40°C or even higher, so the trick is to exhaust the hot air outside the cabinet as quickly and efficiently as possible. Typically, the hot air is exhausted through the sides of the rear doors..

Solution ProfilesA small firm of solicitors recently upgraded the

servers in their office. To try and save costs, they upgraded from four individual servers to a small blade server box offering better resiliency and, of course, better future proofing. Unfortunately, the existing cabinet was in the corner of the main office space, and after the blade server was switched on, it became apparent that the level of noise produced was unacceptable. The office contacted Black Box to see if there was anything we could do.

The first suggestion we gave was to relocate the cabinet, however due to space and patching requirements, this was not deemed a very practical or cost-effective solution. We then suggested one of our uCoustic cabinets to replace their existing cabinet. These cabinets are lined with special acoustic foam and are designed to reduce noise levels by 28dB. By installing blanking panels, the total noise reduction is 28.5 dB. We removed the old cabinets and installed the new uCoustic cabinet in its place.

The blade server was estimated to be around 80 dB which is slightly higher than the typical level of a

noisy office (78 dB). After the cabinet was installed, the level was approximately 55 dB. Normal conversation is typically around 60 dB and a quiet office is around 48 dB, so the difference the cabinet made was startling. To reduce the level to its lowest, Black Box installed the acoustic blanking panels. These quick fit panels also ensure that the air flows through the cabinet correctly, from bottom to top and from front to back. This is critical to maintaining healthy blade servers.

Since the cabinet was in the corner of the office, the only remaining task was to ensure adequate air flow and cooling ability for the equipment inside, especially the blade server itself. Since the uCoustic range of cabinets come with an active fan tray that is mounted in the roof of the cabinet, the fact it was placed in the corner did not cause any problems to the air flow. To ensure that no power is used unnecessarily, the fan tray is controlled through a thermostat and is only switched on when required. Even the fan speed is controlled to ensure that the temperature inside the cabinet is kept safe and con-sistent.
