May 2017
Each day, please pray:
“Come, Holy Spirit,
Come. Transform our lives & our Church.
In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray,
AMEN.
After Easter, I was thinking about what I would teach during the next four weeks. Pastor Cindi wants me to be strategic in my ministry and as part of that, she asked what I am going to preach in the next four weeks after I come back from my vacation.
So, I have decided to preach about the book of Jonah. The reason I chose Jonah for my next sermon series is that I also received my personal mission from the Lord this Easter. That mission is to go around the Outreach Center and communicate the love of Jesus Christ. But deep inside my heart, I found that I have the same kind of temptation Jonah had; to go against God’s will and to go with the easy way, to go the broad way rather than to go through the narrow one. It is easy to compromise with the voice of the world rather than to commit ourselves 100% to God’s command.
But the risen Jesus is working mightily on the narrow way as one of the Easter hymns says. How can we turn our heart from our natural sinful inclination? What is going to happen when we commit ourselves fully to God? The answer is simple. The world will be transformed –just what we have been praying for.
In this Jonah series, I hope we can see our own Jonah moments when we try to do disobedient things and understand how that Jonah moment can hurl us into the deep until we hit the bottom. By looking at that, my final hope through this series is that we can find the solution to follow God’s perspective even though it is different from our own. Arise & Go (featured Sat nite @ 6 PM at the Church and Sun Ignite @ 6 PM at our Outreach Center).

Several years ago I participated in a covenant group where another pastor in that district shared a book that he had just read—The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die by Dr. John Izzo (2008). I found it to be one of the most life-changing books that I have ever read.
From the time that the author was a boy, he wanted to know the secrets of living well. This propelled him to interview many people and to pinpoint the primary “things” that are the key to living life “well” and dying “happy.” The book reminded me that as we journey through life we do have the opportunity to make good choices for our lives thus The Five Secrets sermon series.
I have found that these amazing secrets fit very well with the post-Easter scripture passages, and that our response to most of these secrets is, “Of course!”

A Chance to Grow and Share What You Know
You are invited to come to the church on Thursday, May 25, 6:30 PM to check out a new Leadership Development oppor tunity. All ages and levels of experience are needed because Jesus’ model of leadership for us is one of serving. His disciples included leaders “out front” and leaders “behind the scenes.” So too, it is with us. Read a book, attend as many of six sessions as you can, take a fun personality type exercise, identify your spiritual gifts, hear special presentations on UMC church information, discuss, and fellowship (including snacks). Please indicate by May 10 to Doug Kallesen ([email protected] , 402-563-1570), or the church office, if interested and whether you can attend the May 25 kickoff meeting where you will decide.
Course facilitators: Miki Naylor, Anne Kallesen, Scott Zwick, Bob Adams, Doug Kallesen and the Pastors.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank large- hearted and loyal friends whom have made my recovery available with their food, love and kindness. God bless all of you.
Much thanks, Opal Greene
