WHAT IS IN MY COCKTAIL K IT AND HOW DO I USE IT?

ITEMS• COCKTAIL SHAKER: used to

mix & shake ingredients.

• JIGGER: measuring tool used to pour accurate amounts of alcohol into every drink.

• HAWTHORN STRAINER: Your tool for separating cocktails from extraneous ice and ingredient remnants as you pour from a mixing glass or shaker. It fits against the rim of the shaker like a lid.

• MUDDLER: Crushes tasty things to unlock their goodness, like mint leaves or sugar cubes.

• TWISTED BAR SPOON: Used to mix and stir, the spoon makes stirring easy. Another use is to layer shots with different ingredients, the flat paddle allows the ingredient to settle evenly.

• BOTTLE STOPPER: Used to close open bottles.

• STRAW: Suck the end of the straw to drink your delightful cocktail.

• STRAW BRUSH: Used to clean your stainless-steel straw.

• BOTTLE OPENER: Used to open bottles of wine & beer.

• STRAW/STIRRER: Suck the end of the straw to drink your delightful cocktail and use the straw to stir.

• BAR SPOON: Used as a measurement for syrupy ingredients or for mixing drinks.

BASIC TECHNIQUES

SHAKING:

When a drink contains multiple ingredients such as cream, juices or even eggs then it is vital to mix the ingredients

via shaking them together with the cocktail shaker. Not only does shaking mix the ingredients together, it also chills them at the same time. It is important to use ice cubes three-quarters of the way full, with the end goal to almost freeze the drink whilst breaking down and combining the ingredients. When you have poured in the ingredients into the cocktail shaker (item 1), hold the shaker in both hands, with one hand on top and one supporting the base, and give a quick, hard, snappy shake.

STIRRING

If your cocktail only contains spirits, then stirring is recommended. It is essential to use a mixing glass and bar spoon to stir the spirits with ice. It is important to get a good balance of stirring

so that the drink is well mixed, but not enough to dilute the drink.

MUDDLING

Muddling is one of the best ways to incorporate fresh fruits and herbs into your drinks. In most cases, the point of

muddling is not to smash the ingredients into a messy pulp. Instead, you want to gently caress

Page 10: THE COCKTAIL KIT - The Kit Comp · 2021. 3. 5. · MOJITO • 10 fresh mint leaves, plus a sprig to garnish • 3 tsp white sugar • 50ml Rum • soda to top up • lime wedges 1

the essence out of the fruits and herbs. The technique includes placing your ingredients in the bottom of a cocktail shaker or mixing glass. Gently press down and give a half-turn of the muddler. Release and continue this motion until the ingredients are sufficiently muddled. This will generally take about four to six turns.

Add the drink's other ingredients (including ice, if needed) and follow the recipe's recommendation of shaking or stirring to finish mixing the drink.

STRAINING

The Kit Company cocktail shaker comes with a built-in strainer, as well as a hawthorn strainer. When a drink calls for straining, make sure you use ice cubes as opposed to crushed ice (this is

to avoid any clogging of the strainer).

LAYERING

Layering refers to spirits layered on top of each other and can be a difficult technique. The

Kit Company cocktail making kit includes the tools necessary to make this easy for you. Layering works on the logic that each liqueur weighs differently, meaning it either floats or sinks when added to another. To pour the liqueurs into the glass, simply use the twisted bar spoon, hover it just above the previous liquid surface and pour the liquor onto the twists. Make sure that the liqueurs are poured in order of their weight, starting with the heaviest first (the one with the least alcoholic content).

BUILDING

When building a cocktail, the ingredients are poured into the glass in which the cocktail will be served. Usually, the ingredients are floated on top of each other, but

occasionally, a stirrer is put in the glass allowing the ingredients to be mixed.

FROSTING

Many cocktails are served in what is described as a frosted glass. To achieve this effect simply put the

glass into the freezer or in a bucket of ice cubes long enough to create a white frosted look on the glass.

RIM SALT

Use a wedge of fruit, lemon or lime, and wet the top edge of the glass whilst holding it upside

down. Then dip the rim of the glass into a plate of shallow salt, preferably kosher salt and turn it slowly to achieve a consistent depth of ‘frosting'.

ON THE ROCKS

This relates to a drink which requires no other technique accept serving it on its own, over some ice.
