T H E A M E R I C A N WAT E R S E C T O R stands before a precipice of profound change. While big data and smart solutions drive the market in new and exciting directions, heightened public and political awareness of water quality issues and the impacts of climate change have subjected our achievements – and failures – to unprecedented scrutiny.

In water’s brave new world, the ability of stakeholders to collaborate with one another will be more important than ever. Public, private and industrial water users need to engage more closely in order to develop new approaches and partnerships that will not only address the challenges we face, but will provide shared value for all parties.

Catalyzing collaboration requires imagination and initiative at the highest levels – we intend to facilitate this at the American Water Summit by bringing together the industry’s top decision makers in a discussion which will be shaped by two key themes:

B U S I N E S S M O D E L S Closer collaboration between water users will require new ways of doing business. Whether it’s developing innovative approaches to harnessing private sector finance and expertise, or industrial users and municipalities partnering on water sourcing and wastewater reuse, how can we develop new business models which address the interests of all stakeholders? T E C H N O L O G I E S Although technological development is making great strides in the water sector, matching the needs of utilities and industrial users with the solutions that technology providers currently offer continues to remain a challenge. Will closer engagement between technology companies and end users drive the adoption of new and innovative solutions?

We hope that all attendees will act as crucial catalysts in the discussions and networking to come, and that at the end of our time here we will leave the American Water Summit with a better sense of where stronger collaboration might lead us.

Workshop OverviewBig Data, Big Cities Workshop: Empowering the Digital Utility

The World Economic Forum describes it as the fourth industrial revolution: the blurring of the lines between physical and digital systems made possible by innovations such as the internet of things and machine learning. It promises water utilities long term gains in efficiency and productivity but the reality today is very different. Few utilities are set up to handle large volumes of data in a meaningful way, and few suppliers understand their utility customers’ broader priorities and constraints. Big Data, Big Cities: Empowering the Digital Utility aims to build the road map which takes us from where we are today, to where we need to be to ensure that the water utility sector enjoys all of the benefits of the digital future.

It is a discussion in which all kinds of companies have a role in delivering success. Engineering firms advising their clients on strategy and procurement; IT giants with data management solutions; mainstream water equipment and systems suppliers facilitating data-enabled products; specialist software companies

The outlook for monitoring, control and data management systemsBig data is changing the face of the water industry, and the management of data-driven monitoring and control systems will increasingly infi ltrate every part of the water business. In the future, data-feeds and cognitive computing could govern water management and inform every decision in the municipal and industrial sectors. It is critical for every company working in the water space to understand how this reality will impact future operations and opportunities in the water industry.

This is the fi rst report of its kind that aims to provide a comprehensive insight into the market for water monitoring & control systems and give a holistic perspective of the market’s structure, the interaction of various players within the different layers of the market, and their offerings across the full breadth of the industry.

There is an increasing demand for these systems to identify when an issue has occurred, determine where in a network or treatment system a problem is, and effectively predict when a problem is likely to occur in order for preventative measures to be taken. This report shows the gaps in the market, what is motivating the end-user to invest in a solution and how the solution provider can access the market.

8:30-10:00 am Opening Plenary: Catalyzing Collaboration

Is the future of the North American water industry going to be based on the established relationships between customers and suppliers, or should we move to a new model of partnerships in order to thrive?

This is a crucial question. The prolonged drought in California, the outrage surrounding the Flint lead contamination, and the bitter politics of the election cycle have created new challenges to add to the longer term issues of aging infrastructure, reduced federal financial support and expectations of better environmental stewardship. The solutions are not the same ones that the engineering firms, technology suppliers, contract operators, bankers and contractors have been selling for years. They don’t exist yet: if they did, we wouldn’t still have these problems today.

We need new solutions and these are only going to come about by catalyzing collaboration. We need to bring the public, private and industrial water sectors closer together to form new partnerships, sharing an understanding of the objectives, developing new approaches and ultimate-ly sharing value between all partners.

1:30-3:00 pm Strand A: Business Models 1A: Cities and Industry: Getting to the Triple Win

It is potentially the biggest opportunity to create shared value in the water industry today. Matching municipal wastewater with industrial process water is a potential win. Municipalities can turn a waste stream into a value stream; industrial water users can improve their water stewardship while reducing their costs, and the solutions providers in between can find a return on facilitating the exchange. The challenge is: how do we make it happen more often?

1:30-3:00 pm Strand B: Technologies 1B: Cities and Technology: Uninvented Technologies

There is a mismatch between the problems that utilities are facing and the solutions that technology providers currently offer. In this session, Booky Oren and a group of water utility leaders explore the areas of new technology demand which are not met by currently available products and services. The discussion focuses the spotlight on where the next innovation challenges for this industry lie.

The National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) is the voice of the private water industry and the organization exclusively representing this group of quality water service providers. Founded in 1895 by a handful of small water companies, today the NAWC has members located throughout the nation, ranging in size from large companies owning, operating or partnering with hundreds of utilities in multiple states to individual utilities serving a few hundred customers.

The need for water is something all people share, yet water is often taken for granted. Its treatment and delivery is rarely top of mind in households, businesses and local governments. The NAWC is dedicated to leading the discussion on the value of water and the need for infrastructure improvement and sustainable systems. Private water companies have been providing quality service for centuries. These companies were built by men and women who engineered solutions and earned the public’s trust by treating and delivering a vital resource year after year. This commitment has endured through generations. Private water companies safeguard public health, promote environmental stewardship and deliver sustainable solutions, supporting the needs of nearly 73 million Americans every day. The Water Design-Build Council’s mission is “to advance collaborative delivery methods to transform the water industry through thought leadership and education, supported by research.”  Its ongoing work advances the development and rehabilitation of the nation’s water and wastewater infrastructure through the use of the design-build and construction-management at risk (CMAR) methods of project delivery. The collaborative aspect of these processes integrates both the design and construction phases to optimize innovation, speed, quality control, the allocation of risk and single-point accountability. These delivery methods are deemed essential for a public-private-partnership project.

Chartered in 2006, the Water Design-Build Council is a 501 C (6) non-profit corporation, established as an educational industry advocate for the value of collaborative delivery methods for water and wastewater infrastructure projects and to promote best practices in procurement and implementation through education and outreach. WDBC is comprised of member firms representing over 60% of the design-build firms (in the water sector) on the ENR top 100 list – delivering water infrastructure projects. www.waterdesignbuild.org
