History

Founded as metalworking shop in 1886, MEA Meisinger has grown to becomean internationally-renowned supplier to the construction industry, thanks to itsinnovative products for cost-effective building.MEA has been fabricating gratings since 1966. Many years of experience andstringent quality standards in the planning, manufacture and sales of gratings haveenabled MEA Metal Applications to become a leading manufacturer of gratings.

Gratings

Gratings are load-bearing, panel-shaped elements with many full-depth openingsin a regular pattern. They consist of vertical, parallel supporting bars intersectedby filler bars. The external edge is called the surround. There is (virtually) no limit to the imaginative ways planners and builders can usegratings for staircases and working platforms. Their transparent appearancegives buildings a unique outline. Gratings offer numerous design options, leaveroom for aesthetic considerations and can be combined with other materials inan impressive number of ways. Gratings can be used anywhere. You will find them in industrial premises, publicand private buildings and in agricultural settings. Traditional indoor uses forgratings include the covers for ventilation shafts, heaters and air-conditioningsystem vents.

Standards / galvanisation

Certified quality

Our quality management systemcomplies with the requirements ofDIN EN ISO 9001:2008 and we arecertified accordingly.

MEA gratings are made of S 235 JRsteel and hot-dip galvanised in a total immersion process to theDIN EN ISO 1461 standard.

Sizing and production processesare in accordance with the qualitycontrol guidelines for gratings:RAL-GZ 638.

Our production plant has beeninspected and certified to EN 1090-1+A1:2011 in accordancewith the latest specifications forprocess planning, control anddocumentation.

We have been inspected and certi-fied to EN 1090-2+A1:2011 for allwelding machines and processes.

In-house galvanisation for top quality results

An essential part of producing gratings is ensuring that they are perfectly protected against corrosion.Hot-dip galvanisation is the best way of protecting steel components againstcorrosion and MEA has the benefit of decades of experience in this field.Today, MEA Metal Applications operates two hot-dip galvanising plants at sitesin Aichach (Germany) and Plzen (Czech Republic). As well as galvanising gratings for use within the MEA Group, the galvanisingplants are also used to full capacity processing numerous contract orders foroutside customers – a flourishing business. The range of services provided by our modern hot-dip galvanising plants goeswell beyond the actual process of galvanisation. It begins with expert advice atthe outset and extends to follow-up work by agreement with the customer, suchas thread-cutting, inserting screws etc.

Finding complete and integrated solutions to your problems is our top priority.

Galvanisation: the process

Hot-dip galvanisation means immersing steel that has been appropriately pre-treated (degreased and pickled) in a molten bath of zinc to alloy its surface andcoat it with zinc. The zinc coating forms an alloy with the steel. It is permanentlybonded to the steel and therefore suitable for all external and internal surfaces. The resistance of the zinc coating depends on the conditions to which it is exposed. It will last between 20 and 40 years, depending on the environmental conditionsand the atmosphere.

Conclusion: hot-dip galvanisation is the best anti-corrosion system for steel. Itoffers many specific advantages which every customer should be aware of. It is:

durable reliable hard wearing cost-effective maintenance free the best solution, even in openings and on edges cathodically protective easy to inspect time-saving smart-looking and environmentally friendly

General Pressed gratings

Filler bars are forced under pressure into the notched supporting bars. The highpressure and design of the notches in the supporting bars guarantee a rigid,warp-free crossbar structure. The method of production ensures that the meshpattern is even and exact and lies flush with the surface. The supporting bars distribute the load on to the grating supports. The fillerbars provide stability and distribute the load proportionally. The surround isspot-welded to the supporting and filler bars.Flat steel rods (for industrial and step gratings) and U-sections (for standardgratings) are used for the surround.

See page 8/9 for the product range

Full gratings

Full gratings are manufactured using the same process as pressed gratings.Supporting and filler bars, both of identical heights and slotted through to thebar centre, are forced into one another under high pressure. The identical surface appearance of both sides of these full gratings makes themideal for balustrade infills, façade cladding, suspended ceilings, partition wallsand much more.Especially important when placing loads on full gratings:The supporting bars are the bars whose ends both rest on the supporting sub-structure and whose underside is not slotted. The surround is spot-welded to the supporting and filler bars. Flat steel rods areused for the surround.

GeneralStainless steel gratings

Stainless steel gratings are manufactured by the same process as pressed gratings. They are made from 1.4301 (V2A) grade stainless steel and pickled ina full-immersion bath. The passive coating produced by pickling is resistant towater, water vapour, atmospheric humidity, citric acid as well as weak organicand inorganic acids. These properties make them ideal for a diverse range of applications, such asthe foodstuffs industry, beverage production, pharmaceuticals and cosmeticsindustry, chemical apparatus construction, etc.Their uniform and attractive surface finish makes stainless steel gratings particularly suitable for aesthetic architecture.

See page 10 for the product range

Welded pressed gratings SP

Welded pressed gratings are manufactured from S 235 JR steel and hot-dip galvanised in a total immersion bath.Filler bars made from twisted square bar steel are pressed under high pressureinto the full-strength supporting bars and electrically welded simultaneously in asingle operation. The welding of all junction points results in a level grating surface and a warp-resistant, rigid lattice structure that offers the maximum possible resistibility andoptimal load distribution.Flat steels and reinforcing strips are used for the surround.

Slip prevention

Metal gratings are sufficiently slip-resistant for normal applications. However, where there is an increased risk of accidents or slippage due to contact withslippery materials such as dirt, oils, fats, water, ice, foodstuffs etc, greaterdemands are placed on the floor covering with regard to slip prevention.Increased slip resistance is achieved by using gratings with serrations in thesupporting and/or filler bars.To comply with these higher specifications, MEA gratings have been tested fortheir slip-prevention characteristics under the regulations of BGR 181 "Floorsin workplaces and areas of work where there is a risk of slippage" and DIN 51130"Testing of floor coverings; determining anti-slip properties; workplaces andareas of work where there is an increased risk of slippage; walking method;ramp test".These tests were carried out by the Technical and Test Institute forConstructions, Prague, Plzen branch. The test results are summarised in thefollowing table. We hold the corresponding certificates.

Since the pattern on the surfacedoes not depend on the height ofthe supporting bars, higher orlower gratings also correspond tothe categories shown above. Example: GiRo - 30/30 – 40/2Slip-resistant filler bar ~ R 12

Special applications14

Special applications Attachment parts

Complex structures require customised solutions. This means making specialproducts, with made-to-measure gratings. With such a diverse range of options, the needs of the customer are always paramount, for example when it comes tomaking a product customer-specific in terms of slip prevention, mesh design ortranslucency. Depending on the application, gratings can also be enhanced withattachments like toe plates, reinforcement sections, angle steels, notches, plates, brackets, or other special features like holes, bolt-on brackets and non-slipsurfaces on the leading edge of step gratings.

Shaping / cut-outs

MEA manufactures gratings with straight and/or curved shaped or cut-out sections.

Grating panels consist of adjacent gratings, firmly secured to the sub-structure,which have been cut to size and shape. In this way, holes for support pillars orpipes and other openings can be taken into account. These are entirely made-to-measure panels, each one constructed to individual customer specifications. MEAhas proved the success of this technique in many buildings and major projects.

Racking grating systems MEA Racking grating systems

MEA Racking gratingsMEA gratings have long been used as racking decks and have proven theireffectiveness a million times over:

High load-bearing capacity, suitable for uniformly distributed and point loads Permanent corrosion protection, hot-dip galvanised Fast, simple installation, dislocation stop,

no additional securement required Racking contents visible from below Compatible with the use of sprinkler systems;

up to 90 % of the cross-sectional area can be open

MEA offers the right solution for every requirement!

Conventional racking gratings with a suspension angle steel or dislocation stopare dimensioned according to the racking depth and expected load. The sizeand spacing of supporting bars will be dimensioned and optimised by MEA incompliance with installation requirements.

MEA deck modules – the innovative lightweight performersMEA deck modules are the only racking decks to have a TÜV SÜD design type certificate and are the perfect option for order picking. There is no possibility ofunexpected rigidity failure. In addition to the depicted MEA deck modules, weoffer further sizes in our standard product range. Of course the dimensions cannaturally also be adapted to your specific requirements.

MEA racking grating modules – the robust all-roundersThe specific advantage of MEA racking grating modules lies in their modularlayout. Each grating, up to a width of 890 mm, can accept a load of up to 750 kg(type-certified). The maximum possible load for a racking deck can simply bedetermined by the number of installed MEA racking grating modules.

MEA racking gratings are fabricated from S 235 JR steel and hot-dip galvanised in a full-immersion process.

Their load-bearing capacity isverified continuously in extensivetrials and tests. In addition touniformly distributed loads, theloading characteristics for non-returnable pallets are alsoexamined.

MEAstep XXL Step gratings22

MEAstep XXL Step gratings XXL Step gratings with an effective span of up to 3000 mmAccording to quality assurance specification RAL-GZ 638, step gratings have tobe able to bear loads as follows on their leading edges: for a flight width ofmax. 1200 mm, a load of 1.5 kN (for public buildings 2.0 kN) is applied centrally, distributed over a contact surface of 100 x 100 mm. For flight widths of morethan 1200 mm, several point loads of 1.5 kN each (or 2.0 kN), each distributedover a contact surface of 100 x 100 mm, are applied simultaneously along thelength of the leading edge at distances of 600 mm. The number of single loadsto be applied simultaneously is calculated from the quotient of the effectivespan (flight width) / 600 [mm]. This figure is rounded down to a whole number.Deflection must not exceed 1/300 of the effective span or a maximum of 6 mm.

To comply with these loading requirements, MEA step gratings for wide effectivespans incorporate an extra strong supporting structure made of U-section steel.

MEA step gratings naturally also comply with DIN 24531 and are made with adouble perforated non-slip leading edge and drilled side pieces made of flat steel

for securing them to the staircase structure. The steps are made of steel andhot-dip galvanised in a total immersion process in accordance with

DIN EN ISO 1461.

MEA steps are made in sizes from 270 x 1600 to 400 x 3000 mm (W x L) and with mesh size 30/30

or 30/10.

Supporting and filler bars are available in a non-slip design on request.

MEA made-to-measure steps

These are made using the same method as pressed gratings. They have bolt-on side sections, lateral pieces made of flat steel with holes forfastening them to the staircase structure. There are higher specifications for slip prevention in relation to steps. MEA made-to-measure step gratings are therefore always made with a double-perforatednon-slip leading edge. In addition to increasing safety, this also makes the stepsstronger.

MEA makes step gratings with:Mesh sizes: 30/10; 30/30; 20/20Supporting bars: up to 50/3Walkable widths: up to 1.60 m

The supporting and/or filler bars can be made with non-slip serrations on request.

Step depth b Dimension nup to 205 90up to 240 120up to 294 150from 295 180

The height h is determined by static requirements. MEA makes made-to-measure step gratings in various shapes and sizes, includingstaircase landings with non-slip leading edges and bolt-on side sections. Please ask!

MEAfloor grating mats made of plasticReduces the risk of slipping (raised surface pattern) and abates noise levels(smooth surface), locks securely into grating meshes, available for mesh sizes30/30 and 30/10.

MEAfloor plastic grating mats can be used on all standard mesh gratings with suppor-ting bar thicknesses of up to 3 mm in 30/30 and 30/10 mesh sizes – regardless of themanufacturer. The standard colour is RAL 7015 slate grey.

Practical and highly versatileThese grating mats will increase safety on practically all stairways, in the leisuresector, at events and around the house: thanks to MEAfloor, mesh gratings can bewalked on comfortably in high-heeled shoes or barefoot (also for pets) and children'spush chairs can also be used easily on mesh grating walkways. At ski lifts they ensu-re a non-slip surface for resort users. The smooth version provides added comfortand safety for practically every other application on mesh gratings: they will reducenoise, for example in warehouse logistics wherever trolleys and roll cages are used. And they prevent dizziness when walking on mesh grating surfaces and staircases.

– Permanent locking into the grating mesh

– Downward and upward screening (where personnelwork above each other)

– Downward views obscured – nodizziness on stairs or landings

– Quiet operating surface forcastors (carts in passagewaysand crossings)

– Safe passage for pointed shoeheels (high heels), also for30/30 mesh size

– Simple cleaning– Marking of routes

Statics / Sizing

Statics / Sizing

35

Effective span:

The grating is generally designed as a single-span load-bearing unit. For sizing purposes, the width of the clear span is important.Minimum support length = grating height, however 30 mm as a minimum.

Loads / load contact area:

A = Grating supportFp = Point load [kN]Fv = Distributed surface

load [kN/m2]f = Deflection [mm]

Load contact area:

= the area affected directly by a specific load, e.g., for gratings for vehiculartraffic, the contact area of a wheel.

Conversion table:

kg = kilogramt = tonnekp = kilopond (outdated)

1 kg ~ 1 daN = 10 N = 1 kp100 kg ~ 1 kN = 100 daN = 1 000 N1 t ~ 10 kN = 1 000 daN = 10 000 N

Statics / Sizing

The load-bearing capacity of gra-tings depends on several factors:

– materials (MEA uses S 235 JRquality steel)

– supporting bar(see table on pages 8, 9, 10 and 11)(The filler bars are not criticalfor sizing, they provide loaddistribution)

– mesh pattern(see table on pages 8, 9, 10 and 11)

– effective span– load– load contact area

Our gratings are sized in accordance with the quality control regulations for gratings,RAL-GZ 638: 09/2008.
