The first church in this report ispart of the UNESCO WorldHeritage Site in Macau. It is TheRuins of St Paul’s Church, betterknown as Mater Dei. It is a churchbuilt by the Jesuits in 1580. Itactually has 3 names by which itis known:
• St Paul’s Church,• Mater Dei (inscription over the
main entry way), and• Our Lady of the Immaculate

naOur second Church, isn’ta Church at all, it is aBuddhist Temple. The A-Ma Temple originallyopened to serve Chinesefishermen and sailors asearly as 1488.
The Prayer Hall wasadded in 1605 andother additions were alsomade in 1828.
The A-Ma complex hasnot changed since then.

The Church is the only Churchin Asia and perhaps the worldthat is constructed entirely ofsteel. Belgian engineerssupervised the assembly of thechurch, the first column ofwhich was erected onSeptember 11, 1890. Thewalls were filled with mixedsand, gravel and cement.

A UNESCO World HeritageSite, the original San AugustinChurch in Manila was the firstChurch built in the region inapproximately 1572.
The present Church was builtin 1607.
On June 3, 1863, thestrongest earthquake of thetime, San Augustin Churchwas the only public buildingleft undamaged in the city.There was widespread damagethroughout the city.

The Franciscan Missionariesbuilt the first church onthe site in the early1600’s, with bamboo forthe frame and nipa asthatching.
Saint Pedro Bautista, aFranciscan missionary andmartyr, was one of thefounders of the QuiapoChurch and several otherchurches in what is nowMetro Manila and Laguna.

Construction of the first Santa Cruz Church was started in1608 by the Jesuits and it was consecrated in June 1619,as the parish to serve the increasing migrants from Chinaarriving in Manila, many of whom had decided to convertto Catholicism.
The patron saint of the Church is Our Lady of the Pillar.The Jesuits enshrined the image of the Our Lady in 1643.

Father Diego Cera de laVirgen del Carmen, anative of Spain, travelledfrom Pampanga andarrived in town on the‘second day ofChristmas’ 1795 and setabout preparing to buildwhat would become theSan José Church and thehome of the worldfamous Bamboo Organ,which he also built. The construction of what is today the ImusCathedral was started in 1823 using forcedlabor. It was built of stone and bricks. Itsfaçade was modelled after the fifth ManilaCathedral which had been designed by Fr.Juan de Uguccioni and which stood between1760 to 1852, before being destroyed inone of the many earthquakes to hit theregion.Th
