It’s stellar stock.

La Borinqueña, the young female Puerto Rican heroine, has been the star of a series of graphic novels since 2016.

Now her fans can purchase an array of new merchandise inspired by the character, with proceeds targeted to provide aid to Puerto Rico.

Wearing superhero regalia inspired by the Puerto Rican flag, La Borinqueña stands as a fierce champion of the environment who possesses superhuman strength and the ability to fly.

The online store centered on the heroine has just launched a variety of products such as mugs, posters, t-shirts, and personalized comic prints. Fans can also order La Borinqueña comics and an action figure.

The new products are based on partnerships with Fine Art Pop and BKNY Printing Co.

“Our shop is really something that we created to offer our fans something special, but also to raise money to help others,” said creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodríguez.

Proceeds from the product sales help seed the La Borinqueña grant program, which provides $10,000 grants to community-based organizations based in Puerto Rico helping to rebuild the island.

The grants are awarded annually during a ceremony in San Juan.

“It can recognize the work of real heroes on the ground, but also it’s a way to have these organizations meet each other,” said Miranda-Rodríguez. “A lot of times these groups rebuilding the island work in isolation.”

The visual artist, entrepreneur and activist has also released Ricanstruction: Reminiscing

& Rebuilding Puerto Rico, which pairs La Borinqueña with fellow iconic superheroes such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and The Flash.

“DC Comics gave us permission to use of all of those classic characters,” said Miranda-

Rodríguez. “We were humbled and surprised to be able to do that.”

“There’s a story in it where Wonder Woman interacts with the parrots of Puerto Rico,” he added. “It was great to bring those iconic characters into the world of Puerto Rico.”

Since first creating La Borinqueña, Miranda-Rodriguez has specifically sought to bring awareness to climate change and its impact on Puerto Rico through her storylines.

“In the first book, she is dealing with a major tropical storm. That was nine months before Hurricane María,” he said. “María only helped me amplify what I was doing, and laid the foundation for us to raise funds for the island as well.”

Miranda-Rodríguez said he hoped the La Borinqueña character would be inspiring to comic book fans who don’t often see Latinos represented in the world of comics.

“There is a significant underrepresentation for superheroes of color, especially women of color,” he said. “There’s an audience that is hungry for heroes who look like us.”

The next installment in the comic series will be released in 2020, he said.

“They’re seeing her as a symbol of hope. They see themselves in her struggle,” remarked Miranda- Rodríguez of fans of his title character. “We have a comic book that’s immediately connecting people to Puerto

Rico through popular culture and through our grant program we can affect change.”

From Tel Aviv to Tremont Avenue.

Hai Winrauke came from Tel Aviv, Israel in 1988 and was adamant he’d live his version of the “American Dream.” He settled in the Bronx, joined a few years later by his brother Noni, and his then-girlfriend Tania.

The trio gambled on Tremont Avenue, opting to open their first urban clothing and

sneaker store right at 690 East Tremont Avenue.Nearly three decades later, City Jeans

Premium is a denim and sneaker empire, with eight locations in the borough and one in Queens.

“We have 120 employees, all of which were hired from the same communities that we serve,” explained Hai. “And after 30 years, we are truly grateful to the people of the Bronx for their continued support. We couldn’t do it without you.”

Hai was joined by Noni and Tania (now Hai’s wife) as well as a few special guests including

State Senator Gustavo Rivera and students from The School of Mathematics, Science and Technology through the Arts (I.S. 318) on December 4.

The group gathered at the chain’s East Fordham location to honor the entrepreneurial family for its contributions to the borough with the New York State Empire Award, a special recognition presented to “a business that is a leader in their industry, promotes economic growth, positively impacts the community, and is distinguished itself as a pillar of the community.”

City Jeans, which remains family owned and operated, is the second business in the 33rd Senatorial District to be the recipient of the award.

“We want to highlight businesses in my district that are doing good work,” explained Rivera. “[They] are still committed to the community, they employ hundreds of folks, they help some local schools and they do things for the local community, and I want to make sure that they are recognized.”

For many of us, the holidays are considered the “most

wonderful time of the year.”

But, for the frail, elderly, or homebound among us, the holidays can be a disheartening reminder of one’s own isolation and stripped independence.

Care can be a question of chance.

So charged a host of advocates and elected officials who gathered to rally against what they say are the skyrocketing costs of hospital care. Members of unions 32BJ and DC37 came together with elected officials on City Hall late last week to denounce exorbitant hospital pricing that they say is endangering patient care.

“When you go into a hospital for treatment, it’s the financial equivalent of playing Russian roulette,” said Councilmember Mark Levine outside City Hall on Thurs., Dec. 12th. “You never know if you’re going to walk about with health care debt in the thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.”

Levine called for hospitals to produce

more “transparency and consistency” in pricing so patients know what they’ll be charged. “There are people in debt who are being sued by hospitals,” he said. “It’s an insane system and not defensible.”

“The hospital pricing in this city is out of control. It is irrational, it is not transparent,” argued Larry Engelstein, 32BJ’s Secretary-Treasurer. “The same procedure at one hospital can cost six times as much as another hospital chain.”

The rally was held prior to a joint City Council hearing hosted by the Committee

on Health and the Committee on Hospitals, where Councilmembers reviewed the high costs of healthcare.

At the hearing, DC37 President George Gresham questioned why hospitals are allowed to charge such exorbitant prices for medical procedures. “It has nothing to do with the quality of care. These are just for-profit decisions,” he said. “It’s time for us to start questioning, what is the rationale?”

Elisabeth Benjamin, Vice President of Health Initiatives for the social service organization Community Service Society (CSS), noted that the NYC Health + Hospitals system has stopped suing patients over unpaid medical patients.

“I’d like to see every other public hospital in New York State do the same,” she said.

“The single factor that’s had the most profound, negative impact on healthcare coverage in New York City is the cost of in- and out-patient care provided by the city’s non-profit, private hospitals,” said District Council 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido during the hearing.

“Adding insult to injury is the fact that hospital executive compensation has soared along with the cost of care,” he remarked. “In 2018, the top 10 highest paid hospital CEOs received combined salaries, perks and other compensation totaling more than $53 million. At the same time, the city and state also offer

It was the Cardinal’s turn to dazzle in crimson red this past Sat., Dec. 14th at the Kmart Astor Place.

Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan was joined by Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of New York, and more than 300 hundred volunteers of the non-profit at the store to make purchases on behalf of under-served families. The costs are covered by Catholic Charities.

The event was organized in part with St. Nicholas Project, a program that provides critical social services, including nutritious meals, job readiness training, housing assistance, immigration and refugee resettlement counseling, to families in need.

The group, adorned in bright red sweaters, filled the aisles with lists in hand to purchase needed items, including winter coats, sweaters, hats, and gloves. Each volunteer received a profile of a family to shop for, complete with wish lists and stories, and a budget.

Sullivan noted that the lists focused primarily on important items.

“The families that Catholic Charities serve throughout the year sometimes don’t have necessities to get through the winter,” he said. “We thought, ‘Isn’t Christmas the wonderful time to make sure the families we’re helping year-round have a little bit extra at Christmas?’” “So we’re buying sweaters, we’re buying coats, socks, blankets,” he added. “It’s a way for us to say the spirit of Christmas is the spirit of giving.”

One shopping cart being wheeled past was filled with winter clothes for a family of six, including a newborn. The recipients are a family from the Mercy Center in the

Bronx, which offers immigration help and adult education, among other services.

Dolan opted for a St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap to complete his festive attire as he mulled over his selections.

“First of all, [this] was unique, because I never go shopping,” he laughed. “Secondly, it was moving. You just kind of feel the unity and solidarity with people all over the world who are shopping.”

Filled Carts, Full Hearts

Dolan said everyone deserved to have a few gifts to open and share for the season.

“Some people criticize the shopping,” he said, “but ‘Whoa! Wait a minute! None of these people are shopping for themselves! They’re shopping to give, to share with other people, and that ain’t bad.’”

Put NYCHA on the naughty list – again.

Public Advocate Jumaane Williams has unveiled the annual Worst Landlord Watchlist, which puts negligent landlords in the spotlight.

At a tenants’ rally in Foley Square on Mon., Tues. 16th, Williams revealed the top offenders on the list, which is issued annually by the Public Advocate’s office.

Named as the Worst Overall Landlord a second year in a row was the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). Williams pointed out that the agency had more than 340,000 open work orders as of November.

“This is after a new [federal] monitor and a new chair,” he said.

“NYCHA is in a league of its own,” Williams stated. “They’re in the Hall of Fame of bad landlords.”

It is the first time that Williams has issued the list, which includes 100 names, since assuming the role of Public Advocate.

First implemented in 2010 by then-Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, the annual list is compiled using violation data from the Department of Buildings (DOB) and Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).

“In looking at buildings and speaking with tenants, we see the real human cost of negligence,” Williams said. “We are

highlighting the landlords because they are affecting hundreds of thousands of tenants every day.”

Jason Korn was named the worst individual landlord, with an average of 2,877 open housing violations each month. Korn operates 15 buildings with more than 700 units.

She said that NYCHA maintenance workers have not been doing daily cleaning.

“I have to speak up, because if you don’t, nothing gets done,” Potter said. “I love where I live, and it needs to become better. I’m not asking, I’m demanding, that it becomes better.”

Kim Statuto who lives at one of Abdul Khan’s properties, 1515 Selwyn Avenue, said the landlord attempted to convert the building’s boiler from oil to gas in 2016.

“We were a sitting time bomb waiting to explode,” said tenant Kim Statuto.

New York City has reached a contract agreement with

the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), which represents more than 8,500 nurses across the NYC Health + Hospitals system (H+H) and city agencies.

The agreement, announced on December 14 by Mayor Bill de Blasio, includes wage increases and provisions to address recruitment and retention issues.

“Nurses are vital to the health and well-being of our city,” said de Blasio. “With our agreement with the New York State Nurses Association, we’re paying a fair wage and addressing longstanding issues of recruitment and retention to ensure these nurses have the support they need to continue to provide excellent care to all New Yorkers.”

The agreement will provide nurses with compounded wage increases of 2 percent, 2.25 percent, 0.25 percent, and 3 percent over nearly 45 months.

It has been ratified by NYSNA membership.

“Throughout this negotiation, Mayor de Blasio and his representatives in the contract

The city has agreed to collaboratively address nurse-to-patient staffing ratios with NYSNA and establish an escalation process including non-binding mediation.

The contract includes language relating to workplace violence prevention, disaster relief leave, nurse practice councils, floating assignments, safe patient handling and posting and filling of vacancies. In addition, NYSNA will have the right to opt into the NYS Paid Family Leave Program during the term of the contract.

Jason Korn fue nombrado el peor arrendador individual, con un promedio de 2,877 violaciones de viviendas abiertas cada mes. Korn opera 15 edificios con más de 700 unidades.

New York Attorney General Letitia James, who was Williams’ predecessor as Public Advocate, recalled how landlords “would run to my office trying to fix the problems” because they didn’t want to be included on the list.

“Shame works,” remarked James. “Shame the landlords, shame the banks. Because they turned a blind eye to how the other half lives.”

“We make noise and we make change,” he said, while stressing that his hope is that landlords can improve enough to get removed from the watch list.

“I want landlords off of this list. If you’re on this list, that means that tenants are hurting,” Williams said. “When they do get off, we want to highlight them just as much so people know there’s a pathway to get off and tenants fare even better.”
